What if McCarthy plays like the ass that he is and they just lose games instead of falling backwards into wins so often?

He can be mediocre and they can probably run all over the Rutgers, Maryland & Corn of the world. The running game would really have to stall against the weaker opponents for McCarthy to be put in position to actually lose those games. McCarthy isn't great by any means but he's at least ok enough to make you have to somewhat respect the pass.

If McCarthy goes down though they really have zero threat of the pass. Their backups are a Indiana reject who has 5 TDs/6INTs in his career and a former walk on who had zero FBS offers out of HS. They definitely aren't winning those "fall back into wins" type games with either of those jabronis at the helm.

2 to the portal for scUM

RJ Moten who has been a somewhat consistent contributor to their defense

WR AJ Henning, who they were always hyped on (was a 4* #102 Overall player in the 2020 class) only caught 25 passes in 3 seasons though.

Henning is a "meh" loss but even though they are downplaying Moten, losing a veteran experienced contributor is always at least some sort of blow.

I keep wondering how teams can lose veteran players and even 2nd string guys and act like it has no effect. Depth is needed and is one of those things that is not important until it is crucial. I get it. We reload blah blah blah...next man up. But those were 2 good players. And losing depth hurts. Moten really seems odd to me. I will understand more if wants to move closer to home......he may be a grad transfer and just wants to finish near home?

20!? Holy shit that's absurdly high
Obviously not up to date because this is from January and they’ve had a few transfers since, and I don’t feel like putting more time into this, but they were at 19 in January.

As of Jan. 6, 2023, we project that Michigan is at 104 scholarships, well over the limit of 85.

It seems like because of their scholarship # crunch they are going to push the veterans out, even if they were a contributor, if the position is "crowded" they are going to keep the younger players. Even if unproven.

Will be interesting to see how the rest of this plays out.

You'd think telling a bunch of vets to kick rocks because you took on too many scholarships in favor of unproven younger players might not sit too well in the locker room though.

Being 5-8 over seems like a lot. And when exactly do they fall off? I mean is that counting kids who graduate in the Spring and will "fall off" in the Summer? Or is that guys that are projected or could be playing in the Fall. Hmmm I will be back. Maybe just read the article stupid.

Ok so 5 guys are walk-ons that will lose theirs if needed. So that is now say 14ish. Or maybe even down to 10 already. I mean once you get to single digits things will get clearer. I am almost positive that you have to push out the old guys to a B10 rule that you must honor 4 years of scholarships. So any dude that has been there on scholly 4 years is in jeopardy of getting it yanked.

Again you can not help but feel like he was planning on being gone by now and not have to deal with this mess he created.

So... what this tells me is that they do not consider themselves to be championship contenders. If you're only a player or two away from possibly winning it all, it seems foolish to push veterans out in favor of younger guys..... But, what do I know?

Not like a lot of the "younger guys" were all world recruits either

"Well this guy has contributed and been a decent player for us for the last few years, but he's too old now so we need to boot him aside for these 3* kids who have proven nothing on the field" - Sound decision making.

Apparently they are down to 7 now as I went looking. 5 more days to push a bunch of people off the boat...

How many times has that happened in 2 years? Once to TCU, and once against.... was it Georgia in 2021?
Instead of waiting for them to lose the games they should lose, how about someone just beat them?
