2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

Urban's NC teams ranked in the top 6 in scoring defense. Running a spread offense does not prevent you playing stout defense.

As for the tempo, that remains to be seen; but I'm not convinced. Both teams will get more possessions, which may hurt your defensive stats, but does it really hurt your defense? I'll withhold judgement for now

Yep. With the depth on the defense, we'll be able to rotate players out fairly well by the end of the season as the seconds stringers get more and more experience...

Shazier and perry, because well be in the nickel most of the time. Few teams on our schedule do we need to really worry about their running game. Not saying grant won't play, but he'll be more of a backup, IMO.

After Monday's scrimmage, Shazier said he thought Grant would be on the field during nickel. FWIW

Using my leap-of-faith logic, that now great O-line will be practicing against the brand-new D-line, and ergo, after a year of that practice, the D-line will become very good, as well. And next year, replacing four starters on the O-line, the now fantastic D-line (assuming no one goes pro) will break in the O-line and get them ready.

Logically you're right....except the fantastic O-line has already talked about some members of the D-line being unblockable. So maybe we don't need to wait a year

So if Grant will now be in the nickle defense, does that mean Josh Perry isn't doing as well as expected?
It sounds as if his stock may be dropping. Perhaps his size , being bigger than a typical LB is causing him to not be as effective in his position. Has anyone heard anything that may shed some light here?

Do you mean Josh Perry?

And I think the rumor was that Josh was going to be starting over Grant, but in reality Grant was out with an injury. So it seems moreso that things are as expected, with Perry coming in the base package.

Ahhh.. the old glass half empty/glass half full conundrum.

This Defense is loaded with talent and we have increased our speed. Not very good news for the rest of the B1G. Coach Fickel seems to be confident in our LB corp and so we should be also. Just wrap up when tackling and this could be a dominant D.

I feel an up-tempo early game offense might hurt overall defensive yardage allowed - but an offense that can put you up 2-3 scores and force the opposition to become one dimensional opens tons of opportunities for turnovers.

For sure, getting a lead and forcing the opponent to pass, allowing tOSU to be in the nickel or dime, minimizes the line backer problem.

Meyer: I'm Excited, Confident About Defense

There is one issue on the 2013 Ohio State Buckeyes. Head coach Urban Meyer has not been shy in revealing that it’s the linebacker corps. On Tuesday, he reiterated that the jury is still out on the defense, but he’s excited and confident in the unit.
For a 10-year stretch in the 2000s, the Buckeyes featured one of the top defensive units on an annual basis. Meyer said it’s time for that level of play to return, after a two-year absence.
“I want an aggressive defense, not a bend but don’t break unit,” Meyer said.
One change this season will be team speed on that side of the ball. The defense will be in dime coverage a majority of the time, a favorite formation of Everett Withers. It will allow Ohio State to play more man-to-man, plus it creates better matchups against spread offenses.

Cont'd ...

The article by stow fan today says Urban is worried about the quality and depth at linebacker. I am guessing he is leaving Shazier out of that though.

I just wanted to get one thing off my chest that I feel our defense is unfairly being accused of after one game. I keep seeing people harp on our defensive line for the lack of pressure but while the sack numbers weren't there I feel differently. I thought Bosa and Spence were there putting heat on most of the game and Shazier/Grant also had some pressures as well.

I feel Washington needs to step up but other than that I felt the line got good pressure but smart play by their qb took a potential 4-6 sacks away from our defense.

Infact I was happy with our performance overall as well. They gave up one true td drive and held them to 250 yards of offense with no big plays while missing 3 of our starters (counting shazier) on a already young defense.

Offense just needs to play smart with no turnovers this year and I feel this defense will be something very special by years end, maybe sooner.
