relaxxxxx...........this isn't a flame, just a tidbit from the BN recruiting board from Chris Pool (the Scout Midwest guru) i thought i would share for those that are interested...........as for my 2 cents, i think Mr. Ginn obviously sells the benefits of OSU to his guys, and the benefits of going to OSU are MANY, including the teammates.........but i think this should help put into perspective that Glenville to OSU is not as much of a rock solid guarantee as some would like to believe

I saw the thread about Daven Jones developing so I thought I'd share a little something with you.

I spoke last night in length with Tedd Ginn Sr. and we talked about the Glenville-Ohio State pipeline.

Coach Ginn told me that there isn't a pipeline. He said his job is to develop the kids and help them get their education. If it's Kent or Ohio State, it doesn't matter.

He did say something that did make a lot of sense to me. He said people may see that we have an Ohio State pipeline here but the truth is that a lot of these kids have former teammates at Ohio State and the kids that he has at Ohio State want their former teammates to join them.

Coach Ginn says he takes his kids to a lot of camps during the summer and has respect for every college coach. He mentioned Kirk Ferentz and Barry Alvarez by name.

Lastly, Coach Ginn said to me..."Chris, Ohio State can't take everybody and I have 11 D-1 kids."

If memory serves me, either Coach Ginn or one of his players mentioned previously how Coach Ginn preaches you need to give back to the community and OSU is part of the community.

It may not be a formal pipeline, but I'm not aware of a Glenville kid that has turned down an offer from Coach Tressel. I want to keep it coming because the kids are talented and for the most part are exactly the recruits we want.

In support of your statement, OSU did get Ginn, Jr. In opposition, I think OSU wanted Pierre Woods pretty bad.

this has been the case so far, and i guess i'm in the minority, but i just don't see every Glenville guy OSU wants as a lock..........i think we have a great to excellent chance with all of them, and would frankly be suprised if we didn't land one, but i'm willing to accept the possibility that a high profile guy goes somewhere else.............one thing that sticks out to me was Troy Smith naming WVU his leader all along, and was very sincere about it, and he said in his own words, at the last minute that he went to OSU because that's what his mother wanted, not for any of the reasons that we would have liked to have heard

I have very little doubt that TG Sr.'s recruiting priorities stack up like this:

1. What is best for the player.
2. What is best for tOSU.

I think Ted Ginn loves Ohio State and many of his players choose the University because his endorsement as a great coach and human being weighs heavy in their minds. He knows that for many of these boys, being close to home, playing with friends and going to a world class institution for free is a wonderful opportunity. He doesn't sell the school by pushing, he sells it everytime he talks about all the former players that have success here and all the great opportunities and traditions.

That being said, sometimes you KNOW when one school is a better fit for someones personality or life's ambition than another. If Ted Sr. knew that one of his players could have a better life by going to USC, Oklahoma or even scUM...he would advise them to do so in a heartbeat.

As much as I love Ohio State, my brother is deciding on a college right now and tOSU's atmosphere will eat him alive and make him miserable. It's not his personality. I am advising him to go to one of his other final choices because I care about him more than I am in love with the institution. Ginn Sr. cares about a lot of his players like they are family...they are his priority and while for most of them the best thing is to go to tOSU, that isn't always the case.

Woods was the first of the Glenville stars, and he committed to Michigan before John Cooper was fired and Jim Tressel was hired. He would have gone to OSU if JT had been the coach at the time of his commitment. OSU has not lost a Glenville player since then. So, I guess that the "Glenville to OSU" pipeline might be more accurately described as the "Ginn to Tressel" pipeline.

Troy Smith, like Curtis Terry after him, made a last-minute decision to attend OSU because that's when his offer arrived - at the last minute. Smith favored WVU because OSU didn't offer him until the end of January, 2002.

seriously, where do people come up with this stuff???..........maybe you should check the facts before you completely discredit what i've said......my statement was based on the words out of Troy Smith's mouth, not sure what yours is based on.........now for the facts:

from an update on 11/2/01

"Ohio State is pretty much in the lead now," four star quarterback/athlete Troy Smithhttp://midwestrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=207 said. "I've been talking to my family. That's what moved Ohio State up."

He has offers from all of the schools on his list.

as you can see, he favored OSU a few months before signing day, he was previously favoring WVU, he didn't just switch at the last minute because he suddenly received an offer.........and also as you can see his family played a very important role in his decision........after his visit to WVU in December he clearly stated them as his leader, and then:

from 1/27/02 after his OSU visit

“The visit went good, real good.”

So who is his favorite?

“West Virginia is right now,” he said. “But Ohio State pulled a little closer and are in second place right now.”

signing day straight from his mouth

"It was simply because my mom wanted me to make a decision and she wanted me to go to Ohio State. She likes Ohio State's tradition and she likes me staying close to home."

although he did add

"And I like the tradition. The facilities are great. The coaching staff is great. I like the players. It's close to home. It's a perfect fit for me."

"They're supposed to send me a letter of intent tomorrow. I'm going to tell West Virginia tonight. I'm glad to be a Buckeye."

point is he was NOT a buckeye all along, and he wasn't simply stating WVU to save face, according to all the public updates and according to his words he had an offer months before signing day..........and as is evidenced by his own words it was a last minute decision that was most heavily influenced by his mother and his family

Yes because kids always tell the truth. Anyone who was following that recruitment at the time knows from a few sources Kurelic, Duane, etc that he didn't have an offer untill very late in the game.
