Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

Very excited about this hire! Every year OU won a national title, they won it with great defense. Grinch brings hope to a program that's been lusting for its eighth national title since the early Bob Stoops days!

I told you before the year started that they wouldn't win a Championship with that defense. It was historically bad. I also didn't expect OSU to have the struggles they experienced on defense. You were right about Murray and the OU offense, I was right about Haskins and the OSU offense.

Not sure what Grinch will bring to the table for OU, bc I still really don't know what he was responsible for here. All I do know, which has been stated in this thread already, it didn't work here.

Grinch's official title was Co-DC and safties coach, I believe? I believe Schiano called the plays in. Both were involved in game planning. That's the main reason he's in Norman now.... wanted his own defense to run, not this splitting duties stuff.

I thought Schiano was in charge of the Buckeye D???
Co defensive coordinator.

Grinch is responsible for knowing who our best player is at the position he coaches and he failed big time there. Our safety White sat for 8+ games when he was clearly one of our 2 best.

In Grinches only year we set records for the worst defense of all time.

Maybe he works there... but don't be shocked if it doesn't.

Shouldn't you be updating the hardware count in your avatar's tag line?

Do we really know that HE made the call on White sitting? If so, then I agree, he should be gone

Grinch was Co-DC and safeties coach. For whatever reason, he and Schiano didn't mesh. Schiano was Co-DC with Fickell in 2016 and the sole DC in 2017. Both of those were excellent defenses. When Grinch came on this season, our D went in the toilet. May have been a case of "too many cooks in the kitchen" or that they just didn't complement eachother as well as Schiano/Fickell.

His safeties were really bad until an injury forced Brandon White onto the field in early November. Things got significantly better when he started playing. I'd tend to believe playing two subpar kids over White (who was immediately one of our best defensive players) was his call, and a very bad one.

How he will fair on his own remains to be seen. He is a well thought of coach that some real heavyweights wanted, but there's not a lot of concrete data to say how good he will be. I don't like that he's gone without getting a chance to run the D, but after the way the D played this year with him on staff, I'm okay with it.

I have no idea if this refers to Grinch/OSU or Oklahoma. Either way, probably not a great look for Alex.

I read it as him wanting tOSU to recruit him. But, yeah, not a good look for Grinch.

Pure speculation, but i wonder if he realized early on that it wasn't going to be a good fit in Columbus and didn't go all out in recruiting. For a supposedly young/dynamic coach, he didn't move the needle really at all on the recruiting trail.

I’ll take the semi-unpopular opinion of good riddance. Not so much in him not being a good coach- which remains tbd, imo. But...if he’s that butthurt about 1 season with a “Co” title- a title he knew about coming into the job, then he can go do his thing. So much for being bought into the program and the state of Ohio.

I now question his desire and coaching this past year if he’s bailing this quickly, especially with the job potentially open (Schiano). Was he throwing this fit all year?

Note- I have always hated the Co Coordinator titles, so I’m with him on that but come on dude. You knew this.
