2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

Giving up over 400 passing yards to Indiana is not a good start.

Rushing att: OSU - 51 @ 5.7ypr
IND -27 @ 0.8ypr (Sure we'll include sacks)

This front gets it done against the run and will make you one dimensional. Sure, giving up yards is one thing facing modern air raid offenses.

Your money is made in the redzone anymore by holding to FG attempts or just flat out getting take-aways. Oh, I might add, Turnovers - IND 3 OSU 0.

Those are the two categories you have to win in against these type of offenses. Do that and good chance you win the game.

Ten Things We Learned from Ohio State’s 49-21 Win at Indiana

Here's #3 and #10:

3. The defensive tackles can penetrate.

There has been so much talk about how good the Ohio State defensive ends are that sometimes the Buckeye defensive tackles get overlooked. Tracy Sprinkle, Dre’Mont Jones, and Jashon Cornell all had tackles in the backfield in this game, and they were a large reason why the Hoosiers didn’t have any rushing yards until late in the game. We knew Jones would be active, but it was great to see Sprinkle back out there and making trouble. You could tell he was having a good time. It was also good to see Cornell getting involved early on. His sack and forced fumble was a bright spot on the night. It’s probably not a coincidence that all three of these guys came to Ohio State as defensive ends who grew into defensive tackles. Of course, no defensive tackle penetrated into the backfield more than Robert Landers, who went about 30 yards into the backfield on his fumble return. All in all, the defensive tackles were a bright spot. We’ll have to see if they can hold up against an offense that actually runs the ball, however.

10. This defense is deep.

I think freshman defensive end Chase Young was in the game in the second quarter, and I’m assuming Jonathon Cooper was in there early as well. Indiana could have run their offense even faster than they were and the Ohio State defensive ends weren’t going to get tired because they have a thousand of them. Then at another point when the game was still in doubt, I saw sophomore linebacker Malik Harrison in the game for Dante Booker just because. There were four defensive tackles mixing in early, two strong safeties, and three cornerbacks. You know those videos of dogs having a great time drinking out of a blasting hose? That’s this defense against up-tempo offenses. They don’t mind it. They lap it up. And the defense is only going to get deeper as the freshmen become a larger part of the proceedings. Defensive tackle Haskell Garrett played a bit, as did cornerback Jeff Okudah. Others will be coming too. The depth here is incredible, but it would be meaningless without the freedom that the coaches feel to play so many different players.

It may be the captain Morgan but I laughed at comparing our defense to dogs having fun with a blasting hose

Alright it just hit me... 400 yards passing? 400 fucking yards passing? I don't care how snug coverage was that's unacceptable.

Where was the time out to adjust? Why did it take 2 quarters to Adjust? Yeah the other team made plays but OUs QB just went 19 of 20 in the first half. Better adjust faster next game or Mayfield will have 300 by the half.

Allowing 400 yards means 1 thing to me.. you didn't adjust fast enough. Next time adjust fast enough

Man, you probably hated our 2002 defense because they gave up a lot of passing yards

Just sayin': You can never hate any aspect of a team that wins the National Championship.

First game of the year with a totally new secondary. I seriously doubt we'll see in the Oklahoma game the same performance as we saw in the first half against Indiana.

Honestly neither do i.. it was sort of amazing how they completed every one of those fade type throws. That takes precise throws and great WRs which Oklahoma only has one of those in that equation

420 yards in a vacuum is the wrong way to look at it. That is just a counting stat, easily skewed by a high number of attempts.

They threw the ball 68 times. Look at the rate stat, i.e. Yards Per Attempt which tells you how good of a job they did every time they tried to throw.

IU 6.2
OSU 8.7

As a further point of reference, 6.2 YPA would have been good for 109th in the country last year as a team.

I know you like to get yourself worried about stuff. I would suggest worrying about OSU's passing offense more than pass defense.

I was out of my mind in the first half... Cobbs!!? Again!!?... but in retrospect, I feel a lot better about us going forward. Better than decent passing offense against a first time out secondary. Even in the first half you could see our guys' ability; lawd hammercy, Ward is fast and Sheffield, fugidabowit, that's a football player. The way you beat an offense like that is to hang in there and play good, in our case-great, run defense and get to the QB until the corrections get made. The rest of the country is going to see an opportunity (just like post-VT with the Bear-D) and we're going to win more of those WR/DB match-ups than we lose going forward.

I want to see us hold teams to 50 yards rushing or less this season. Constantly keeping teams in long passing downs will do nothing but let the defense feast and these young guys will get a ton of opportunities.

I stand by what I said before. Teams are going to get their passing yards, and some touchdowns. But, they wont control the game when they cant run and we'll get picks and hits and sacks and turnovers against opposing QBs with this front 7. Don't allow any team to run.

Also Barrett ended up with a higher QuarterBack Rating (i.e. QBR) of 76.7 than Lagow who had a QBR of 54.6. Lagow's 2 interceptions were "game changers" too.
