Couldn't find any articles... it was a rumor posted in the mill by LordJeffBuck that I've decided I'm running with. :tongue2:

Rumor Mill thread: The "Unrelated Legal Issue"

I could have swore that I saw this floated by a beat reporter on Twitter at some point too. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.

Even if I'm full of [Mark May] and Missouri didn't make such a request of Ohio State, the desperation and petulance they showed in that round of expansion leading up to Nebraska's invitation was unbecoming of a Big Ten institution in my IMO.

Here's an article tracing the timelines, along with confusing comments from tOSU spokespersons about the topic.

Sportsbybrooks

An apparent FOIA request about FOIA requests indicated that tOSU's first FOIA request of 2011 came on Jan. 24th, and some media members thought that showed that tOSU was not being accurate/forthcoming. But the person that logs the incoming FOIA requests said that many requests went straight to the athletic department and weren't logged. But it appears that tOSU has been intentionally vague about the FOIA request being an "unrelated legal issue".

tOSU found the emails on January 13th, and first interviewed JT about them on January 16th. In the 3-8-11 news conference (one day after the Yahoo story came out), Smith apparently says that he informed Delany on Feb 2nd and the NCAA on Feb 3rd. He says that he notified Delany, and informed the NCAA the next day, and later said that on Feb 3rd he asked the NCAA to participate in the investigation, so if both comments about the NCAA contact were on the same day, that was on Feb 3rd.

FWIW Folantor (Ohio State fan) posted on GBW (TSUN Scout board) that he found the following on a Wisconsin board (no idea which one), it appears to be from a UNC fan on Inside Carolina (UNC Scout board).

Get all that?

Just got my first bit of "inside" information on this subject. According to my source, someone in the admin at Wisconsin stated there will be a presser next week and Carolina and Ga. Tech will be joining the BIG, as they have accepted the offers. I live in WI, and the source is someone in my soon-to-be family, so I trust this information.

I linked the original post on the Carolina board in my post above. It's on their open board in a thread titled "Conference realignment: Can ACC take schools for their word?".

Ahh the joys of the internet age, trying to track shit back to the original source.

Just found it interesting as it's the first time I've seen UNC & GT paired up. Most of the rumors have UVA with one or the other.

that's why I don't believe it, UVA will be #15 IMO, 16 is up for grabs UNC if the joing, Ga Tech if UNC passes

What I learned from reading about a week's worth of posts from the Shag's realignment thread:

-The WV folks are super into expansion because they don't want to on their own little island away from everyone else in the Big 12.

-North Carolina cares about no one but itself. Duke isn't as connected to NC as much as people think.

-SEC seems prepared to take Duke if it helps them get NC.

-Lots of talk about Florida State. Florida State would jump to the B1G immediately if offered. FSU is concerned that the Big 12 only has eyes for it and Clemson and no one else on the northern seaboard, thus it doesn't want to feel disconnected with the rest of the conference. Potential B1G expansion down the northern seaboard is seen as a big plus for FSU potentially joining, as most of its alumni live in that area.

-If Virginia left the conference, it wouldn't necessarily affect North Carolina's decision to leave the conference. Florida State would, being the only football blue blood in the conference.

-B1G will be the next to make a move. SEC says they're happy at 14, PAC isn't looking, Big 12 says they're content at 10 right now, ACC is preparing its anus, and the Big East's members want to be anywhere else but where they are. With that said, BCS expansion news is on hiatus until Maryland finds out what it has to pay to leave the conference. Gotta think that if/when the exit fee is significantly lower than $50 million, the SEC and Big 12 will no longer be happy at their current numbers.

-Notre Dame wants absolutely nothing to do with the B1G. If there were 4 super conferences, we would be the last one they would join, even if they had the world to gain by being in the B1G. They see themselves as a national team and they're afraid if they join the B1G, they will no longer be a national team. Just another Midwestern school (this just in... they're just a Midwestern school).

-Lots of talk about Virginia and Georgia Tech in connection with the B1G, but nothing that we haven't already heard.

Oops forgot to add:

Conversely Iowa St & Baylor fans are the most adamant about how strong the BXII is & that there's nothing to worry about long term

I see you've been reading it as well

I post as Scarlet_Lutefisk over there.

The expansion thread is really the primary thing I pay attention to on Shaggy, it's an excellent aggregator for links on the topic. You just have to ignore the local spin that being the smallest conference both in 'brands' but also in viewers is actually a good thing long term because Baylor & Kansas St have had a couple of good seasons.

Also forgot to mention ORD also had a GPA-worthy performance on the Shag that got under a particular domers' skin.
Joe has me on ignore over on Huskerboard. He's the very model of the self absorbed domer.

Duke regards the SEC in much the same way they regard a Family Dollar gift card.

So no, they ain't goin' SEC.

I agree with your take on Duke's view of the SEC, but at some point it may be there only real option. If the BIG takes some combo of UNC/UVA/GT, and the Big12 takes a few of the leftovers (FSU/Clemson), then the only two things left are the SEC and whatever conference is left from the leftovers of the Big East and ACC.

The SEC isn't going to settle for leftovers like Dook. If they feel the need to move, they'll be going after bigger fish.
