Anyone Using High Quality Headphones ?

Taosman

Your Cousin In New Mexxico
Anyone using high quality headphones?
I have 2 pair of Grados.
I have a pair of Grado SR60s for the computer.
And a pair of more expensive Grado SR80s for late night sessions.
These are excellent phones. And I highly recommend them both.
The Grado SR60 works with I-Pods.

Yeah, my roommate has an older pair of Grados, and recently got a pair of SR60's. The sound quality for the price is amazing. I use Sony MDR-V700DJ's. Good, durable, closed-ear design, they will take any volume you give it, I've yet to hear em clip. Great for whenever I actually do dj (obviously).

Sony makes good headphones.... I had a pair of the MDR V7506's and liked them so much I just got a pair of MDR V900's... my station uses crappy $25 headphones and I can't stand it when I forget these at home and have to use theirs.

I got lucky and scored a pair of Grado SR325i on eBay for a stupid low price about a year back and am ridiculously happy with them.

They replaced a pair of SR80 that I had previously.

I've had a set of Etoymic ER-6i ear buds for awhile. They are pretty good and you can get them relatively cheap now. I've been wanting to purchase the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pros but I don't feel like dropping that much cash on a set of ear buds.

Okay, I'm now ready to drop some coin on a good set of IEMs. Any audiophiles in here? I'm looking at the following IEMs:

Etymotic ER-4P
Sennheiser IE7 - not sure if I want to go this high end
Westone 3 - these are my fav, but not sure if I want to spend this much
Westone UM2
Head-Direct RE0
Klipsch S4 - cheaper, but have heard great things
Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro

Does anyone have any experience with any of these products?

The only ones from that list I've used personally are the Etymotics (atually the 4S rather than 4P) and I was very happy with their sound.

It is also nice that you can pick them up for around half the original price these days.

You might also want to look at Sleek Audio's SA6 as they allow you to tune them to your individual taste.

what i have:

full-size

ultrasone 2500
alessandro ms2i (modded grado 325i)
sennheiser 580
akg 701
grado sr 80
beyerdynamic dt880

portable

etymotic er-4p
shure e3c
koss ksc75

as far as earphones are concerned, i highly recommend the er-4p. these are reference earphones, which i use primarily for classical music. they are clear and detailed. if you listen mostly to rock (bass-rich music), perhaps shures are the way to go. my e3c's are too muddled, though. go with e4c or better.

the best value by far are the koss earphones i listed. you can find them for about $20. you should modify them by taking cutting a hole (about the size of a penny) out of the foam pad. this makes the mid-range and treble more clear. these cheap earphones outclass bose, which are universally considered to be crap by true audiophiles. really... stay away from bose. the only reason that people think that bose produces good sound is because the company markets and advertises like no other. you can find much better sound for much less money.

if you're serious about sound, an amp (portable) is also recommended. you can find good portable amps produced by ray samuels, xin, meier, headamp, go-vibe, and others. music straight out of an ipod or other device is okay, but the internal amp will never rival an external amp. grado does a good job straight out of the source, but an upgrade by amp would be worth it.

Thanks for the responses. I've heard great things about the Etymotic ER-4P but my only concern is on the low end. Lows are almost non-existent on my ER-6i. I'm by no means a bass head, just want an improvement without sacrificing the mids/highs. I was sold on the UE's but have heard about some comfort issues with their design. I really want the Westone 3, but not sure if I can justify the cost.

Here's a great forum for audio:

I need to find a good pair for a small noggin. I like the Bose QC2's, but they are too big for me even on the smallest setting. I also have trouble wearing in-ear headphones because they always feel like they're going to fall out (and often do). Any suggestions? (And don't tell me none of you have a small head.)

Have you tried foam ear tips? Comply makes quality foam tips in different sizes. I have also found foam tips provide the best seal for sound.

Can anyone tell me how the Grado SR-60s would do in a somewhat noisy environment? Are these going to be a decent option for flights and walking around a busy city with an iPod, for instance, or are they pretty much designed for at-home audiophiles? How about the Sennheiser HD-555s? Any other recommendations for something that provides good sound, is portable (compatible with an iPod and isn't enormous), works in less-than-quiet environments, and does it all for under $100? Thanks for any advice, guys.
