Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

Very excited about this hire! Every year OU won a national title, they won it with great defense. Grinch brings hope to a program that's been lusting for its eighth national title since the early Bob Stoops days!
I think it's a good hire, but he's still somewhat unproven. He improved Wazzou's D, but ours was largely a disaster this year. Plus, he made some, um, questionable personnel decisions in his position group until an injury forced his hand. How much of our porous defense was on him in an unknown. But given the shit show OU's D was, it can't really get worse. I'd be cautiously optimistic.

Same, but if we DO keep Schiano, i think we'll be okay. His 2016 and 2017 defenses were very, very good. For whatever reason, he and Grinch didn't mesh.

Re: ALEX GRINCH: CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND SAFETIES COACH
After pulling the Washington State defense out of the dregs and turning it into a productive unit, Alex Grinch was hired by Ohio State as its 10th assistant coach and was immediately made co-defensive coordinator, along with his duties as safeties coach. He entered the program with high expectations and midway through his first season, he hasn’t reached them.

Re: Grinch grew up in Grove City, Ohio and graduated from Grove City High School. He played football and graduated from the University of Mount Union (Alliance, OH). His wife is from Alliance, OH.

(We may never know for sure, but) I just wonder if Grinch actually wanted to leave or Ryan Day told him that he wouldn't be retained.

I would be too. But what I think Grinch will bring is more consistency to this group that hasn't been shown since 2008 when OU led the nation in turnover margin and had an All-American and future NFL top 5 draft pick in Gerald McCoy.

I do not think Grinch will turn this defense into the '85 Bears overnight, he will need some time and definitely a lot of patience from Sooner fans. But this defense cannot get any worse now, that's for sure.
