You can't, with 100% certainty. But all things considered, I'd rather have 5-star prospects because they are the most likely to succeed in college.

Recruiting rankings really do matter. If it were easy to win with 3-star prospects, then Iowa would be Alabama.

You should be far less worried about star rankings with QB, OL, and DL, because years of "coaching up" is factored in with those positions. You can afford to take a risk on an OL, for example, when you know going in that his career path is going to be redshirt, two years as a back up, two years as a starter.


Ohio State brought in six RBs for official visits: Kendall Milton, Bijan Robinson, Jaylan Knighton, Sam Adams II, DeaMonte Trayanum, and Blake Corum. These are the six RBs that the staff wanted and thought they had a reasonable chance to land. That is their list, not mine.

All six of the aforementioned RBs have committed elsewhere. So now the staff is on Plan G. Do I trust the coaching staff? Generally speaking, yes. Do I trust the coaching staff to find a kid with "big time offers" and "legit skills that fit our system" as a Plan G recruit? No, I do not.

I respect your opinion, but you have a history of being pessimistic about our misses; it stands out in the signing day recaps. I remember how down you were about having to settle for Thayer Munford after we missed on higher rated recruits. The only class I can recall where the misses genuinely hurt us was in '07 when we lost studs like Anthony Davis, Barksdale, Major Wright, and Gronkowski. A lot of our misses don't amount to much.

I don't think this class' success will hinge on either of the RB's we lost. It stings our pride more than anything. We've already got a blue chip QB, the top WR class in school history on paper, and a deep OL class led by potentially the best OT prospect in the country. Even if we don't find a back as good as Robinson, we'll be just fine on offense.

It's inconsistent to get excited about top ranked classes and then downplay the loss of bijan.

it's also completely accurate to say that having a superstar tailback is not a requirement to win the title. You can do extremely well with a good rb. Reasonable minds can disagree about whether or not OSU has secured that if they don't replace this with loss somebody quite good.

You cannot win the national title in this current college football climate with a 3* / low 4* quarterback (who plays at that level). If Fields is special, they can run the table, even if JK is just fairly good. The opposite does not work.

That's where I'm at. Hate losing Robinson and Knighton. But it's at a position where it's easier to recover. With Miller on board and our WR, TE, and OL class...we will get a good RB and be just fine, even after being teased by a class of Robinson and Knighton.

To me the RB position is obviously important, BUT it is a position where we can get a guy next year or even the year after that walks in and plays immediately, a la JK Dobbins. We can get a 5* next year or the year after and not miss a beat. Sucks to miss on guys like Bijan, but we can recover at the RB position easier than most other positions.

I think the all the angst has to do with Alford not being particularly good at this part. Dude hasn't signed a single 5* yet. There's no reason to think that will change next year.

Considering OSU hasn’t gotten a 5* since 2006, the “angst” seems misplaced. Using that to measure recruiting prowess doesn’t seem wise.

Yeap. There's something to be said for scouting over rankings too... but we dont have a lot to go on yet. Dobbins is the only starter Alford picked so far.
