A Few Observations from A-Deck

Do we need to remind people that although Joe is 26,000 years old his football game experience is limited and he's actually going through a game learning experience. That being said he's playing at a good level and hopefully will improve at seeing the entire field. The game needs to slow down more for him.

And yes, I realize he's throwing to Justin Blackmon and he's in OKST's system, but Baus isn't the only former major leaguer leading a top team.

After re-watching this game, I have one comment that I don't think I've seen mentioned.

Early in the 4th quarter, tOSU had a 1st down on Toledo's 37 yard line. First down was a loss of two, second down I believe was an incomplete pass, and then there was a 3rd and 12 from the 39 yard line. Bauserman threw deep down the middle for Devin Smith, who was fairly well covered on the play, and the ball fell incomplete, followed by a punt.

Before Joe threw the ball, Hyde had gone out to the right flat, realized he was wide open, and raised his arm in the air to draw attention to that fact. If the ball was tossed anywhere near him, Carlos would have caught it and waltzed into the red zone, and may well have scored, depending on whether the 2 Toledo DBs in the deep middle got to him around the 10 yard line. Rarely have I seen a RB in the flat so completely uncovered with such a vast open space in front of him on that half of the field.

I've seen a lot of positive comments about Joe hitting his checkdowns and throwing the ball away in the first two weeks. But if he'd looked for Hyde, or even noticed the raised arm out of the corner of his eye, the odds were pretty good that the rest of 4th quarter would have been a whole lot less nerve-wracking.

I blame Bucky Katt

(reminds me of a certain blitz we saw in the Shoe together where all a certain Oakland Raider had to do was turn his head to look and he'd have seen a certain Alabama player wide open)

Yep, was in C-deck for that one, it was right in front of me, couldn't believe how open he was...

1. Something about our section - there are, how can I put this delicately - there is no good way to do it. Lots of huge fake tits in our section. It's going to be a wonderful season, even if we don't win another game. Really good season.

2. Braxton looked very uncomfortable for the first few series, though his running was exceptional. His presence in the game just requires the defense to think about so many more things than if another QB were in there. And his confidence seemed to grow as the game progressed.

3. Receivers have apparently been hitting the concrete pretty hard. (Literally.) I recommend rosin and grippy gloves instead.

4. Great to see Reid Fragel catch a couple. He's a big guy with good hands who also happens to be a terrific blocker. Just a solid tight end.

5. Devin Smith is The Truth. We'll love this guy for the next four years.

6. We'll love Braxton for the next four years, too.

7. Lots of opportunities for personal growth on defense. Tackling, which has been such a strength of the Buckeyes over the recent few years, is mediocre right now. Our CBs did not have their best day today, either, though I have to say Colorado has a couple of first-class receivers in Clemons and Richardson.

8. Jordan Hall's absence really hurt us against Toledo, and even more so in the second half against Miami. Great vision, really fine inside runner for a pretty small guy. Just a football player.

9. Saw almost no Donato's being consumed today.

10. Did I mention all the really well-endowed chicks in my section? This is going to be a very good season.
