2012 Defense Discussion

Outstanding play by our defensive unit yesterday. So nice to see defenders wrapping up at contact and not just bouncing off ball carriers. Hopefully we turned a corner yesterday...

Go Bucks!
I think we turned a corner against Purdue...

Up to the Purdue game, I noticed play after play where the defender tried to strip the ball instead of tackling the ball carrier. That typically resulted in either the ball carrier giving the defender a ride for an additional 10 yards or a missed tackle all together. I haven't seen the strip attempts the last 2 games and the tackling is exponentially better. Coincidence? I think not.

My question is whether it was the players that took it upon themselves or whether it was a coaching strategy to emphasize stripping the ball? Either way, I'm glad that it has been changed. Kudos for making the adjustment. Assuming we can stay / get healthy, I see good things coming from the defensive side of the ball the rest of the season.

I believe the emphasis on manufacturing fumbles was installed by Heacock and Fickell after 2007 when OSU had a really bad year in TO margin. They put work into it that off season and wound up being in the Top 10 in the nation in TO margin the following season. Kurt Coleman was exceptional at ripping the football out. The current 2012 Buckeyes ... not so much.

Urban said in his presser after the MSU game that he was going to make sure raking at the football stopped, and if it didn't guys who continued to do it wouldn't play. His view is that the best way for the defense to force turnovers is to stick their helmets on the football.

i REALLY liked the game plan last night. there was a lot more blitzing and a lot more man coverage.
yes, we dodged a couple bullets. but perhaps those bullets were dodged because of pressure on the QB. they were in McMoxie's face all night long.

I bet no one has been harder on the defense than me on this board but I must say I liked what we have done the last 2 weeks.

Gave up two special team TD's the last two weeks and really gave PSU nothing until we had the game well in hand.

I think the coaching staff is finally rotating more guys on the DL to keep the guys fresh and I really like the way we're bringing the LB's on blitz's. Boren has been great, as has Nate Williams in filling in at LB.

The DB's just need to continue to work on getting there head around to avoid the big PI penalties and also need some work on scramble drill because they lost their responsibilities a few times when things broke down. Otherwise a good game.

I thought the guys played great last night. They shut the run down and did a great job of maintaining the big TEs that PSU has. No doubt this defense is much better suited to play a more pro / power style offense. When we get the young LBs ready for action, and can handle the spread better, the defense will be scary good.

I mean, look what it did for the French in WWI -- sorry, I couldn't resist.

I have no clue as to why this defense isn't living up to the preseason hype.

The French did ok in WWI - of course their performance or more accurately their casualities sustained in World War 1 was why Petain felt the need to surrender and then collaborate in World War 2....
