2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

Feels 09-ish.

Didn't quite expect us to be this good defensively so soon.

Looks like coaching changes made a world of difference. (Sooooooo shocked)
Honestly I'm not shocked... the talent was always there.

How can a 245 pound fast athlete like Baron Browning look so clueless last year? Had nothing to do with talent.

Even Arnette for example. Dude is 6 foot 1 200 pounds and can run. He's always had this ability just not the system.

Sarcasm, bubs. I was highly critical of the defensive staff as were others. That attitude has so far been vindicated in this early season.

I've been around long enough to see more than one OSU team look unbeatable for large stretches, especially early, in a season only to have a fatal flaw finally exploited by a team good enough to do it late in the year.

Both FAU and IU had some success in the middle of the field with the short passing game.

Just keep in mind any team that can protect an accurate passer reasonably well and has some TE/big WR talent can be a threat to this defense. May not be many, or any, of those out there and it's hard to keep up with an offense like OSU's while dinking and dunking over the middle all day but just keep it in mind.

Just remember, that’s all been out of the single-high safety look.

When they went to two-high safeties, Josh Proctor got his hands on two balls over the middle.

My hunch is that they were comfortable playing mostly cover 1 & cover 3. But they finally decided to put cover 4 & cover 6 on film. They absolutely have answers to the over the middle passing, they just didn’t go to it until later in the game Saturday. Probably by design.

it involves Tuf not being asked to drop back and cover the middle.. I love that kid and everything he’s given for this program but pass happy teams he is a liability if he’s asked to cover he just doesn’t have “it” in coverage....

I think Browning is progressing well enough to be involved on the passing downs. OR Tuf comes out and White goes in.

Yeah Tuf will probably not play as much against the spread teams lol...

Interesting that Okudah, Browning, Harrison, Tuff, Smith/Friday, and Jashon didn't get champions.

Looks like the staff thought we could've done better on defense. Scary part is they could've.

Harrison missed on a sack that allowed Ramsey to run for 20+ lead to their field goal, Okudah ran into Arnette which allowed another 20+, and then the trick play for 50 and a TD was a blown assignment on Harrison.

Not only that but take a look at our recruiting the past couple of years. Arguably more talent on the defensive side of the ball than offense. No way in hell should our defense look like it's barely capable of stopping a MAC school.

I'm not sure we will ever see as bad of a defensive staff as we had last season. Just criminal considering the money they made.

I started the season with the idea that there was some combination of a commie plot, alien forces, and bad juju that caused that defense to perform the way they did. After seeing a lot of the same guys play very well, I'm leaning toward suing the coaching leadership of last year's defense for malpractice.

Honestly yes... Grinch particularly did nothing.

Nothing recruiting and nothing for on the field results.

I looked at Oklahoma's defense several times this year (and they are better in some ways this year but we are talking about the B1G12 here), and I saw a lot of what I saw with Ohio State's 2018 defense. At the same time, I gotta put this on Schiano. What in the hell was he doing last year? I suspect it was thinking about what he was going to do in 2019.
