Apple iPad, Android, other tablet displays

I never really thought of the whole Apple and Android portable operating systems as full blown computer OS's, but it looks to be the trend.

Mmm closed architecture completely controlled by the manufacturer.

Great for Apple...not so good for the consumer.

I posted this over in the verizon thread, but I like to pad my posts, so I will repost it here.

The interesting thing is what they are doing with the Android OS beyond the phone or netbook, people are utilizing it to control appliances, previews on printers, and inside ip phones. And this really is just a start, there's a lot of areas where you could utilize that display and menu system.

I think that's the part I am most interested in, I have a netbook because it was free when I got my pc, I have updated, broke and fixed it, it's a fun toy, I figure if tablets get popular they will be floating around in other such specials, aftermarket units for a few hundred dollars to the point where manufacturers are tossing them in free with a larger purchase.

But the idea of a simple menu system with display and fast, responsive, menu system on many regular household items really intrigues me.

Imagine household appliances equipped with WiFi. You could conceivably start your taters cooking by calling in from your Bluetooth phone when you leave the office, and have hot dinner waiting when you get home. Takes remote control to an entirely different place.

Second, this means virus's and exploits to android will start to come hard and heavy, yay :(

Yeah, that is one of the main reasons as to why I got rid of, and no longer want, a smartphone. Once I was browsing the Android market and already saw Anti-Virus apps I figured it was only a matter of time.

Apple Moves Forward with Tablet's Trademark-Infringing "iPad" Name, Reveals Potential Features in Filing - apple tablet - Gawker
The Jesus Tablet Blog recently uncovered documents deep within the US Patent Offices suggesting that the iPad was the Apple Tablet's name based on their battles against Fujitsu for it. Now they're moving ahead with a U.S. trademark battle.

So, to recap: Fujitsu trademarked iPad, and Apple filed to oppose the trademark back on September 1, 2009, literally, the first day Apple was even able to oppose Fujitsu's iPad name. Ryan noted that Apple's just been trying to kill time up until this point:

Apple lawyers haven't yet filed any specific complaints about Fujitsu's "iPAD" mark yet, they've just asked for time, and then more time, to put together arguments against the name. So it's entirely possible Apple just wants to preserve the option of naming its tablet the "iPad" up until launch, expected to come at a press event Jan. 27.
They paid off Cisco to steal the iphone name, why not do it again to create a confusingly similar name to the Mp3 devices?
The application covers hundreds of goods and services including: computers, books, games, and telecommunications. Interestingly, one service being applied for "enables users to program the scheduling of audio, video, text and other multimedia content, including music, concerts, videos, radio, television, news, sports, games, cultural events, and entertainment-related programs as they will be aired".
