From Wikipedia:

At Hayes' funeral on March 17, 1987, former President Richard Nixon delivered the eulogy before a crowd of 1,400, acknowledging the friendship that had begun during his second term as Vice President. Having met Hayes at a reception following a Buckeye win over Iowa in 1957, Nixon recalled, "I wanted to talk about football and Woody wanted to talk about foreign policy. And you know Woody. We talked about foreign policy." The following day, more than 15,000 people took part in a memorial service at Ohio Stadium.

Woody quotes:

"You can never really pay back. You can only pay forward."
"A guy from Ohio can make it in life if he works hard enough."
"You win with people."
"Paralyze resistance with persistence."
"There are three things that can happen when you throw a pass, and two of them are bad." This quote is often attributed to Hayes, but some contend General Robert Neyland of the University of Tennessee or Darrell Royal of the University of Texas was the source. Darrell Royal gives the credit to Woody Hayes as being the source of the quote.[1]
"I never saw a football player make a tackle with a smile on his face."
"Discipline is 95 percent anticipation."
"Without winners, there wouldn't even be any god damned civilization."
"Football represents and embodies everything that's great about this country, because the United States of America is built on winners, not losers or people who didn't bother to play."
"One thing you cannot afford ever to do is to feel sorry for yourself."
"There was no one who had better people than I did, or better football players. And, we outworked the other teams."
"The only way we'd get beaten was if we got a little fat-headed, if we didn't train right, if we had dissension on the squad."
"So many times I've found people smarter than I was ... But you know what they couldn't do? They couldn't outwork me. They couldn't outwork me!"
"You can outwork anybody. Try it, you will find out that you can do it."
"Anything easy ain't worth a damn!"
When asked why he went for two despite a 34-point lead against Michigan, Hayes quipped, "Because I couldn't go for three."
"If you can't beat 'em on the field, then beat 'em on the sidelines. If you can't beat 'em on the sidelines then beat the first person you see on the sidelines."

My favorite image is Woody standing on the sidelines smiling with glee with the game won shouting across the field at Schembechler, who had published a book that year, "I read your goddam book!"

Regarding the 69 upset:

Schembechler recalled what Hayes told him at a banquet held in Hayes honor after he had retired.

"He looked down at the podium at me and said, 'Damn you, you will never win a bigger game than that.' And he was right. I don't think I ever did."

After the game, Hayes said: "We got outplayed and out-coached."

Schembechler recalled a moment in the 1971 game against Ohio State when Woody looked at the scoreboard and realized he was about to lose, then went off with one of his classic megatons. He was screaming at officials, sideline camera men, anybody. Bo said as the whole thing went on, it became a surreal scene as the sun went behind clouds, the sky got dark, it started raining, and fog began to roll in ... all as Woody went on with his tantrum. When Woody finally stopped, he looked up at Bo, and Bo recalled that Woody's glasses were completely fogged over and he couldn't even see across the field.

That's when Schembechler realized what Woody was doing, and he screamed over to the Ohio State bench, "God damn you Woody, you're already setting up your team for next years game!!!"

OSU won the following year.

Bo Schembechler on Woody Hayes
I played for Woody, I coached for him, I patterned my life after him, and I consider him a great friend of mine.
Woody Hayes on Bo Schembechler
I didn't like the son of a bitch when he played for me, I didn't like him when he worked for me, and I certainly don't like him now.

Great respect between the two. Don't quite believe that Woody didn't like Bo.......during one of Woody's tirades in the locker room, he threw a chair at Bo. Bo picked it up and threw it back at Woody. Woody said, "Then is when I knew that he was going to be a head coach."

Also, when Woody passed away, Bo cancelled practice that day, and left the field in tears. That was a grand tribute to his mentor.

They were great friends, great competitors, and great coaches. Both gave college football much to remember.

:gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger: I shudder at the 'Win One for the Bo" (Gipper) speech that llloyd will say coming out of the locker room.
