Head Coach
Thought of a interesting thread. Give the best collective units you've seen at OSU during your life time. I think we've done all time best line ups but never best units.

QB- 2015 with CJ, JT and Braxton
RB- 2018 with JK and Mike
WR- 2005 with Ginn, Holmes and Gonzo
TE-2015 Heurman and Vannet
OL- 1994 with Stringer, Pace and Gholston (2015 damn close with Decker, Price, Pat and Jamarco)

DL-2017 just the sheer numbers we had. 2002 was damn close though
LB-2005 Hawk, Carp and Schlegal was so much fun.
Safety- 2002 Doss and Nickey
CB- 2016 with Conley, Lattimore and Ward

Return teams- 2005 Ginn and Holmes.

Some quick thoughts. Might have more later;

FB- 1995 Sualua and Matt Calhoun
Return teams-1995 Terry Glenn and Shawn Springs
S-I would argue any number of combinations other than Doss and Nickey. Nickey was god awful in coverage. God awful.
RB-1993 Eddie, Raymont Harris and By'not'e as a full group. Thought about Byars and Woolridge from the mid 80's as well. People forget how good Kieth Byars was.

I loved me some Mike Doss, but he could be a bit of a liability in coverage as well. Again, one of my all time favorite Buckeyes but he had holes in his game for sure. I don't remember who was with Damon Moore, but Moore himself comes to mind (the Mike Doss before Mike Doss)... Anderson Russell would be a shoe-in if he could catch, lol.

just looked it up, Moore played with Rob Kelly.... yeah, I nominate Moore and Kelly.... of course, there's also Gary Berry and Moore to consider (1998)

CB - I nominate Shawn Springs, Antoine Winfield, and Ty Howard. (Ahmed Plummer, was also on the squad with these guys... yowza).... Probably a bit ahead of Winfield, Plummer and Nate Clements.
LB - Bellisari, Katzenmoyer, Ryan Miller, Jerry Rudzinkski (1996) or Katzenmoyer, Rudzinksi, Nail Diggs (1998)

While I'm on the 90s kick, it's tough to leave David Boston and Dee Miller off a list of WR, but I think I'd still take Holmes, Ginn and Gonzo .... the 3rd WR to Boston and Miller doesn't get there .. Reggie Germany or Ken-yon Rambo? Nope... Miller was the 3rd WR to Boston and Demetrious Stanley.. but.. Miller wasn't yet Dee Miller and D Stanley was a good player, but I'd say below both of Homes and Ginn.

Edit: And, of course, that Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo unit was backed up by the likes of Brian Robiskie (a nice College WR), Brian Hartline, Roy Hall and Ray Small.. Daaaayyyum.

As much as I love JK and Mike, they havent earned this nomination yet.
Didnt we have Carlos Hyde and Zeke at the same time one year? 92' had Raymont Harris, Eddie George, Butler By'not'e AND Robert Smith...

The D-Line discussion also needs to include Mike Vrable, Matt Finkes, Luke Fickell... and any of the 4th guys they played with. Tough to get beyond the depth OSU enjoyed last year, though. Still, that 2014-15 D-Line earns a place in the discussion as well, in my IMO (And oh my, if OSU had Noah Spence too.. as they coulda, woulda, shoula.)

Defensive Backfield

1998

Winfield, Plummer, Moore and Berry. Nate Clements was a backup.
2015

CB1 Apple 1st | Ward 1st
CB2 Conley 1st | Lattimore 1st

S Bell 2nd | Hooker 1st
S Powell - | Barnes - (I'd list Webb here)

5 1st round picks. An injury and a false accusation kept them from all being top-11 picks, and Bell has been pretty good in the NFL.

Oh, and the "weak link" of that group had one of the biggest picks in school history, was the MVP of the NC game.

Some years recently they didn't have a 4th safety. Smith was also banged up a lot.
I'd just never heard of anyone named "Barnes" I thought maybe you meant Burrows, or maybe Bryant (though he was gone by then) was auto-corrected to Barnes or something... Turns out, you know what you're talking about, as I did a roster search .. and sure enough, there's Jarrod Barnes - a transfer in from Louisville who recorded a single tackle in 2 career games, none of which occurred at OSU. So, in that case, I'd list Webb too, as you said.

One factor for these unit comparisons is what you do with a future stud that wasn't one then, like Zeke with Hyde. Zeke is a legend just shy of Archie/Eddie, but he was not that way in 2013 with Hyde. Frankly, he wasn't that way in September 2014 (true frosh, h-back Curtis Samuel was a better RB that night).

I was thinking about this with the Eddie and Raymont Harris vote. Eddie wasn't E-D-D-I-E in 1993.

I have long been an advocate of the 1998 secondary being the best unit in OSU history but the '15-16 unit has surpassed them imo.

They had no need to use Malik Hooker before the rout was on. 12 months later, Malik may have turned in the greatest season ever for an OSU safety.

Also, Tyvis may have been one of the greatest interviews in Buckeye history as well. That 2014 team was way too much fun. (yes I'm switching squads)
