COLUMBUS, Ohio – Paced by a two-home run day from Josh Dezse, the Ohio State baseball team earned a 9-4 series-opening win over Iowa Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 26-20, 7-9 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes fall to 25-16, 7-9 in conference play.

“This has been a tough week but it’s allowed the guys to put baseball in perspective,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “They’re allowed to just go out and play baseball and realize how fortunate they are to be playing this game. Although we’re in a big part of our season, these young men are learning an incredible lesson right now that will benefit them for a long time on the baseball field and off.”

After the Buckeyes were unable to do anything with a single and a pair of walks in the bottom of the first, Ohio State got on the board off Iowa starter Andrew Hedrick in the bottom of the second. Ronnie Dawson led off the inning with a single through the right side before Zach Ratcliff followed with a home run down the right field line, his second of the season, to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. With one down, Tim Wetzel walked and moved to second on a groundout by Nick Sergakis before Connor Sabanosh followed with a single through the right side to score Wetzel for the 3-0 Buckeye lead after two innings of play.

Ohio State added to its lead off Hedrick in the bottom of the third. With one down, Pat Porter was hit by a pitch before Dezse drilled a two-run home run to right-center to put the Buckeyes up 5-0 after three innings of play.

COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Ohio State fell to Iowa, 17-2, Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 26-21, 7-10 in Big Ten play, while the Hawkeyes move to 26-16, 8-9 in conference play.

“We just imploded today,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “We had bad tempo. The flow and pace of the game were not good. We didn’t pitch the ball well which sometimes facilitates bad defense and we weren’t really solid offensively either. However, we came into yesterday trying to win the series and that’s what we’ll try to do tomorrow night.”

Iowa took the early lead in the top of the first off Ohio State starter Ryan Riga. Eric Toole reached on a bunt single to lead off the game before stealing second and moving to third with one down after a groundout by Jake Mangler. Riga then retired Tyler Peyton on a comebacker to the mound for the second out of the inning but Jake Yacinich followed with an RBI single back up the middle and, after balk moved him to second, scored on a double off the right-field wall by Dan Potempa to give Iowa the 2-0 lead.

Ohio State answered with a run off Iowa starter Sasha Kuebel in the bottom of the inning. Nick Sergakis reached on a leadoff single through the left side before an error on a failed pickoff throw moved him to third with nobody out. Kuebel struck out Connor Sabanosh for the first out of the inning but Troy Kuhn followed with an RBI groundout to third to score Sergakis to cut the lead to 2-1.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team topped Iowa, 3-2, in the rubber game of a three-game series Monday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes won their fourth-consecutive series, improving to 27-21 on the year, 8-10 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes fall to 26-17, 8-10 in conference play.

“We need to continue to be consistent with our tempo,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “The tempo, attitude and mentality of the team were good today. We came to the ballpark with an attitude that we weren’t going to lose and that carried us through the game.”

Ohio State threatened against Iowa starter Tyler Peyton in the bottom of the first. Nick Sergakis led off the inning with a single and, after Peyton retired Ronnie Dawson and Troy Kuhn, walks to Pat Porter and Josh Dezse loaded the bases with two down. However, Troy Montgomery followed with a line drive down the third-base line that was snagged on a diving grab by Iowa third baseman Nick Day to keep the game scoreless after an inning.

The Buckeyes rallied again in the bottom of the second. Aaron Gretz reached on a leadoff walk before Craig Nennig singled and Tim Wetzel sacrificed both runners up a base. Sergakis followed with a loud out on a liner to Day at third before Dawson grounded out to end the second.

Ohio State was able to break through in the bottom of the third. After Peyton retired Kuhn to lead off the third, the right-hander allowed a double to Porter before he hit Dezse and Iowa went to left-hander Jared Mandel out of the bullpen. Mandel got Montgomery to pop up a sacrifice bunt attempt for the second out of the inning but Aaron Gretz followed with a single up the middle to plate Porter before a double to right-center be Nennig scored Dezse for the 2-0 Buckeye lead.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Miami Tuesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 27-22 while the RedHawks improve to 23-25.

After Travis Lakins tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in his first career start, the RedHawks got on the board against Michael Horejsei in the top of the third. John Crummy led off the inning with a single before advancing to second on an error by Buckeye centerfielder Troy Montgomery. After a fielder’s choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Steve Sada put RedHawks on the corners with nobody out, a safety squeeze by Ryan Elble plated Crummy to give Miami the 1-0 lead.

Miami doubled its lead in the top of the fourth when Chad Sedio reached on a leadoff infield single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Honchel and scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Slappey to make it a 2-0 game.

The Buckeyes then rallied against Miami starter Charlie Suich in the bottom of the inning. Nick Sergakis led off the inning with a single and, after a foul out by Ronnie Dawson, Troy Kuhn doubled to right-center to put Buckeyes on second and third with one down. However, Suich bounced back to strike out Pat Porter looking before getting Josh Dezse to line out to left to preserve the 2-0 advantage.

Things stayed quiet until the RedHawks added another in the top of the sixth. After retiring the first batter of the inning, Horejsei gave up back-to-back singles by Gary Russo and Sedio before striking out Honchel for the second out of the inning. Ohio State then went to Tyler Giannonatti out of the bullpen before Slappey grounded a single back up the middle to score Russo to push the Miami lead to 3-0.

With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 28-22 on the season, 9-10 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines fall to 24-26-1, 11-11 in conference play.

"It's always good to get a Friday night win but we still have work to do," Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. "Tully was a man tonight. That was the story of the game. It is one thing to pitch on Friday night but it's another thing to pitch on Friday night at Michigan in this rivalry game. He arrived tonight."

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 4-1, in its rubber game at Michigan Sunday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 28-24, 9-12 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines move to 26-26-1, 13-11 in conference play.

Michigan jumped out to the early lead off Ohio State starter Greg Greve in the bottom of the second. Cole Martin and Kyle Jusick notched back-to-back singles to lead off the inning but Greve rolled a 6-3 double play by Kevin White as it appeared the Buckeye right-hander might get out of the inning unscathed. However, Dominic Jamett followed with a bloop single to center to score Martin for the Wolverine lead. Eric Jacobson then singled before a Nick Sergakis error loaded the bases and a wild pitch plated Jamett as Michigan took a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

The Wolverines added to their lead with another run in the bottom of the third. After Greve retired the first two batters of the inning, Martin singled through the left side before Jusick drove him home with a double down the right-field line to push the lead to 3-0.

Michigan tacked on one more in the bottom of the fourth. With one down, Travis Maezes doubled down the right-field line, moved to third on a single by Jacob Cronenworth and scored on a squeeze bunt by Jackson Glines to make it a 4-0 Michigan lead.

Ohio St. ballplayers tested to become donor for teammate with cancer
Ohio State freshman lefty Zach Farmer was not long ago diagnosed with leukemia, and he's now undergoing treatment.

Not long after the bad news came down, reports the Columbus Dispatch, Farmer's Buckeye teammates all underwent tests to determine whether any of them would be a compatible bone marrow donor for Zach. Here's more from the Dispatch's Mark Znidar ...

Senior captain Tim Wetzel, who has been a potential donor on the national bone-marrow transplant list for 18 months, told coach Greg Beals it would be a good idea to recruit the team. Farmer has had his first round of chemotherapy at The Ohio State James Cancer Hospital. He'll be eligible for a bone-marrow transplant if he goes into remission.

Thirty-seven team members, including Beals, signed consent forms, filled out a short personal history and swabbed their cheeks with four Q-Tips from a DNA testing kit to see whether they are a match for Farmer or anyone else in the nation.

Here's where you can join the national bone-marrow registry and help patients like Zach Farmer.

Putting the unfortunate circumstances befalling Zach aside for a minute, he's in our prayers, can anyone enlighten me on Coach Greg Beals? Is he starting to feel the heat from Gene Smith? Baseball doesn't seem to be 'taking off' like the wrestling team has done, seems to have regressed to where it was before Bob Todd took over. Certainly has not exceeded where Todd got tOSU baseball program? If there is a discussion somewhere else, please advise, as would hope that he knows that mediocre isn't acceptable. Best wishes to Zach, and hats off to the other members of the team for going to bat for their teammate. Go Bucks

id say its a lil early to be putting Coach Beals' feet to the flames just yet. Recruiting in my opinion has improved each year and the scheduling difference is night and day. maybe there was more work to be done than previously thought?

Thanks Brody, read that the last few under Todd were not great, so probably the cupboard was a bit more bare than thought? Next year will be Beal's fourth, so will have all of his recruits in uniform. Hate seeing B10 coming in and taking two of three, and REALLY hate the mid-week game losses.
