OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK
Banged-up Buckeye eager to play

Friday, January 05, 2007Jodie Valade and Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporters
Scottsdale, Ariz.- Ohio State cornerback Antonio Smith said nothing will keep him out of Monday's BCS National Championship game against Florida. Not illness, not rain, not sleet, not snow. And certainly not a sore shoulder that he banged in practice back in Columbus.

FLORIDA NOTEBOOK
Meyer hopes to inspire team with talk of past title

Plain Dealer Reporter
Scottsdale, Ariz.- Whenever possible, Urban Meyer likes to remind his Florida team of a group that played in Gainesville, Fla.,10 years ago - not necessarily to draw any similarities to the 1996 national champion Florida team, but to show this current collection the possibilities.

Ohio State seeking traps for Florida's trick offense

Friday, January 05, 2007 Jodie Valade

Plain Dealer Reporter
Scottsdale, Ariz.- In hours upon hours of dissecting every step of the Florida offense, Ohio State has learned plenty. The Buckeyes know that the Gators rely on a backup quarterback to rush the ball. They know there is an extremely fast group of receivers who catch plenty of passes, and that there is a freshman do-everything receiver who gains yards everywhere.

OSU's defense cut out for ferocity

After losing nine starters last season, coordinator adds new blood
Friday, January 05, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Scottsdale, Ariz. -- His whistle whipping over his shoulder on the cord around his neck, Jim Heacock bent his knees, leaned forward and drove his hands into the scout team's offensive lineman. That scene played out during Ohio State's practice at Pinnacle High School on Wednesday, and for the Ohio State defensive lineman it was familiar. And sometimes it's bloodier.

Pitcock's granny steals the show
Friday, January 5, 2007
By TODD PORTER

When Kitty Church's phone rang Thursday morning, she could hardly believe the voice on the other end.
"Grandma ... I'm next door, and I have a few minutes," the voice said.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. The chip that was on Troy Smith's shoulder when the season began is still there. It is evident in the way he glares at the media at times and in conversations with reporters.

OSU NOTES
Friday, January 5, 2007

Thursday's practice Wednesday's practice was the first in which Ohio State started implementing the plays the Buckeyes plan to use Monday. Thursday was more intense. Today will be more of the same. On Saturday and Sunday, expect Ohio State to add polish with light workouts.

Pittman not worried about job security
Friday, January 5, 2007
By TODD PORTER

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. One of these days, Antonio Pittman is going to feel appreciated. Ohio State's junior running back has strung together back-to-back seasons of more than 1,000 rushing yards, the first Buckeye to do so since Eddie George in 1994-95.

OSU defense delivers; Buckeyes' offense gets plenty of help

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

GLENDALE, Ariz. - When they pass out the kudos at this grandiose production called the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game, they'll of course thank the gaggle of deep-pocketed sponsors, and a bunch of guys in suits who you have never heard of that represent those companies.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State safety Brandon Mitchell would be one of those guys who would get a pat on the back from the boss for thinking outside the box if he were in the business world.
One of the questions that always arises when a Big Ten football team plays a Southeastern Conference team is if the Big Ten team can handle the speed connected with SEC teams.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Maybe there are Ohio State football players with grandmothers who know as much about football as Quinn Pitcock?s grandma, Kitty Church.
But there probably aren?t any with grandmothers who know more about the game.

Buckeyes say practices were far from a break
BY JIM NAVEAU - Jan. 5, 2007

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Ohio State?s players who have met the media this week have unanimously dismissed the notion that a 51-day layoff between the Michigan game and Monday night?s BCS championship game could be a problem.
Defensive tackle David Patterson said on Thursday that 51 days is not a big deal.
?We always go hundreds of days without playing and we come out the first game and are all right. This is a shorter layoff than that and we?ve been practicing hard for a month,? he said.

OSU, Florida not exactly strangers
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- Neither defense will be able to pull any surprises during the national championship game on Monday. All of the secrets have already been shared with the opponent.

Coaching staffs meet with other staffs every spring to discuss ideas and strategies. It just so happened that last spring, the defensive staffs for both Florida and Ohio State got together to exchange ideas.
