Associate HC/DL Coach Larry Johnson Sr. (Official Thread)

This is Ohio State right?

Shouldn’t be batting a what 20% clip (if Houston stays) between two cycles on edge rushers you want.

no one else is concerned with the total lack of DE recruiting for two straight years? Again, if we lose JTT and Jack I’m not sure anyone’s really grasping what that leaves us with. Then considering we don’t seem too active at the position in the portal and we have 3 defensive ends total.
That's not what you said though. You said Hartline doesn't have the "I don't control the NIL" excuse. Which is true, because Hartline is literally the best WR coach in the nation, so he doesn't have to. So that's the bar? Even Bama doesn't have that at every position. It's an unrealistic expectation. LJ needs to do better, but you can't just say "Well the best __ coach can do it, why can't everyone?"

It's becoming pretty clear....

The days of "It's not about the money now, its the NFL, its competing against the best, and they just want to be Buckeyes" will only work for those in Ohio or a surrounding state. This worked well in Tressels era.

In the NIL era, if you want to compete for National Titles (which is one of our stated goals) then you're going to have to start dropping bags of cash, either in recruiting and/or the portal. None of us know the situations all these kids are in, if you're putting large numbers in front of a kid, his family, his HS coach, etc and they say no, they probably are already well off (all other things being equal).

now are we in trouble in the '24 season, probably not unless 2 or more of the DL leaves for the NFL. The talent behind him hasn't been enough so far to crack the minimal rotation we have .... Not having talent in the trenches is one of the quickest ways towards becoming the a mediocre team. If Hartline and Day continue to get WRs & QBs it will be covered over some of the problems.

I dont like where this is headed because the NCAA & Congress aint riding to the rescue and putting guardrails on NIL (this is what Smith & Day seem to be hoping for)... Hopefully the next AD will just say "Fuck it, no real rules, hey all you donors, give to NIL we need them to compete" ...

We don’t have that problem at corner or safety or linebacker or running back or tight end either. It’s the D Line. It’s a little the o line, but at least there they are finding some 4 stars that they like.
LJ has an old school recruiting strategy where he kills at the in home and the on campus visits, but he lacks in the constant contact and keeping people pumped up between visits.

looks like we’re likely to lose Houston at the last second so yeah we have swung and missed two straight cycles with no help in sight.

I’m not saying you land all of them but is it too much to ask to get 2 out of 5??

Yes this is all I’m saying as well.

You don’t have to dominate and get everyone so I suppose yes you’re right I don’t expect Brian Hartline.

My overall point was this isn’t an issue for the other assistants overall. So we shouldn’t be striking out two years in a row. We couldn’t afford to swing and miss and it appears we will.

I don’t think we have to drop bags but we need to be more in the ball park certainly.

Larry Johnson is:

71 years old and relentlessly negatively recruited against for being about to retire.

A complete bust on the recruiting trail for the second straight year (x1,000 if Houston flips).

Failing to develop talent, which leads directly into…

Failing to produce results on the field and failing to get guys drafted.

Actively fighting against the defensive coordinator’s scheme because he insists on four down linemen at all times.

And everything is feeding into the other relentlessly.

The good thing about completely whiffing on your second straight recruiting class is there is absolutely no reason to keep him around.

Day needs to get rid of Johnson, and there is no better time than now.

(The absolute only reason to potentially keep him around is the influence it might have on Sawyer and JT returning. But I say let whatever happens, happen. Get a young dynamic coach who won’t actively fight against the DC and hit the transfer portal hard with the new guy because, guess what? LJ Sr. also sucks ass at navigating the transfer portal effectively.)

Yeah sad but true… love LJ but the cupboard is about to be bare because of his recruiting.

Not LJ's fault that Scott flipped 2 days before signing day. In addition, no one knows what's going on with the TP. Time for some to get their panties un-twisted and get out of the fantasy world they live in.

No coach was keeping Scott from taking the bag, i'll give him that. Bigger problem though is that he seems to have lost his touch with developing players, the recruits he has gotten the last 3 or so years we've seen not much development out of. JTT and Sawyer in particular have been wildly underwhelming. They aren't terrible by any means but LJsr seems to have failed to get close to tapping into their full potential
