Amaris Williams (DL Auburn)

Day and Company will need to talk with boosters about a portal campaign for DL.

I know you guys don’t like bidding wars but sometimes you have to go into triage.
I am all about a bidding war on the right guys when a position becomes this dire, including in the portal. I'm not the one bidding though, so my opinion doesn't matter. You can't do this poorly on DL recruiting and come out unscathed (OL to some extent as well).

I think the situation will be more regulated in upcoming years, but for now we are getting hammered at key positions. I would prefer just landing those guys with good recruiting and pointing to success at each position, but on DL I think the inevitable departure of LJ Sr could be equally (if not more) to blame...kids want to know who their coach is going to be for 3-4 years.

It is, we are going to get this every year until he does actually retire. Schools coming in full out swinging at the end with the "you know that coach is retiring soon, right?" talk. It works, you can't blame the kids but Day needs to recognize this and make a change.

I agree with your bidding philosophy. There are programs like auburn that are rumored to be dropping $400k or more on some 5 star hs recruits (just rumors).

That’s absolutely ridiculous unless it’s a potentially generational qb prospect or something like that, and even then it seems crazy.

Texas A&M showed how that worked out and auburn looks like they’re going to be the next aggy, just with a sleazier coach who has never won jack shit. At least Jimbo won a natty, as overrated as he was he did have that. All Hugh freeze has is NCAA sanctions and accusations of forcing teenage girls to undress while as a girls basketball coach at a Tennessee high school.

Some Amaris quotes cited in this article:
“Nah,” said Williams, when asked if he was truly considering Florida down the stretch. “They were really out of the stretch when I went to Ohio State, like the second time I went.

“Auburn was actually my second SEC offer. They offered me in January. Florida swore up and down that they offered me before Auburn, which they didn’t. I told Auburn that I wasn’t considering Auburn a while back, but what a coincidence. I started talking to them again and then committing.”

“One big thing that really tipped it off, I’m not really going to say, but it was one thing that really made a difference between Ohio State and Auburn, and I knew I wasn’t going to Florida, but people were saying coach Johnson was retiring and he had a contract that ended in January but he had never signed a new one, so I didn’t think he was actually going to stay, because if he stayed, he would have signed a contract, a new one.”

How about be upfront and ask the guy himself if that was a real concern? Bcuz it wasn’t. It was about NIL. These recruits’ parents are teaching them all the wrong ways to prioritize and view money. Just imagine how these guys are gonna act if they make it to the NFL? They’ll be holding out till the playoffs as rookies lol

If you had multiple job offers, but found out the would-be boss at your 1a was quitting... how serious do you take that job offer?
Ive been in that exact situation before. I went with 1b and never regretted it.

If he’s for sure quitting? Yeah I’m choosing door B. But if it’s all rumors I’m gonna ask. I’ve been in that position too. But he told me before anybody else that he was definitely leaving. It wasn’t other companies gossiping that he MAY leave. Big difference.
