Blue Jackets Sign 19 year old Defenseman

Blue Jackets Xtra : Cancer patient's 1-day pact with Jackets priceless
The Blue Jackets have added a gritty 19-year-old defenseman to their roster for the playoff push.

The fact that Ryan Salmons won't play a game for the
club is immaterial in the eyes
of general manager Scott
Howson and the Blue Jackets Foundation.
Yesterday afternoon, Howson, along with Salmons' favorite players, Manny Malhotra and Jason Chimera, surprised the terminally ill teenager with a visit to his family's Grove City home.
They extended an unprecedented offer to the former hockey player: a one-day contract complete with a $3 signing bonus.
"It's pretty neat," Salmons said. "The curtain window (in the living room) was open and I saw Manny and Jason coming to the door. It really caught me off guard. But what really surprised me was to see Scotty (Howson). He presented me with the contract. It's really amazing."
...
The Hilliard Davidson graduate had become a role model and advocate in the pediatric cancer unit, taking time to explain to parents of young patients how the treatments and disease make them feel. Salmons came home from the hospital Monday, though. He is now in hospice care, his father said.
...

this kid spent his time at childrens (while he was in the hospital with his own fight) explaining emotions, talking to kids, helping people as he fought for his life. very nice gesture imo from the bugs.

Great story.

He also would like to go over the fine print in his contract.
"I read it over," he said, chuckling. "And I don't see anything about a base salary for the 2008-09 season."

:slappy:

First Dan Potokar, now this young man. Must be something in the Grove City water.

Ryan Salmons update (Puck-rakers)
Ryan Salmons update

The Blue Jackets season is at an end, but the franchise's commitment to terminally-ill teenager Ryan Salmons continues.
Yesterday, general manager Scott Howson, players Jason Chimera and Manny Malhotra and Blue Jackets Foundation executive director Wendy Bradshaw, again visited the family's Grove City home.
Ryan is in bad shape, folks. His father Brad said Ryan is now saying, "I know my time is short." The 19-year-old has been on round-the-clock oxygen since the family returned from the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., on Friday. Ryan has lots of pain in his abdomen, Brad said.
The family remains amazed by the attention the Blue Jackets and the NHL have given them. After Game 3, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock spotted Ryan in the hallway outside of the Jackets locker room and stopped to chat for several minutes.
"We did not engage him," Brad Salmons said. "He engaged us. He couldn't have been nicer. He told us how the Wings have two kids with pediatric cancer at each of their home games."
Brad still cannot get over how much interest Howson has taken in his son. Several weeks ago, Howson signed Ryan, a former hockey player, to a 1-day contract and, as as added incentive, supplied two tickets to the Jackets first home playoff game.
"They have been unbelievable through all of this," Brad Salmons said. "Scott is a busy man and I don't know how he finds the time."

Remembering No. 3 (Puck-rakers)
Remembering No. 3

The funeral for Ryan Michael Salmons was held today at Cypress Wesleyan Church in Hilliard. There is no better way to express how many lives young Ryan touched that this -- more chairs were brought in to accommodate the crowd.
Blue Jackets officials pegged the crowd at more than 700 people.
Jason Chimera and Manny Malhotra played on the same line once again, this time as pall bearers with a bunch of Ryan's friends and former hockey teammates from Hilliard. The club was well represented at the funeral and the cemetery.
I'm told it was a sweet, touching and meaningful ceremony, a fitting tribute to a life that ended way too soon.
After the funeral, a reception was held in Nationwide Arena. The ice surface was covered and surrounded by about 40 tables. In the middle of it all was an ice sculpture of a Blue Jackets sweater ... No. 3, with Salmons on the back.
The display board that wraps around the bowl was covered with "#3 Ryan Salmons", while a collection of pictures looped on the main scoreboard.
As one person said: "He would have thought this was cool."
Last year, a large crowd gathered in Nationwide Arena on May 7, 2009, to say a public goodbye to majority owner John H. McConnell, who died at 84 after a long battle with cancer. Nearly a year to the day, another large group suited up to say their goodbyes to a 19-year old who died of the same disease.
Damn you, cancer.
The Salmons family has asked that, instead of flowers, donations be made to the Blue Jackets Foundation in the name of Ryan Salmons at www.bluejacketsfoundation.org href="http://">http://
There's also an online guestbook to share thoughts and messages with his family at www.spencemillerfuneralhome.com
