Someone on BSB (Scout $) pointed out that a ton of B1G teams were ranked in the top-25 in defense last year, which raises the question if they were all dominant or if the offenses were that bad.

Cousins was good (but was paired with a lousy running game despite the backs), Denard was streaky, Russell Wilson didn't play Michigan. After those three the QB play gets really spotty.
To me I'd say it's not even a debate, it had much more to do with the offenses being that bad.

Jordan Kovacs is a destitute man's Donnie Nickey.

Sure--if by "destitute," you mean that he has about as much business being mentioned in the same breath with Donnie Nickey as I do. Look at it this way--Nickey was in the NFL for a long time. The NFL wouldn't give someone as slow as Jovacs so much as a sniff.

Fiutak's preview for Michigan is up:

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1188139.html

Here's an excerpt that is a bit of a head scratcher:

What to watch for on defense: A fantastic back seven. There doesn?t seem to be too much concern from the coaching staff about the rebuilt line that loses some key parts, but it?s still asking a lot to be as good as last season?s veteran front four was. Fortunately, the back seven has the potential to be outstanding with Kenny Demens leading a good group of linebackers that started to come into their own down the final stretch of the season. The secondary is loaded at corner and excellent at safety, but all the experience has to translate into more big plays and more picks.

Outside of experience, that seems a bit of an overstatement on their back sevens' talent level.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Obviously scUm has to be about the greatest team on the planet if they should happen to beat Bama. Otherwise Bama might fall out of the top 7. Which could really screw up Arkansas being somewhere in the top 15 two weeks later...Which could really mess up tAm two weeks after that...Like I said the SEC schedules much better than the BIG when it comes to Impotant Games. Correct any spelling if you must.

By destitute i mean poor, very very poor. Nickey was in the right situations for his abilities with OSU and Tenn for a long time, like Kovacs fell into the right scUM at the right time: it's pretty amazing the starts a schmoe like him has racked up in a B1G career.

Michigan currently has a great class and not getting one player is not going to ruin any program. Ty would have been nice, but I am not going to lose any sleep over one player. The last time I got all bent out over Michigan not getting one player it as TP, who I thought was a talent Michigan had to have. The kid was talented, nobody can argue that point.

I have since learned no one player is bigger than any program, if kid does not want to come to Michigan, Ohio st or any other school, so be it. I want players who want to play at Michigan.

I find all the Hoke bashing funny, he is recurting better than last two coaches by miles. He will have a top ten class again this year.

What will be fun to watch is Meyer recruiting spread players vs Hoke wanting Pro Style players.

Michigan is on their way to a second strong class but is severely lacking at the WR position thus far. I don't think Treadwell fixes that by himself either.

DeVeon Smith certainly lessens the blow at RB but I think Isaac would have helped them out in the passing & return departments long before running back.

Hoke's "pro style" players will be going against Meyers "pro style" defensive players. To me, that's far more interesting.

I was saying that very thing as far back as the beginning of the conference schedule last season. I believe my remarks were along the lines of, "Calling Russell Wilson the best QB in the Big Ten is damning him with faint praise."

Cousins was decent, but was also a bit of a game manager who was prone to some "Sparty moments". Robinson is a scatback playing QB and most of his best throwing plays came because he is apparently a walking talisman. Braxton Miller was very much a true freshman. McGloin had "moxie". Taylor [strike]Forcier[/strike] Martinez was capable of good moments of improv, but was capable of being as bad as any QB in the league at any point as well. Persa might have actually been the best QB in the league, but he was constantly injured. I can't even be bothered to remember the rest.

Given the state of QB play in the league last year, I don't think any of the B1G's pass defenses can be judged accurately at the moment.

One BIG team in the top 30! Wiscy. Yet, MSU and OSU matched them.
And we know how putrid our offense was last year! We ended up at #107!!!!!!!!!

The same Wisconsin that torched Nebraska and went blow for blow with Oregon ends up #14 while Oregon is #4. Interesting. I would have expected Bielema to run it up at least as much as Chip, but clearly that's not the case. Or was it not for lack of trying?
