Game Thread 2017 B1G Championship Game: OSU vs. Wisconsin - 12/2/17 @ 8:00 ET (FOX)

Hornibrook is meh, but much more likely to hit those open TEs than Korn on da Kob was. They've got to make him make the throws instead of giving them to him, he is likely to throw picks when constantly tested. Cover someone basically.
we have no idea what we're doing when we play zone coverage... this team has zero advantage over us athletically so rely on our speed and play man coverage all game.

You double that tight end until they prove they can throw it to someone else IMO. Stack the box, double the tight end, and bring it.

Exactly. Our CBs should have no trouble covering the Wisconsin WRs 1 on 1. No reason to not double the TE and make them prove they can complete passes outside to the receivers.

IMO, make them do something they aren't equipped to do... Doesn't seem too difficult to me but I have a feeling it will look difficult lol

Woah I didn't realize how good Wisconsin has been on defense all year.. It seems you can really limit their offense but that defense they have is going to be a challenge.

If we come out and blow the doors off this Wisconsin team I'll be very surprised.

Well part of that is Wisconsin's hasn't played a good offense all year. I think Northwestern is the highest ranked offense they've played so far at 59th. Wisconsin's defense in 2014 was ranked 2nd if I remember correctly before we blew the doors off them. Finished the season 4th.

In this scenario, how many defenders does OSU keep "stacked" in the box to defend the run, and who's going to double-cover the route-running tight end?
IMO it's two fold... the tight end is normally lined at the LOS anyways.

So put Baker/Worely on the tight end with Webb over top. If they read run Webb crashes and if the tight end releases and goes out he knows to double.

They should be able to have 8-9 in the box no issue while having two responsible for the tight end should he release.

We've yet to see this OSU defense make a team fight left handed all year... Take away what they do best first which is the run and do what you can to take away their 2nd best option which is their tight end.

Make their QB throw at Ward, Sheffield and Arnette which is a big advantage to our DB's (Sheffield and Arnett have been very good since the OU game btw)

That seems like it would have the potential to leave a lot of unattended gaps on the weak side.

I think that this game is going to present Ohio State with a tough challenge, perhaps second only to Oklahoma this year, because the Wisky defense is good (even given the competition that they have faced).

  • In the NCAA FBS, they are ranked:
    • #1 in rushing defense
    • #1 in passing efficiency defense
    • #2 in passing defense
    • #2 in scoring defense
    • #2 in time of possession, controlling the ball on average for 35 minutes a game.
    • #5 in red zone defense.
    • #8 in team sacks
An Iowa or TSUN first quarter against the Wisky defense could be too much to overcome. Buckeyes need to start strong and have their best game just a week after The Game.

Coach 'em up!

ONCE AGAIN, OHIO STATE IS TRYING TO AVOID A MAJOR LETDOWN AFTER AN EMOTIONAL VICTORY

"Yeah, that's a concern," Meyer said when asked about avoiding a letdown. "Every team's different. You can't just say this is the way we've done it in the past because every team is different. This happens to be somewhat a mature team. And the term around here is laser focus. And they've been good. And I put a lot of reliance on my older guys, because they've earned that right."
.
.
.
"This has been a stretch. That's one of the great things, when I was at Florida, we always played Florida State before the SEC championship game," Meyer said. "I guess that was good for fans and everybody, but it was tough on players. And we play our rival, you can't say we saved a little bit of energy for this next one. But also, our guys are energized, ready to go for this one."

Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who was a redshirting freshman when the Buckeyes last played in the Big Ten title game, confirmed his coach's remarks on the teleconference.

"You can't ignore that it's been a long season, but we're at the good part now," McLaurin said. "We have a chance to win a championship and that is why you come here. After an up-and-down season, we just got back to basics, focusing on the little things that make us a good football team and I feel we are going to be very prepared for this game. We have a lot of momentum going right now."

major letdown? We're playing an undefeated, top 4 ranked team, for the big ten title. How much more motivation do you need?

This isn't Iowa in Kinnick at 2:30 for fucks sake...

Yeah, the fact that our DB's can play Man at a high level should give us the ability to do exactly what you are saying. But stopping the run is the key to everything. Take the run game away and they are toast.

To me it's all about playing the percentages... Are they more likely to beat you throwing the ball or running the ball? We know that answer is running the ball so take it away 100% at all costs.

It's highly unlikely Hornibrook is going to go for 300 yards passing with 3TD's and 0 INTs. I mean it could happen but it's very unlikely so you bet that he can't do just that IMO.

Stack the box, shut down the freshman, and force Hornibrook to press. When Alex presses he tends to throw interceptions and that will just make them press even more (leading to most likely more turnovers). I can't stand when we act like a offense is dangerous at both facets (running and passing) and insist on playing to stop both. To me I'd rather take away what they do very well 100% instead of taking away everything semi effectively. I know you leave yourself open that way to big plays but when you out man basically every team (this one included) you should be able to do that.

screen shot of the Okorn overthrow from another thread

View attachment 17033

What in the actual fuck are they doing here besides baring their throat, handing the enemy a knife and begging to be slaughtered?

This is how Iowa destroyed the OSU defense and I guarantee you Chryst is too good of a coach to let his functional game manager QB miss as many of these simple back breakers as Okorn did.

Remember how Fickell could drop a zone blitz on an offense to take away what they wanted to keep going back to? I miss that.

Luke could teach a zone defense, and had impeccable timing on zone blitzes. Luke's hit rate was really pretty ridiculous when you think about it. Steve Miller's INT vs Alabama, the Solomon Thomas INT vs Arkansas, Cam Heyward's INT vs Miami? The exact same defensive call directly contributed to a game winning play in three different big games -- and that's just the ones I remember off the top of my head as I sit here typing.

I could be mistaken, but I think that playbook took a two hour drive down I-71.

I think if Hornibrook doesn’t throw a pick in this game, it will be because the secondary didn’t catch the ball. He continues to make dangerous decisions time after time, even knowing how often he turns it over.

Their game against the Gophers last Saturday gave him a bit of a confidence boost, to boot. I’m hoping that leads to him slinging it around a bit this weekend. The D has to be ready to reel them in by getting their heads turned around.
