2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I have been rather amazed at how Coach Matta has continued despite the health challenges that he has faced. He includes in his coaching tree some of the top coaches in America and I think that Ohio State has been flattered to have him. It's also clear that Ohio State basketball has been regressing for several years now.

This was supposed to be a great team - a team to get excited about. So far, it's not. And, it's not, against terrible competition. If this continues, then I think the future strategy concerning the Ohio State coach is rather clear.

But, I would not sell Coach Matta down the river just yet.

I wouldn't say that this was supposed to be a great team. But I think the expectations were to make the NCAA tournament.

Fair comment. After reading the report of Coach Matta's comments, I thought a 20-win season was likely. Pomeroy also had them ranked in the low teens. I think that the expectations now are for an offense ranked outside the top 100, a 15-win or 16-win season, 8th or 9th in the B1G, and a return to the NIT. If that scenario is met, then I think the likely outcome is obvious.

I dont want to sound like Im bashing but Lyle and Loving need to sit. If the young guys will bring more energy and fire, they need to play and develop their skills under fire. This team isnt going to compete for a championship this year, especially at this rate, so play all of the youngsters and force the issue with serious tempo and energy. Lyle and Loving are not temp kind of players and they are flat terrible on defense. See if the benching lights a fire under them or at least it will give other guys an opportunity to showcase. Put Kam as the two next to Jackson and run people to death.

Unfortunately, our starters aren't playing good enough for us to get twenty minutes each from the first ten. We almost need to shorten up our roster for these next two games just to get something going. Lyle did much better against Providence, so I am hoping he can handle the job and limit our use of CJ to 15 or so going forward. I'm more interested in seeing Potter, Thompson, and Bell grow rather than Loving get minutes, but I doubt Thad throws his senior under the bus just yet.

Got home around midnight, but glad to see a better performance vs the Friars. Ticky-tack fouls early on Potter pretty much took him out of the game but Providence still struggled to defend the paint - they seem to miss Bentil more than they miss Dunn. Anyone have word on KBD? I didn't like the way his leg bent when he went down in the 2nd half.

Matta said last night that it's just a sprained ankle and he'll be day to day.
