Buckeyes in the draft/NFL Combine

I think some of you are getting the wrong idea of what these papers are about. Just because they file the papers does not mean they are thinking about leaving, they do this because it is an opportunity to see where they stand and things they need to work on. Coach Tressel actually encourages players to submit these papers, some of you get bent out of shape over things you shouldnt even be concerned about.

You're right about JT. Forget where I read it, but I think he does the internet search with them on a one-on-one basis.

It isn't unusual or unexpected for kids in college to be thinking about their chances on the job market as they contemplat their senior years. As everyone of these kids probably had dreams of playing in the NFL when they came to Ohio State, I am not surprised that they want to assess their chances "in the market".

Filing papers doesn't mean "I'm intent on leaving". On the other hand, if this team wins the national championship, then some of these players may consider that their market value will never be higher and choose to leave.

Loyalty may be defined by many fans as staying behind at your university for four years so that they can enjoy your skills for free. Personally, I wish that they all did. But, the reality today is that kids are a lot smarter about managing their careers and capturing some value from their own hard work since they were little.

Nobody should fault a player who wisely leaves for the NFL or feel that the player has rejected Ohio State. Instead, they choose to challenge themselves at the next level and we should be proud that kids of this calibre choose Ohio State as a place where they become men.

Plenty of OSU underclassmen eyeing NFL

Thirteen asked the league to project where they'd be drafted if they leave school.

Thirteen Ohio State football players have petitioned the NFL for help in determining their 2008 draft projections.
And the Buckeye who is most serious about declaring for the April 26-27 NFL draft is defensive end Vernon Gholston.

"I kind of encourage it," head coach Jim Tressel said. "I don't know if the NFL is happy with me. But instead of wondering about it, I like for the guys to kind of know so they can discuss it when they go home (for Christmas break)."

COLUMBUS: Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said Thursday that 13 of his players would be getting evaluations from the NFL to see in which round they might land in the draft next spring.
Ohio State will face LSU in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 7. Regardless of the outcome, OSU certainly would be a candidate to compete for a championship next season if its current lineup of juniors returns to school.

Thirteen will test draft stock

By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has been busy recruiting lately. He was in a prospect's school yesterday morning and planned to visit two homes last night. He had better step it up, because he might have more scholarships available than he first thought. And if he does, it's partly his fault.
Tressel said yes

13 Buckeyes get NFL Draft Evaluation

PD Article

....Tressel said Thursday that 13 Ohio State third-year players, at his encouragement, filed NFL paperwork this year. That's a list so extensive, it's hard to imagine exactly who is on it, considering Tressel wouldn't divulge the names. ......

Great move by Tress. I believe it shows genuine caring for his players well being, as well as, the teams well being. Obviously some players are ready and some aren't, but this takes the wondering out of it for all of them and allows them to move forward with their lives in the right direction for them.

SI.com - NCAA Football - 13?Ohio State juniors fill out NFL paperwork - Thursday December 13, 2007 6:00PM
Tressel twice declined to identify the players. Linebackers James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman, quarterback Todd Boeckman, defensive lineman Vernon Gholston, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and wide receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline later confirmed they had sent information to the NFL.
"I'm sure you could guess," Tressel said of the names on the list.

Other possibilities include tight end Rory Nichol, offensive linemen Ben Person and Steve Rehring and placekicker Ryan Pretorius. Two other players, defensive lineman Nader Abdallah and safety Anderson Russell, said they had not sent in the paperwork.

Not only does this give players free, helpful info, this evaluation seems like something that can be used as a motivational tool if the results come back worse than expected for a player. Having only one year left combined with a need to raise one's stock is great motivation to work hard.

Smart move by Tressel encouraging this.

Most OSU juniors just fishing for NFL info

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 12.17.2007
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? Any Ohio State fans who panicked when 13 of the Buckeyes? juniors submitted applications to have their NFL draft prospects evaluated should calm down.
While the names of all 13 were not revealed, probably no more than three of the current juniors will draw first-round NFL interest.
Linebacker James Laurinaitis, defensive end Vernon Gholston and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins have been projected as first-round draft choices by a number of draft analysts.
Several of the other players asking to be evaluated probably were just looking for feedback, trying to learn where they need to improve to be on NFL teams? radar next year.
Quarterback Todd Boeckman, of St. Henry, was one of the juniors who asked to be evaluated.
?I?m not thinking about (turning pro), but Coach Tressel thought it would be a good idea for us to see where we stand. But noticing a piece of paper sitting there that could determine your future is a little bit weird,? he said.
Last year, four Ohio State juniors asked for evaluations. Receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez got good reports and became first round draft choices. Running back Antonio Pittman was disappointed when he dropped to the fourth round after getting indications he would go higher. And offensive tackle Kirk Barton decided to stay at OSU after being told he could be a fourth or fifth-round pick.
Laurinaitis said he will discuss the NFL report with his family when he gets home for Christmas break on Wednesday, but described himself as ?definitely confident in coming back to this team. I love Ohio State, I love it here and I?m having a good time.?

Time to go? OSU juniors ponder NFL option

Wednesday, January 09, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
New Orleans- Ohio State appears to be engaging in some wishful thinking.
Among the notes, quotes and media guides available to reporters before Monday's BCS National Championship was "A look ahead to 2008" put out by Ohio State, a glossy foldout the size of a CD cover that extolled the virtues of next year's Buckeyes.
Linebacker James Laurinaitis was featured on the cover, while cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, defensive end Vernon Gholston, left tackle Alex Boone, linebacker Marcus Freeman, receiver Brian Robiskie and running back Beanie Wells were all represented by photos and lists of their accomplishments.

With Grant, Barton, Gholston, and probably 2 more of Jenkins, Boone, Freeman, and Laurinitis I'd expect OSU will comfortably have the most players active in the NFL next year. We held the most players on active for several weeks last year, but I don't think Miami and USC put as many guys into the league this year.

Buckeyes weigh NFL options

Thursday, January 10, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- A sign of hope for Ohio State fans? Junior linebacker James Laurinaitis said Wednesday night he plans to call former OSU star A.J. Hawk on Sunday to ask his advice about leaving for the NFL or staying for a senior season.
As a junior in 2004, Hawk declared his intentions to stay in school in December, had an All-American year, then was picked No. 5 by the Green Bay Packers in 2005 draft.
Laurinaitis also said he plans to meet with linebackers coach Luke Fickell and head coach Jim Tressel this week. Underclassmen must declare for the NFL draft by Tuesday, but they have three days to withdraw their name if they change their minds. Joe Laurinaitis said his son could at least put his name in to keep his options open while continuing to decide.
