5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

Very disappointing that these guys would put the program in jeapordy for a few free tattoos. Very heartening to see Ohio State's prompt response. Are you watching SEC?

Pryor? I don't know. He hasn't really done anything that could be a hanging offense, but the incidents of small to medium poor judgement just seem to keep piling up with this latest being the most egregious. I'm not saying he should go, but I personally wouldn't shed any tears should he choose to take his talents to the NFL.

It would be interesting if he was the starter and happens to win our first 5 games and TP is still on the team...what happens then?

:osu:
I think that's why we have to let this WHOLE thing play out some more.

How many games will the final suspension be?
If it's reduced and/or Tressel uses the Sugar Bowl as 1 game, is it enough to have Pryor back?

If Pryor is willing to come back after 3/4/5 games next year, then I think that changes who starts and who sits. Braxton would redshirt still (or have limited reps) and Tress would look to Guiton or Bauserman to carry the Bucks to start the year and then give it back to Pryor (if he earns it). If he's not back, I have to think it'll be time to get the future started, dependent on how Braxton shows during his 8+ months of practice before the first game.

And to think, we had pretty much penned in Pryor as breaking every Ohio State offensive record the next year and possibly bringing the 8th Heisman. Can never guarantee anything with kids.

My impression: 5 games is harsh. I really don't mind the Athletic Department appealing this. I know about the AJ Green situation and I thought it was bullshit at the time, and I still think its bullshit. However, I do think they should be suspended for the Sugar Bowl and for a few games next year.

To those that think its chump change: $1200 would allow me to live for about 2 months. Some of us don't make much money and anything that we can get would be very very helpful. Given the unemployment levels for the region (nation?) it would be IMMORAL for the players not to do whatever they can to help family members.

However, we don't know what the background information is for these players' story. Some of them may have just used the cash to buy some things, others may have used it to pay Mom's mortgage. Its speculation, but from what Gene Smith was saying about "mitigating circumstances" in regards to the economic situation, it may be that it is family/unemployment related for some of these players.

I can tell you, if my family needed money, and I was sitting on a gold/diamond ring, NCAA be damned, I'm helping them with no regrets, absolutely NONE. The NCAA sits on a self-righteous golden-moral mountain that the student-athletes cannot reciprocate in many circumstances.

Please keep in mind, nothing they did was illegal (at least to my knowledge). They have violated NCAA rules, not the laws of mankind. I would ask that some of us keep this in perspective.

Good points, but it still burns because the players KNOW they are not supposed to do that and there are other ways to get money.

Just got off work.

I"m extremely disappointed to hear this. Especially after how it was dismissed just 24 hours ago.

Selling your rings and gold pants? - C'mon fellas, those are things that us mere normal folks would kill to have the ability to play for and earn.

The whole tattoo story was regarding Jordan Whiting.

These other 5 are separate from that issue. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I thought that the press conference said it was separate.

Whiting wasn't the only one who was involved with 'discounted services', but he apparently didn't sell a ring or gold pants.

As part of their reinstatement, Adams must repay $1,000 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring and Herron must repay $1,150 for selling his football jersey, pants and shoes for $1,000 and receiving discounted services worth $150.

Posey must repay $1,250 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,200 and receiving discounted services worth $50, while Pryor must repay $2,500 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring, a 2009 Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award and his 2008 Gold Pants, a gift from the university.

so should Pryor just go pro now? What's his motivation to come back and sit 5 games next season?

also, do you guys feel the coaches should suspend these players for the bowl game? I know the NCAA has suspended them next season, but as an institution of higher learning first, do you think they deserve to play in this game? Putting aside the fact it really hampers your chances of winning. What do you think?

Initial Reaction:

Man just disappointment. You are the leader on this team. The rules are the rules, as shitty as they may be. You have to be smarter than that.

Herron should leave, I doubt that he will get his job back. Adams will probably go. Posey will probably go.

Pryor won't win the Heisman. People also aren't gonna be making excuses for him anymore.

They need to learn from this and grow as a TEAM. Huge lessons must be taken from this.

Can we still win a National Championship??? Maybe.

And I feel TERRIBLE for Coach Tressel. It must be gut wrenching to know that people take those Big Ten Championships for granted. He must be hurt. And he was Terrelle's biggest believer. I guess lessons must be learned somehow.

I know that these kids have to worry about their families. But I'll tell you what. They get a FREE education. I am in college and I'm in way more debt than they are I guarantee you that.

Who will be the starting QB at the beginning of next year???

It's just sad.

Go Bucks.

Well, dude, Guiton knows the entire system (two full years), has repped countless times against one of the best defenses in the country, throws a helluva ball (yeah, it was only the spring game, but his potential was clearly evident), is quick and shifty, and although he has only thrown a few game passes, he does have game experience.

Tressel is not going to burn Miller's redshirt simply to salvage a five-game stretch. We have three other scholarship QBs (Guiton, Bauserman, and Graham) who likely can get us through those games...we'll clearly be riding the backs of our defense those games.

But aside from missing Adams, our OL will not be different than had Adams not been suspended, so our running game will not be changed much, and with the stable of backs we have the running game can assume some of the offensive burden.

If Brewster goes early, our offense will be in big trouble. Lets say Adams and Pryor come back and sit 5 games. We can probably go 4-1 with Brewster in there. If he goes pro, you are looking at 3-2.

How is that analysis and not a blatant personal attack? It sounds like Herbie being a bitter asshole. He's a grown man. He's 40! He shouldn't be picking petty media battles with Terrelle Pryor.

Probably still stinging from Pryor's "Fake Buckeye, fake as hell" tweet about Herbie. Obviously no love lost there.

All of you guys trashing Herbie last night, where did you go? :roll1:

I'm shocked at how much crap gets spread his way.

I guess the suspensions may get reduced to maybe 3 games but if not oh well. The kids broke the rules and must pay the price.

These kids didn't kill anybody, but they broke a rule and deserve whatever punishment is deemed appropriate.

I'm guessing Herbstreit knows more about Pryor and his attitude than most people on this site combined and am sure that some of his negative comments are not made without solid information.

I think the double-edged sword here is:

Suspend all of them for the bowl and lose and people will say 0-10 against SEC. Win with them and people will say why didn't you suspend them.

Or you can choose Door No. 3 and suspend them and still win by being the better team on Jan. 4.
