2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

This is going to be really ugly for coaches first year... we really need to hit a home run with at least one recruit to rebound
if ayala reclassed to '17 and committed to osu, i would call that a "home run" considering it's so late. heck, a class consisting of ayala, young, and wesson would be very good regardless of the situation.

excepting ayala, i don't think holt needs a home run commitment, per se, in the '17 class. and i'm sure as heck not expecting one right now. for me, a home run would be a group of good players for each position/role. a class of cohill, goodwin, watson, hunter, and ??? would have no players ranked in 247's top 60 (all are between #66 and #123), but i'd consider that a solid triple if not a home run. provided a good post commitment, i'd be stoked with that class.

Cohill talks a lot but is hard to read. right now I feel like OSU is one of many for him. i love Watson's game and I think we have an outside shot but the issue with him is he's a self-professed mama's boy and has said that he'd prefer not to go far from home. there are several schools on his list that are much closer to home. we're making up ground on Hunter but right now he has the best relationships with UM and Xavier. the longer Goodwin waits to recommit the more I wonder if he really is looking hard for other good options. no idea what good post player we could get, there aren't many in the T100 and the staff didn't really have a recruiting relationship with any of them other than Bingham.

if you asked me who I felt good about right now, I'd say Ayala IF he reclasses, maybe Goodwin, and maaaaaaaybe Hunter. that's it. i am curious, though, to see if we can get Luther Muhammad on a visit. I'd feel like if we could get that to happen soon, we might have a shot with him.

Yeah, usually the first year with a new coach it is ugly. However, I don't think anyone expects Ohio State to have a winning record this year.

YEAR ONE OF THE CHRIS HOLTMANN ERA WILL BE PAINFUL BUT CONSISTENT WITH PRECEDENT

Chris Holtmann replaced Thad Matta as Ohio State's head coach exactly 23 days ago.

In that window, he's officially brought on his former Butler assistant coaches, welcomed former Butler signee and Ohio hooper Kyle Young, retained David Egelhoff as director of basketball operations, announced Dave Richardson will vacate the strength and conditioning role, first suspended then booted redshirt freshman swingman Derek Funderburk, and announced incoming freshman Braxton Beverly will not be a Buckeye.

In addition, he and the staff have been evaluating players and making offers right and left.

With all that activity, he now sports a roster with nine scholarship players, one of which belongs to a former walk-on.

The moral of those last three paragraphs? Get ready for some spectacular turbulence this season. Embrace it as part of the rebuilding process. It's unavoidable after Gene Smith unfortunately, but finally, saved Thad Matta from himself.

I am expecting progress from Potter, Andre Wesson, and CJ Jackson.

I am expecting plateau from Kam, Tate, KBD.

I am expecting a mixed bag from Young and Kaleb Wesson.

I expect some non-descript minutes from Lane.

I still think this time has the offensive tools to make things interesting with some of the better teams, but lacks the depth or makeup to defend very well for 40 minutes.

Well, I was very enthusiastic last year about the team, because the timing was right for everything to come together and return to what the program could be. As we saw against UVA and UCLA, they were close last year, but Matta really had nothing left to give, and they frittered the year away. Matta was finished. I know very little about what our team will look like under Holtmann (Tate suggested Coach Holtmann was reminiscent of Matta in a lot of ways), but the talent is still there to have a winning season and make the NCAA this year. I would be impressed if he guided them to a winning record, but if the chips fall right, I don't see why that is unreasonable. The players that he has are all worthy of Ohio State...if Young, Wesson and Jallow provide solid minutes off the bat, the starters are good enough to compete. The question really comes down to inside, and what is Potter going to look like.

I honestly feel like the coaching change couldn't have come at a better time for Potter, he has all the tools to be a very versatile big, he's still young enough to be developed and I also am of the belief that CH will let the players play the game that they are comfortable with if it's yielding positive results within his structure, whereas I believe that Thad would recruit players and make them adjust to what he needed them to do with the exception of guards which is the only position I can recall Thad giving that kind of freedom besides a catch and shoot green light to an extent.
With that said I believe if Potter has the potential that I think he does the old staff would not have gotten it out of him but this new staff can.

I think theyll end up with at least a winning record. I mean last year was a trainwreck by all means and they ended up 17-15, I dont think its out of realm of possibiity that this team wins a few more. Theres a decent enough core here to win a few they probably wont be expected to win. I dont think we will see a Florida Atlantic or Texas Arlington type meltdown this year either. Not expecting the big dance but I feel they will at least not make us want to launch our remotes across the room all season.

Pretty optimistic they are back in the dance in 18/19 with the core that should be back and whoever is added in rrecruiting or grad transfer.
