2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

C'mon now, counting Kam and Joey Lane, we have exactly ten roster-spots filled! Official site has us as

G's: CJ Jackson, Kameron Williams, Joey Lane, Braxton Beverly

F's: Jae'Sean Tate, Derek Funderburk, Andre Wesson, Keita Bates-Diop

F-C's: Micah Potter, Kaleb Wesson

No offense to our guys, but that's the weakest looking roster of guards I've ever seen at tOSU. None of them should be starting in the B1G next year.
Be lucky to win 3 B1G games next year. They will be totally unwatchable.

That is, quite simply, a team with no strengths.

Do not forget the 3*recruit from Indiana who we have asked for his transcripts. I am sure that if he would get an offer he would jump at that:wink: We should know about Williams on May 24 if not before.

Not just Kam, but what are Tate and Bates-Diop thinking? They have been through a lot and next year is their last chance. At the end of this season there was still an opportunity to make next year a statement year. Now? How do you motivate this team? What single positive thing has happened for this team in over a year?

Bates-Diop has 2 years left. Most players aren't going to transfer once they are JR or SR because of the sitting out a year.

If Matta doesn't make it to 2018-19 I would assume Bates-Diop will go pro or grad transfer if a new coach is brought in.

I think Tate would have grad transferred as well but couldn't get it done before the fall.

I won't lie... I haven't found OSU basketball that watchable since lighty/Diebler/Craft were in uniform.

Even with Russell we just weren't very well rounded and lacked a ton. This has been in the works now for 3-5 years in my eyes.
They haven't been a good "team" since 2012-13. Even the '14-15 team was just Russell and a bunch of misfit toys. The downfall began with the terrible Amir Williams class, and it's been a free fall from there. The 2015 class was all-time bad and was a dagger right to the heart of the program. It, literally, has destroyed them. It will bottom out this year when I honestly think they'll struggle to win 10 games total. That's late Ayers-era bad. The next coach is going to have a total overhaul on his hands, and I'm not just talking about the players. The culture around the program has declined so precipitously, that they have the look/attitude of a perennial B1G bottom feeder. You could see that clearly in the season ending loss to Rutgers (RUTGERS!).

I just hope old Geno has it in him to get a good young coach in here or else the next decade of tOSU basketball is going to be very, very bleak.

Rob Oller commentary: JaQuan Lyle’s departure can only be seen as negative to Ohio State men’s basketball

AR-170519139.jpg

The optimist in me sees JaQuan Lyle’s recent departure from the Ohio State men’s basketball program as a positive for the Buckeyes. The pessimist sees the junior-to-be guard’s exit as a negative.

The pessimist is leading Mr. Sunshine by six lengths at the quarter pole.

Lyle was the final remaining member of a five-player recruiting class that was ranked No. 5 nationally. The other four players left by the end of their freshman seasons. Lyle also is the third player to leave the program this offseason, adding fuel to what increasingly can be viewed as a dumpster fire of a program. Redshirt junior Trevor Thompson declared for the NBA draft and signed with an agent. Backup center David Bell transferred to Jacksonville to be closer to his pregnant girlfriend.

Shooting guard Kam Williams also could soon bid adieu to Ohio State. The fifth-year senior has declared for the draft but has not hired an agent, meaning he has until May 24 to withdraw his name from the draft. If Williams leaves, the Buckeyes will be left with only two scholarship guards on the roster: C.J. Jackson and incoming freshman Braxton Beverly.

That is a bad look, no matter how Ohio State spins it. Players transfer all the time. Players often leave for personal reasons. But the sheer volume of departures from the OSU program the past two seasons is alarming, and not only because it makes one wonder what is going on inside the program. The Buckeyes need bodies, preferably ones capable of knocking down outside shots. Lyle averaged 11.4 points per game last season and shot a team-best 40.7 percent from three-point range. If Williams leaves ... gulp.

Is it too late to back out of this?

Imagine this team going up against a Duke or UNC type in November.

I am a former season ticket holder for over 30 years. I wouldn't go to a game this year for 10 grams of coke and a case of Pepsi.

I honestly believe you may need something stronger than cocaine. We're talking Heisenberg-level meth or whatever Bobcat Goldthwait was snorting in the movie "Blow".

The team cannot even scrimmage 5-on-5 right now with scholarship players (unless walk-ons get scholarships).
