My take on the NCAA report.
Pearl should, and probably will, get smacked hard by the NCAA. He's a repeat offender, having been hit with a violation for the same type of impermissable in-home visit while at
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He shows a pattern of breaking the rules - a bunch of phone calls, in-home visits, and 'bumping' into a recruit at his school.
But there are two things that he did that should really get the NCAA riled up. First, he orchestrated a cover-up, and the NCAA has normally blasted people more harshly for the cover-up than for the original violations. Lying to the NCAA is something that really ticks them off. In this investigation, Pearl and 3 of his assistants didn't tell the NCAA the truth. And he even took the step of trying to influence Aaron Craft's father on what to tell the NCAA when they asked about the visit the Craft family took to Pearl's house.
Lastly, his actions spoke volumes when he cried in front of the cameras on September 10th last year, and then committed another NCAA violation by bumping into a recruit and having a 2-to-3 minute conversation with him just 4 days later. That clearly indicates that he shows no true remorse and will continue to break any rules he thinks he can get away with.
He should be hit with a 'show cause' penalty of multiple years (anywhere between 2 and 5 years works for me), meaning that he would not be allowed to hold a college coaching job for that time period, unless the institution that wanted to hire him could convince the NCAA that he is deserving of another chance before that time limit expires. No AD at a major college would even try to make that case. For comparison purposes, former Buckeye coach Jim O'Brien was hit with a 5-year 'show cause' penalty, but it was later reduced to 2 years.
Separately, I can't believe that AD Mike Hamilton will survive this. He hired Pearl and Kiffin, and he can't even take credit for the success of women's basketball, since UT has a separate AD for women's sports.
I think the Chancellor would be wise to fire both Hamilton and Pearl, either just prior to the NCAA hearing on the Notice of Allegations in June, or immediately afterward; in order to show to the NCAA that UT is making meainingful changes.
