Buckeyes from your hometown/HS

From Ironton (area)...

Jerry Fields, LB, Coal Grove. Drafted by the New York Titans of the AFL in 1961.

Kenny Fritz, OL, Ironton. First team All American, 1979. Drafted by the Steelers.

Walt Delong, OL, Ironton. Highly touted. Left Ohio State after about one quarter.

Jermon Jackson, RB, Ironton. Scored several touchdowns against in one game. Never quite lived up to expectations, but I think he did graduate.

Tyler "Tank" Whaley, OL, Ironton. Currently a walk on. One of the stronger players on the team. Got some PT in 2005.

Aaron Pettrey, K, Raceland, KY. Trying to win a starting spot with the Buckeyes.

Oh yeah...Redgie Arden.

Waverly High School graduate.

Eddie Thompson- Played QB at Waverly in the early 70's. Woody Hayes recruit who turned out to be an All-Big Ten linebacker I believe.

I know this isn't football but this year a boy from Waverly received a full scholarship for soccer from OSU. Congratulations Luke Purpero, who I believe holds several records in Division II for career scoring.

Waverly is a very small school in a tiny town so when somebody from here goes to Ohio State for athletics, it is no small accomplishment.

Chuck Hunter actually held the national career record for TD's coming out of HS with 59. Now kids score that in a season! Crazy! Chuck was an interesting player. Excellent speed for a guy his size 6'2" 220+ but not really "explosive". Great hands. He just never really fit into a particular spot. Although, he did catch the winning TD pass vs. UM in '79 capping our undefeated season. We were in camp together with Miami in '80. They tried him at RB and he almost made the freaking team! Chuck is QUALITY people. Very easy going guy:) . I think he's back in Delaware.

lagunasurf, I forgot you played with Chuck. He was a tweener but a terrific athlete and I remember watching him catch that TD in '79 to beat UM. In HS the guy was just unstoppable. He was one of the best to play in this area from that period (Randy White being at the top of that list). I actually went to Chuck's rival HS but had a great amount of respect for his talent. When he announced for OSU it was huge news to the local OSU alum group. Most of the best players here have either gone to PSU or ND through the years. He's the only OSU player from <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><ST1:pDelaware that I can ever remember. BTW, he also played at St. Marks with longtime Denver Bronco Steve Watson.

I'm from Cleveland Heights... and don't remember anyone good ever coming from that city.

However, I did go to Cleveland St. Ignatius...

Anthony Gonzalez
Ryan Franzinger
John Conroy
John Kerr
Joe Pickens
LeCharles Bentley
Mike Kne

...and countless others, I'm sure.

*edit- forgot Jim Massey. Too bad that his brothers (Mike and Pat) went to another Big Ten institution that I will not name at this point.
