Buckeye Offensive Line - 2004 (official thread)

T Gonzales showed some nice hands in the Spring Game and a knack for getting open. He also displayed some nice hands as Zwick found him time and again on a bail out. He never seemed to give up on trying to get open (in the spring). I took that as one nice positive from the Iowa game- that they weren't afraid to put him in there. The dude, according to his numbers, has some nice wheels as well.

Who doesn't like to see a Massillon guy hitting an Ignatius guy? :2004: (this icon is hilarious)

I think we need to start seeing more of players like Tony Gonzales. Play players that are trying their hardest. The players know who is giving a half-assed effort. They need to bench people that aren't trying or have a bad attitude. There are some players who are playing well.

Shaking up the lineup other than the OL won't help. If the WRs don't have the time to work themselves open and the QB doesn't have his 3.5 seconds to pass, then it's all for not.

I would have open audition for line positions this week. Let both the DLine and OLine switch back forth and see if anyone shows promise. Maybe guys like Cotton or Maupin might be able to throw some guys around from the OLine...
I'd be willing to bet that has already happened...Case in point is Barton getting the nod last week.

Tressel on 1460, possible OL shake-ups

on the BN premium board a poster listed what JT discussed on 1460 this afternoon.

-Rehring will definately see time at LT against IU.
-Simms will play guard when this happens.
-OL gets 0 movement in any direction, forward, left, or right, to provide any lanes or cutbacks for the rb's.
- he also spoke well of barton, said he makes freshman mistakes, which is kind of expected.
-sounds like they are trying to get the kids to just go all out, even if they make mistakes.

I for one will take a series of aggressive mistakes over passive ones anyday.

good I hope he really shakes things up every postion should be up for grabs, the way we've played. Even on the coaching staff.

He sort of implied that some players (starters) might be a little too comfortable.

I only got to listen to about 20 minutes fo the show... But it was the closest thing I've ever heard to Tressel calling the team out.

It was primarily on the effort, and then mentioned X's and O's as a possible secondary issue (Ideae being that it would only help to change X's and O's after they are playing with 'great velocity' -as he like to say- which makes soem sense) The offensive line was a the forefront of the criticism for at least part of it. (During the Rehring part).

He implied that the team might be both having a problem with full speed and also that he thinks they might be playing tight and needed to worry less about the things that might not go the right way and be more aggressive on every play.

None of it was real new... but he did single out the O-line as a unit that wasn't performing well....

As was noted above, Tressel addressed:

OL gets 0 movement in any direction, forward, left, or right, to provide any lanes or cutbacks for the rb's.

This was specifically in response to a caller (Marshall alum who appears to be a Buckeye Convert, at least as a sideline) who commented to the effect that he ddin't feel like the Offensive line was attacking and "giving the other guys snot bubbles" and attacking forward... To which Tressel agreed and said that you don't always have to attack forward, and that you need to move the defender in some direction... but regardless that wasn't getting done.

I definitely like the idea of our guys going out there and being more aggressive on offense. Some added aggresiveness on D might be good too, in terms of schemes and blitzing.

However one of our major problems on D has been over-aggresiveness leading to over-pursuit. That can be attributed to the youth we have out there though.

We NEED a win this weekened against Indiana. Not only will it help us towards getting to a bowl game, but it will be a big difference-maker in terms of team morale. Let's hope the added aggresiveness on offense leads to more scoring and gets us a much needed W.

if osu is going to turn things around, it has to be this weekend. a win this weekend and a little confidence to carry over against psu. the one good thing about young guys is that as quickly as things steamrolled downhill, they can do the opposite quickly as well. a few big wins and the team starts coming together.

This is right in line with what some folks are saying about kids being afraid to make mistakes. Concentrating too much on footwork and not enough on putting somebody on their ass.

As for the D, Simon Fraser said this today in the Dispatch:

"we're not as aggfressive as we have been in the past. I think it's just young players afraid to get burned depp, young players afraid to make mistakes and feel like they cost the team a game."
