Arizona State 2009 Baseball

Tough to say, reag, I simply don't know. Maybe the sport was de-emphasized? Maybe the great in-state players decided AZ or FL was a better place to play? I know the current regime (well, the one right before this one anyway) saw fit to build a beautiful baseball-only stadium on campus, so maybe that's turning around.

I looked at tOSU's roster and it is heavily loaded with Ohio guys. I think I only saw 9 guys from out of state. I would imagine it is hard to recruit guys into Ohio from warmer states for baseball. Looking at the baseball rankings, almost all of the good teams come from warm weather states.

Where did tOSU play their games before this new stadium was built? That stadium looks nice. ASU's stadium is OLD!

The Buckeyes played in a crappy old "stadium" if you want to call it that before. It was more a glorified little-league field. Our "stadium" in my home town of Coldwater, Ohio was more impressive. It wasn't big-time, but I enjoyed many games there as a student.

Good Thread reagdog and others.

To address the point above - nothing changed in Ohio, kids just started heading the the minor leagues right out of school.

I think ties that bind teams with recent success is two-fold:

1. Their "average - not pro ready" talent is better than other teams.
or
2. They have one or two STUD players who totally dominate and carry their teams - Albert Belle at LSU and Mark Prior as S.Cal come to mind.

Why are the good Ohio kids going into the minors instead of college? I can understand if they get a big signing bonus, but most guys going into the minor leagues don't get much money. You would think a college education is worth more than what most signing bonuses would be worth. They can always hit up the minors after college.

Is baseball a big sport in Ohio? I know a ton of good football players come from Ohio, but I'm not familiar with their baseball talent.

#1 ASU Upset

TEMPE, Ariz. - Washington State defeated the top-ranked Arizona State University baseball team 10-4 on Sunday in front of a crowd of 2,513 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils fall to 25-8 overall, 10-2 in the Pac-10, on the season with the loss.
Seth Blair started and got a no decision, going 4.2 innings and allowing six hits and four unearned runs with six strikeouts. Mitchell Lambson took the loss out of the bullpen to drop to 5-2 despite allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth, when the Cougars scored four unearned runs to take their first lead of the series up to that point. Drew Maggi had a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the ASU deficit in half, and then Abe Ruiz came up with a pinch-hit two-run double in the sixth to tie the game.
However, Washington State designated hitter Michael Weber hit a solo home run off Lambson in the eighth to put his team back on top, and the Cougars would score five more unearned runs in the ninth off Lambson and Jordan Swagerty.
The Sun Devils return to Pac-10 action next Friday, when they host Stanford, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium in Brock Ballpark.
