2022-2023 Ohio State Men's Basketball

I think that’s the big if though, does he save the class, especially with how the team has just regressed and given up at this point.

Curious folks take on whether the buyout would matter if we saw a similar regression in the football team.

If Ryan Day went 5-7 after getting his extension he'd probably have cleaned out his office a month ago. Football is too big to tolerate that.

But what looks worse - giving an extension to a guy who then has his worst season, or firing him less than a year after extending him?

It all looks bad right now. The risk is continuing down this path for another season and seeing a similar outcome. Is what we’ve seen of Holtman’s ceiling worth what we know can be his floor?

Right now, we’re banking on keeping a top class together and not losing key players from this team. Even if this happens it’s going to be a young team. My concern is hearing again about the freshman wall and seeing the January swoon that we’re so accustomed to.

while they may never be held to the standards, it’s a bit ridiculous that we don’t have higher standards for the basketball program.

Taking this season out (for now), Holtmann as been at or above the program's historical norms pretty much across the board. And if you take out the Matta era, he's right there with Fred Taylor with one large exception.

Now obviously he's *not* Fred Taylor or Matta, and clearly this season is a step back, but let's not act like a bunch of Kentucky or UNC fans thinking the Elite 8 is our birthright. Hell even Big Ten titles haven't been anything like the norm minus 1 (literally 1) stretch at the height of the Matta era.

Next year will be make or break. Far less turnover on the roster, another great recruiting class and this years recruiting class gets a year of growth/maturity/etc. Until then I refuse to get upset or even really care that much. I bought in to the hype of the recruiting class and sort of ignored the chemistry issues that usually are present when you replace 9 players. Nothing that's happened short of the strong start has shocked me. Disappointed, yes. But not shocked.

Way too generous in my opinion. He took a program fresh off a great run by Matta with kids still high on OSU and slowly lets the air out. Surprisingly , his recruiting has been his strength. His in game coaching and strategy is abysmal.

If next year is the make or break year then I’d say Sweet 16 or he’s out.

Uhh...the program wasn't "fresh off" of anything at the end of the Matta era.

The problem is all he needs to do is make the dance and he isn’t going anywhere. This thought that tOSU can’t have both a high caliber football and basketball program is just BS and an acceptance of the current mediocrity.

Holtman has shown nothing but mediocrity in his time here. He’s lost the team and locker room in more than one season and gets extended. It’s just sad to be honest.

That may be the difference in opinions here between some? I've been a hardcore Buckeye basketball fan since the Jimmy Jackson days. I could see if you are not a big basketball fan, this wouldn't be that concerning. I'm not sure if you are a big fan or more of a casual fan.

I will say Mike, you keep mentioning that CCH is "at or above" historical norms, that is not true. You are judged on your successes, or failures, when the pressure is the highest. You don't get trophies for the pre-conference slate, you get it for regular season title, conference tourney, and March Madness. When Jim O'Brien and Randy Ayers have more success than you, that's a concern. You don't get to use winning percentage in the cupcake scheduling era that was not nearly the same in prior decades to justify success when you are beating Robert Morris, Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, St. Francis, Maine, Alabama A&M....and that's over half their wins right there!

The 'careful what we wish for' - we're in 13th out of 14th place, we've won two games this calendar year, we just scored 41 points at a home game, never advanced past the opening weekend, etc. what does worse look like? At least I'd be able to stomach this if there was a coach who couldn't recruit talent, the results would at least make sense there! When you can recruit at his rate and still not produce, it's even more clear he is not the answer.

And Matta was run out of town on a rail by the "fan"base.... Careful what you wish for....
Yup. His back issues and the drop foot were devastating to his ability on the recruiting trail and overall coaching effectiveness. Was on a legendary trajectory but alas.

Now they'll run Holtmann out so I hope it doesn't bite us in the ass for the next decade. This year is awful to be sure but if he leaves and the next guy has three straight losing seasons then what?
