Better decisions lead to better offense
The streak wasn’t going to last forever, obviously, but Ohio State spent a whole half without a turnover and saw exactly how valuable that can be — especially for an offense with some talent limitations. The Buckeyes weren’t quite as sure-handed with the basketball or sound with their decisions in the second half, but the effort against Rutgers was still a marked improvement over most of the outings in January. It should come as no surprise, but avoiding self-inflicted mistakes and ending possessions with a shot instead of a giveaway is going to lead to better outcomes. Rutgers isn’t the toughest defense in the Big Ten by any stretch of the imagination, but that is the kind of fundamentally-sound work the Buckeyes will need to add to its win total in the weeks ahead.

2) Kind sir, please take this basketball
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, another victory was nearly snatched by the jaws of defeat. All because of turnovers.

If you’re a fan of efficient basketball offenses, then the latest OSU performance had you covering your eyes with your hands. The Bucks committed 18 TOs, which led to 22 Nittany Lion points. Basically, gifted basketballs kept PSU in the game.

The biggest offenders of the TO bug were Jackson (5) and Woods (4). On the other end, Josh Reeves had five steals—something he’s known for. Granted, it was kind of expected that Reeves was going to get a few steals, but for OSU to collectively give back the ball nearly 20 times? That’s not good.

I feel like there’s a little bit of Golden State basketball happening with OSU—and not the good kind. Careless ball handling lead to breakaway dunks on the other end, and bad passes squandered decent scoring chances.

Diagnosing the problem isn’t as simple as saying “make good passes”. Defenses are switching up their approach against Ohio State, and causing havoc as they move up the floor. One half it could be 2-3 zone, another half could be a press.

This problem needs to be massaged more in practice. Holtmann needs to put his starting five in defensive traps, and have them work the ball efficiently. He probably already does that now, but this is another data point where turnovers are nearly pushing OSU to the bottom of the Big Ten

Besides the 2 games against Northwestern (and even then the way this team can implode sometimes those arent givens), the remaining schedule is pretty brutal.

If they can beat NW twice that gives them 7 conference wins.

3 wins to get to 10-10 in the other 7 games might be hard to come by.

Illinois at home next week may be the make or break game.

Coach Holtmann is on 1070 The Fan with Dan Dakich now. Will update some thoughts:

-Had to adjust mid-season as a coach as much as he's ever had to
-Trying to be 3-5 possessions better each half and it's been a struggle
-Talked about keeping Kaleb's emotions in check, and opponents have sensed they can attack him to get frustration fouls
-Says they've gone to Andre in the post more because they have struggled to score and people (including him) have underestimated his ability with his back to the basket
-Ryan Pedon had recommended holding off on calling the slip play until the 2nd half. They knew IU was hedging hard and early and Holtmann wanted to run that play sooner, glad he saved it for when it mattered most- hard to run that twice
-Gave credit to Andre on his finish, especially with how a few minutes earlier he had caught the ball in transition and backed it out
-Credited Musa, despite 0 points, in providing length on Romeo and rebounding. Just turned 18 so he's still young, but seemed to take on the matchup with Langford as personal

That's about it. Quick, last minute call for Dan and Coach Holtmann. I'll post a sound bite when I see it.

Edit- audio (and video of Dakich's mug), starts at 2-hr mark

You know, I actually mentioned this on another site, but we have been running a lot of slip screen plays all year and I was shocked we weren't doing it more with how hard IU was hedging. I guess you can say we saved it for an opportune time, but if we run it earlier and more often, maybe it stops IU from hedging so hard and opens other things up. I kinda had that same feeling during the PSU game when we were getting beat off the dribble and kept asking why we weren't zoning such a poor 3pt shooting team, then we saved it for their last possession and got a shot clock violation.

I think there are too many possessions in a basketball game in order to hold things back for an opportune time. I guess maybe since we had the lead all game they figured they could hold off, but we almost waited too long, especially if CJ doesn't make that prayer of a push shot for three.
