2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

OHIO STATE CORNERBACKS KNOW THEY NEED TO IMPROVE, BUT NOT CHANGING THEIR COVERAGE PHILOSOPHY

97494_h.jpg

Ohio State’s passing defense hasn’t played up to expectations through its first six games of the 2018 season, and the play of its cornerbacks has been one reason why.

Kendall Sheffield, Damon Arnette and Jeffrey Okudah, the three cornerbacks who rotate at the two outside positions, have all given up their share of big receiving plays this season. Shaun Wade, Ohio State’s top slot cornerback, has had his ups and downs too, including being beat by Penn State wide receiver KJ Hamler on a slant route that went for a 93-yard touchdown, tying the longest play allowed by Ohio State’s defense this season and in school history.

At the same time, they haven’t made many big plays of their own, combining for just two interceptions (one each by Sheffield and Wade).

Ohio State currently ranks 58th in passing yards allowed per attempt (7.0), 60th in passing yards allowed per game (222.2) and tied for 85th in passes of 20-plus yards allowed (20), and in order to improve those numbers, their cornerbacks needs to be more consistent in coverage – a fact that cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson acknowledged in his first meeting with the media this season on Tuesday.

“I don’t think any of us are,” said Johnson, who is in his first year back coaching Ohio State’s cornerbacks, when asked if he is happy with the way they have played this season. “Because we’ve had our share of balls and we’ve been in position. We’ve had our share where we have been in position and we’ve gotten some (defensive pass interference penalties). That’s out of our control. And then with some other situations where we weren’t. So I think we’re all understanding, we’ve got to get a lot better.”

Arnette, who also met with the media for the first time this season on Tuesday, agreed with his coach that the cornerbacks have not played up to their expectations.

“We’re definitely not to our potential yet,” Arnette said. “There’s just little things we got to adjust to play better.”

Yeah, he looked bad there. But was that his responsibility? Could have been, but I don't recall. I thought that he had the outside. Will have to go back and look.

It wasn't Kendall's job. Pryor got pulled in by the playaction fake. He was supposed to be right there. Jordan Fuller cut the slant off on the other side. Pryor didn't do so on his side.

Kendall could've played him a little tighter to the inside because there was no TE or RB releasing to his side, but he stayed outside like he was supposed to.

I think maybe I had unrealistic expectations with/for Grinch. It's too early to be completely down on him, BUT his group is the lowest performing and while there has been player turnover, there's always been and will be, so it's his job to maintain the performance level. He's also not coaching athletic scrubs, although I get that the guys playing aren't necessarily ideal for their positions. I'd be sure that my expectations were/are unrealistic, but for the 180 degree relatively instantaneous improvement on the other side of the ball with a first year coach with NO official coaching experience.

Difference to me is that Hartline inherited a veteran crew that just needed some fundamentals cleaned up.

Grinch has inherited some guys that clearly are just not ready yet.

It would be like being down on Coombs back in the day because one of his 5 first round draft picks struggled early in his career.

So I guess I am saying, way too soon to question Grinch. If his guy, Pryor, picks it up in the second half this defense can be quite good.

Also, let us not forget how a lot of fans felt about Coach Coombs from 2012 up to the middle of the 2014 season.

Absolutely wasnt Sheffields fault... you can even see Kendall take a step left even when he knew where that WR was going. He was expecting help inside.

Pryor bit on the playaction there.

As for the new coaches? It's been 6 games.... they need time.

I think a numbe of us are in that same boat. We think that because OSU hired a coach, that he should almost immediately move mountains. It does take time to get guys to buy into your philosophy. And I admit that I was unrealistic like you, because he’s working with 4star(and high 3stars) kids, and he worked wonders with lower rated players at WSU. I’m sure it’ll take until the end of the season and until the next to get a Grinch going.

Let’s not forget that he’s also coaching guys that are learning to be cover Safeties as well. He’s trying to break their bad habits and get them up to speed of the college game in their first real game reps.

This defense is beat to shit right now...

Probably without Copper and Harrison this weekend. I really wish we had the bye week next week (or at least play Nebraska instead of Purdue).

Not too sure how the hell we are going to gut it out next week on the road and at night. This defense is running on reserves (literally) at this point.

Purdue scares me big time for next week.

Maybe let’s get through this week before getting into the cart for Purdon’t. Beat Minny!
