Archie makes it to Hawai'i

Got to meet and chat with Archie one-on-one tonight at the local alumni membership dinner. What a world-class guy. He talks to you like you're a close friend, gladly poses for photos with anyone, and signs anything without hesitation. There's is no better representative of Ohio State. I got a couple pics with him and got one of my miniature helmets signed by him. It was a bit surprising how "non-imposing" in stature he is. He did mention that he and Mo Wells are about the general size, which always helps to have another Archie Griffin-type RB coming into the fold.

After his speech, he did a quick Q&A before leaving for his flight back. Some items of interest to us:

  • Tressel is in no danger of losing his job, and he said he feels Tressel will be around for a long time. The stuff brought up by ESPN is rehashed stuff from the previous year, and that one certain recent former RB was the cause.

  • He may have considered the AD job if he had been asked a few years back, but right now he feels he has the best job in the world and is not a candidate.

  • If Youngstown State does indeed move up into I-A, they definitely will be placed on OSU's schedule, although he has no knowledge of YSU being put on their 2008 docket (gee, guess who asked him that question).

  • He would've scheduled a home/away series with Hawaii had he been asked to a few years back when he was doing the scheduling.

  • He was asked about the current recruiting situation and if we had any more prospects lined up, and he said he could only say that we have 15 verbals right now and could not say anything more without violating NCAA rules. He also said that verbals mean nothing until LOIs are signed. I don't think he was hinting at anything like we've been following, but rather just reminding the audience that 15 verbals doesn't always mean 15 signed LOIs.

The only thing that pissed me off tonight was the fact the main Alumni Association flew him coach to Hawaii and back. That's right...they flew their President, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, and the university's biggest ambassador, in coach. How frickin' tacky is that? Not only that, but he was here for just under 24 hours, so how in the hell is he supposed to be rested for his scheduled speaking engagement tomorrow night back in Ohio? Total, unadulterated bullshit.

I got to meet Archie a couple of years ago at a United Way benefit at the Huntington Club in the Shoe. He really is the nicest person you will ever meet. He signed a jersey for me, put his arm around me and had my wife snap a pic. Then went about signing things for about 30 or 40 other people. He took his time with each one and talked to them like they were old friends. He spent the most time with the kids. Asking about how they were doing in school and listening to their football stories. It was quite moving to see in a world that most famous figures turn their noses up at their fans. He made his speech and Tress came in after practice. You could tell he had ran to make it there. JT gave his speech and then ran off to do his radio show. My wife grabbed a ball cap I brought along and caught him as he was entering the elevator. He asked if she needed an autograph, handed her his hotdog and signed the cap. She likes to tell the story about how she held JT's weiner while she got his sig. I guess I should be jealous but I figure that, hey, its Jim Tressel.

[I am not an OSU alum, but if I'd known about the airfare deal, I'd have chipped in the first class ticket myself]

I'm not an alum either, but got involved indirectly by attending their group game-watches for Cincinnati game (my cable company didn't have GamePlan for our opener). The officers of our local association were not happy when they found out about Archie flying coach. I guarantee you that if he ever makes it out this way again, the group will make sure he's in first class, even if we have to pay for it ourselves. The main Alumni Association should feel completely ashamed and embarrassed for making him fly coach.

The Man (Archie G.), came out here last year to one of our private home fund raisers sponsored by Orange County Alumni group. He is the genuine article. Mezmerized 80 of us with stories, then answered questions.

He autographed Buckeye Wife's "45" jersey and took pic. Now I can't touch, let alone wear her "45".

Archie is pure gold...and a super gentlemen.

To answer you question...

why are HAYNBUCKI and Natl Geo so interested in female scUM alumni ?!?!
We are going to be "deploying" critter cams on the backs of the humpbacks to get a real live look at what happens way down under the surface. Nat Geo will be making a documentary/movie on it. We will be trained and versed on how to "deploy" the critter cams.
