Bitching about the 2004 Season

No pass rush. Which leads to the opponent effectively running the ball due to their ability to spread our defense which also opens their playbook. The injury to Dustin Fox also doesn't help the situation.

Those are just my observations.

Ediit: We also need a new defensive coordinator.

Defense?

They don't seem to get any rush, yeah, but they aren't pulling the defense up to the line as they have in previous years and they seem to be playing off the receivers, soft coverages in zone and man. No corners like we've had in the past or a killer of a safety.

They don't seem to be as fast as they were in the first three weeks, which says to me they're tired from being on the field so much.

I am not concerned at all about the defense. We only lose Fox and Fraser (not exactly first day draft picks) and everyone else returns. Plus Snyder will have his feet wet by then and will know what his men can and cant do.

However, i do agree with getting rid of bollman. and even having jimmy t drop the play calling duties. our offense has never been great since he got here 4 yrs ago. we got talent but it doesnt show.

Fact is...

The game is still won (or lost) at the line of scrimmage, and neither line (offensive or defensive) is doing much for the bucks. The D-ends, Fraser in particular, have been disappointing so far, and the tackles aren't getting much of a push up the middle. That said, I still like the back 7 and think that as the D-line progresses (IF they progress) you'll start to see more of the attacking, stifling, snot bubble bursting defense that O-state fans have grown accustomed to.

Hey- Rugby-

Stop handing out Paint Chips to the Newbies... Dude they cant' handle it.

I read this thread and from what I can tell, we're starting the Independence High Defense this year.

So, no Paint chips for the Rooks, I don't want to be giving them Adrenaline shots to the Heart at 3am tonight.

Leadership

There are many things that go wrong on a team when things get as bad as things have gotten on this team.

For example the Defense looks bad because the offensive can't control the ball which wears out the defense allowing the opponets to score, then the offense has to throw the ball which hurt their ability to call a balanced offense in a rush to catch up, which get the offense off the field more quickly, and therefore tires out the defense more. This type of stuff just snow balls. The same thing could be said about confidence, attitude, selfishness, poping off...

The one thing that keeps these types of things from happening in life, and in sports is Leadership. That is it.

Lets look at our leaders:

A kicker. I am sure he is a nice guy, and certainly is a great kicker, but he is a kicker and, I would think atleast, does not command the same type of respect that a position player would

A suspended RB. Not only a huge disappointment as far as how tallented and productive he is, but now he has let his teammates down by getting suspended

A quite Defensive End. Once again from all accounts I have seen or read he is a very nice, but softspoken type of player. A leader by example you might say, but not an enforcer. Not a vocal leader. He also has played poorly, which when you lead by example, it can be a killer.

An injured Cornerback. You all know my feelings about Dustin Fox the cornerback, but Dustin Fox the captain seems to be the closest thing we have to a true senior leader on this team. When you are hurt it is hard to have the same impact on your teammates in practice, on the playing field, probably even in the weight room, or film room.

People continue to be disappointed with this team falling short of it's potential. Sure some of it is likely coaching, and some may be youth, (although I believe it is a hollow excuse), but when this many things go wrong I question the leadership.

Think about the type leaders we lost the last few years.

Krenzel
Hartsock
W. Smith
Doss
Peterson
Steponovich
Nickey
Anderson
Wilhelm
Scott
Jenkins

Sure they were great players, but many of those players were known to be great leaders as well. I remember that before the 2003 season came up we had a hard time coming up with a good concensus on who the captains should be. This year I had a hard time coming up with any names at all.

We had a defense that big speaches didn't need to be made, each player looked around at one another and knew what had to be done, and they did their job because they knew the other players would do there's. We don't see this on this defense. This comes back to leadership.

We had an offense that although it wasn't great gave good effort, played smart, and hard every play for one another. That was because of leadership.

Coaches can be leaders, but we lost some coaches that I think had a lot of respect with the players in Dantonio, Conley, and Spencer.

IMHO the reason things have not gone well this season can be traced back to Leadership more than anything else. Although I am very frustrated with other problems that are also apparent, Leadership should overcome.

So why do I bring this up after a Win vs. Indiana? Because this must be the turning point in the season or we don't beat scUM or go to a Bowl game period.

This game with Penn State is the biggest game of the season coming up this week. It is the weak where we will see if players stop pressing trying to do too much themselves. It is the game where we see if indivdual acts of leadership become hopefully a level of trust between players.

We don't need more leaders, we need good leaders! We need players as solid as rocks that all of the players will get behind, respect and play with intensity and control around.

This is the Senior's team now. This is the class that many believe started the turn around after two Outback disappointments. Now there goal must be to do everything they can to make sure we do no worse than the Outback bowl.

It is time to get in line behind the leaders. It is time to live up to be the kind of player worthy of wearing that scarlet and gray uniform.

It is time for the leaders to lead, and the players to play.

Sorry this is longwinded, and kind of spuratic but hopefully you all get the idea and will add to it.

What I am saying is that there is a difference between being young and having strong leaders, and being young without leaders.

The 2002 team was young, but had good Senior leadership.

the 1968 team was young, but had good leadership, (if from nowhere else than Woody Hayes)

Miami (fl) is young, but they have leaders that have the respect of the youngers players, and show them what it takes to win, and to live up to the tradition.

You can say the same thing about USC, Michigan, and Oklahoma. For some reason it is not being done here at Ohio State.

But where the youth lies is a key...

Right now, the youth of tOSU is in crucial areas...OL/DL, QB, WR.

I agree that the leadership is not as strong as it has been, but I cannot consider it to be a major factor in this season. Everyone loves to use scUM as an example since they have Hart and Henne starting. That is great, but it is also a great example of how much of a chain reaction experienced players can cause. Henne is throwing to the best and most experienced WRs in the conference and possibly the nation. Hart is running behind a solid, veteran O-line. That makes life in the transition lane so much easier.

tOSU's WRs have run consistently sloppy routes and dropped a number of balls while the O-line woes have already been discussed at length. Put Henne or Hart in that situation...would they be as successful as they have been?

IMO, tOSU could not reload this year. Close games and complacency have hindered the development of these young players. This is a rebuilding year in the most important areas of the game...
