Zimmer to be seen and heard

Mike Zimmer, off a typical animated outing in the rookie camp, gets to yell at the Bengals veterans for the first time on the field Tuesday. While their new defensive coordinator admits, "A lot of these players aren't going to like me," he is also committed to restoring the unit's reputation.
"I think we have good guys. Good people. I think they're tired of people just beating the hell out of them, from what I can tell," Zimmer said Monday, taking a break from preparing for the first voluntary session. "If we can overcome some of that outside deal and we stick together and believe in what we're doing, I think they can overcome

Backs and backers

Running back Chris Perry was on the field for the first time in May since his rookie year and he was a sight for quarterback Carson Palmer's sore eyes.
Even though Perry's dislocated ankle has kept him out of a game since November of 2006, Palmer said Perry looked like he did when he showed up at training camp for the first time with a rookie's quick feet in 2004 and reminds him of Pro Bowlers LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson catching the ball out of the backfield

Backs to the future?

Chris Perry came off his stool and Rudi Johnson bounced off the ropes Tuesday like boxers answering a bell for the 15th and final round when the Bengals opened their voluntary camp sessions.
With Perry finally overcoming an onslaught of injuries to appear on the field in May for the first time since his rookie year, Johnson checked in at a fighting weight of about 225 pounds in the revamped Bengals backfield. Or about 10-15 more pounds than last season

Backers on the move

Odell Thurman and Keith Rivers weren't even here Tuesday and the linebackers still made news.

Ahmad Brooks, who can't remember playing anything other than middle linebacker in his life, moved to the outside. Dhani Jones, who remembers playing in the middle only in a pinch, got pinched to middle linebacker in the ripple effects of putting Rivers at the WILL linebacker after taking him with the ninth pick in the draft.
Jones started the final eight games of last season at WILL, one of the two outside spots that switches off and on over the tight end. He also had a start at SAM, the other outside spot

Kenny Irons stopped by the Under Armour camp @ Cinci to talk to the kids. Said he lost 20 lbs since the surgery/etc. Looks like a DB.

Sounds like they were looking for a reason to cut him - absent from Voluntary workouts because of his Grandmother's funeral.

Oh well, one of the leagues worst Defensive squads just got thinner at a critical spot.

[sarcasm]Thank god they took all those wide-outs in the Draft[/sarcasm]

I think the reason is that he said he was going to the funeral, which was last monday, and then would be back tuesday or Weds. As of today he still was not back, and no one from the team has been able to get ahold of him. They ended up having to tell his agent they were cutting him. He was suspended for two tears, he knew what he had to do to make this team. Yes it sucks his grandmother died, but he should have made some effort to let them know what was going on, and should have been around by the end of last week. Instead he decided not to come in, and not to tell the team what was going on. Good Bye!

It'll be more interesting to see if he files a complaint and the players' union gets involved. You can't exactly cut somebody for not showing up to voluntary workouts.

I was hoping for some sort of production out of him this year, but oh well. I'll trust ML on this one.

Regardless of what Odell did, I don't care because we need him. We are already piss poor on defense, especially at LB. We are an injury or two away from being almost completely depleted at LB. I know it was likely more than just missing a funeral but still, it's a serious depth liability right now. Beyond that, couldn't we at least try to trade him? I hate to say it but I am not looking forward to watching our D get pummeled even worse this year...if that's possible.

Edit: This was a knee-jerk post...but I just hate to see our defense get even worse. I know the real problem is Odell but it doesn't change the fact that we were already thin at LB before we let Odell go.

his agent was on the radio after he got waived and said they would NOT be filing a grievance with the league.

that tells me there may be more to why the Bengals waived him.

Bengals put exiled LB Thurman, busted 2005 draft behind them - NFL - CBSSports.com

CINCINNATI -- It's almost as though Odell Thurman was never here.

Two days after the Cincinnati Bengals released the troubled linebacker, coach Marvin Lewis refused to talk about him in any detail. Thurman's former teammates expressed sadness.

That's about it.

The organization publicly and steadfastly supported Thurman while he went through treatment for alcohol abuse and served a two-year suspension from the NFL. When it concluded that the former second-round pick wasn't working hard enough to regain a spot on the team, it made him past tense.

Contd...

We have 10 LB's on the Roster right now, The Starters will be Jones, Rivers, and Brooks. We signed two linebackers in free agency that are teh same age as Thurman, but without the sitting out of two NFL seasons. We will be fine at linebacker, it is still the D-Line that might have questions with it, although if Sims and Shirly work out, it will be better than last year.

Thurman didn't want to come on a earn his spot, Lewis has said from day one that he was not counting on Thurman to be poart of the team. He obviously had some other issues. If he doesn't want to do the work now, then who says he is going to want to do the job later.
