Report: Yastrzemski to undergo heart bypass surgery

BOSTON -- Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, was hospitalized for tests Tuesday after experiencing chest pains.
The Boston Red Sox confirmed the 68-year-old Yastrzemski was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital and was undergoing evaluation and testing. The team said no further information was immediately available on its longtime great.
The Boston Globe, citing an unnamed source, reported that Yastrzemski will have to undergo heart bypass surgery to fix a blockage in one of his main arteries.
Asked whether it was serious, Yastrzemski spokesman Dick Gordon said: "Any time you are in the hospital, it's got to be pretty serious."

Well the pitching was absolutely dreadful last night, for anyone that didn't see. I'd have to say the highlight of attending the game was some guy walking up to me saying "O-H!!!", in which I replied with "I-O!!!" lol. Awesome seats and awesome weather for a game, too bad the Sox couldn't pull it out.

Beckett won't pitch until symptom-free | redsox.com: News
Beckett won't pitch until symptom-free

BALTIMORE -- Though Terry Francona has Josh Beckett slated to pitch on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox's manager made it clear that things could change if Beckett isn't symptom-free by then.

The right-hander has been dealing with numbness in the pinkie and ring finger of his right hand and was originally supposed to pitch on Saturday in Toronto.

"We're not going to pitch him until he's symptom-free," said Francona. "We wouldn't do that. "That's kind of where we're at. We're not hiding an aneurysm or a ... clot."

Beckett throws on side, will start Friday vs. White Sox

Josh Beckett's side throwing session at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday convinced Red Sox manager Terry Francona that his ace is ready to return to the rotation.

Beckett was held out of his scheduled start against the Yankees, and an earlier scheduled start against the Blue Jays, after experiencing tingling in the fingers of his right throwing arm during his last start. In that outing, on Aug. 17 against Toronto, Beckett gave up eight earned runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.

But Beckett's success convinced Francona that Beckett will be ready to return Friday against the White Sox at Fenway Park.

Good news because we're going to need him.

Red Sox prospect Sumoza to go to Braves in Kotsay deal

The Red Sox are expected to finalize the deal to acquire Mark Kotsay from the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Part of the issue that had been slowing the completion of the deal was the discussion between the Red Sox and Kotsay over the assignment fee he was contractually expected to receive for going there. Under his contract, Kotsay was to receive money if he was traded. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and Kotsay's representatives talked into Tuesday night to resolve that issue.

The teams are in the process of exchanging and reviewing medical information with the full expectation the deal will be formally finalized Wednesday.

Red Sox put Beckett on 15-day DL

BOSTON (AP) - Josh Beckett was put on the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed right elbow and manager Terry Francona hopes the Boston Red Sox ace can return to the rotation next Friday in Texas.

"Everything came out, the word would be awesome, from our standpoint," Francona said. "Everything was clean. There were a number of tests and Josh came thought with flying colors. Obviously, we hoped for that. We needed to get some closure."
Beckett was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola., Fla., on Friday.

"I don't trust anybody more than I trust him when it comes to stuff like that. Just to go down there and hear it from him. It's something I needed to do, just to clear my mind," Beckett said. "He said my ligament looked fine. That's what I was afraid of. ... It was a big relief."

Well, Pedroia batting cleanup turned out to be a great move!

Another big night for cleanup hitter Dustin Pedroia who has four hits for the second straight night. He became the first Sox hitter with back-to-back four-hit games since Wade Boggs June 8 and 10, 1989. Pedroia has 182 hits, one shy of the Sox record for second baseman set by Del Pratt in 1922. Pedroia was walked intentionally by Ozzie Guillen with a runner on third in an 8-2 game in the eighth. Pedroia reached base 10 consecutive times the last two games -- eight hits and two walks.

Looks like a win for the kid - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Apparently he's the first 2nd baseman to bat cleanup for the Sox since Carlos Baerga.

Happy berth day
For fifth time in six years, Sox wrap up a playoff spot

By Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff | September 24, 2008

The celebration erupted again at Fenway Park last night, Red Sox players storming from the dugout and streaming from the bullpen, a scene as familiar and predictable by now as the fall chill moving in. Korbel and Budweiser awaited in the clubhouse as they leaped on one another in the infield. There will be October baseball in Boston, something once rare, now expected, and always cherished.

On the strength of a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians before 37,882, the Sox clinched a postseason berth, their fifth in six seasons, and with it comes the opportunity to defend their World Series championship. Game No. 157 also may have given Sox followers a measure of schadenfreude, for the Yankees' streak of 13 consecutive seasons in the playoffs was officially snapped.

The Red Sox, who spent the playoffs at home 75 times in 85 seasons between 1918 and 2004, have become postseason stalwarts. But they remain unjaded, appreciative. They doused one another as if it were their first playoff trip, 50 Cent bumping on the clubhouse speakers.

Last nights celebration by the players was obnoxious And why the organization encourages it, is just as silly. To run around like you just won the World Series, spraying Policeman down with Champange and Beer is out right retarded... you beat the Indians to clinch the worst playoff seed in the AL.

It's just what they do.

For five of the last six years, the Sox have made it a practice to party like it's 1999 after a playoff-clinching victory.
