C Amir Williams (Worcester Wolves - England)

So it isn't all about guards and wings in 2011 recruiting for the Arizona Wildcats. Sean Miller is scheduled to make an in-home visit with big man Amir Williams of Detroit Country Day next week, according to Williams' high school coach.
Country Day coach Kurt Keener said today that UA coaches are scheduled to meet with Williams sometime next week on campus, where he is conducting all his in-home visits. Williams has already met with Florida, DePaul and Oklahoma, and he's scheduled to receive a pitch from Ohio State tonight.
Keener said Miami (Fla.) is another possibility, since Williams has been there on an unofficial visit. Williams has not yet taken an official visit, nor scheduled any.
"I think he's got it down to 6-8 schools for home visits," Keener said. "His plan is to go through the home visits and then narrow it down" for official campus visits.
Arizona may have a good chance to attract Williams for a visit, since he has already dropped Michigan and Michigan State while making it clear that he is interested in playing away from home.
"I think he's fairly serious" about Arizona, Keener said. "They were in here a lot when they were recruiting Ray McCallum last year and Amir had a chance to meet their staff. He had always told me he wanted to go away for school. The economy is in the tank here and kids are looking to go new places."
Keener said his son, Joey, had the same feeling especially after the family vacationed in Arizona several years ago. In what certainly can't hurt UA's chances for Williams, Joey Keener is now a manager on Miller's staff.

Amir Williams off UA radar, too
Bruce Pascoe Arizona Daily Star

More evidence that Arizona has firmly capped its fall recruiting push at three: The Wildcats have canceled an in-home visit with Detroit Country Day forward Amir Williams originally scheduled for today.

Detroit Country Day coach Kurt Keener said it is likely, though not certain, that Williams will go ahead and make a choice this fall. UA will only recruit Williams further if he is willing to wait until spring and remains interested.

Keener said Williams and his family "would like to get the signing over in November, but I've been doing this 30 years and I know things can change."

Arizona's home visit was scheduled to be Williams' last. He also has hosted Michigan, DePaul, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Purdue and Florida.

Keener said he expected Williams will schedule official campus visits after he finishes the home visits.

Amir Williams' coach at Detroit Country Day, Kurt Keener, told the Arizona Daily Star that Arizona canceled an in-home visit with the big man today because it does not have room to sign him in November.

Williams visited in Detroit this week with coaches from Ohio State, Michigan, DePaul, Oklahoma, Purdue and Florida. Next he must decide which schools to make official visits to. He can take five, so at least one of the aforementioned six won't get one.

Ohio State desperately needs to land a big man in the 2011 class. Dallas Lauderdale is gone after this season and Jared Sullinger might be, too. That would leave only Boston College transfer Evan Ravenel in the post in 2011-12.

I contacted Amir Williams' coach at Detroit Country Day, Kurt Keener, to check where the 2011 center is in the recruiting process. Williams reportedly finished home visits last week with coaches from Ohio State, Michigan, DePaul, Oklahoma, Purdue and Florida. His next move is to decide which five schools to visit. Keener said Williams has not yet decided where he will visit nor if he will sign during the early period in November.

2011 prospect Amir Williams will visit

Ohio State will get a visit from 2011 big man Amir Williams on a weekend still to be determined, Williams' coach at Detroit Country Day School, Kurt Keener, said in an e-mail today.

Williams, a 6-foot-10, 220-pound center, made an official visit to DePaul last weekend and has one to Florida scheduled this weekend. Keener said Purdue and Ohio State also will receive visits but was not sure if dates had been set.

The other two schools Williams had in-home visits with last month are Michigan and Oklahoma, but he has not scheduled official visits to either and reportedly has eliminated Michigan. Keener told the Arizona Daily Star last month that Williams has told him he wants "to go away for school. The economy is in the tank here and kids are looking to go new places."

Amir Williams

Amir Williams? recruitment has begun to take shape this fall. The 6-11 senior now plans to make his college decision before the November signing day, rather than waiting until the spring.

To begin narrowing his once lengthy list of schools, Williams hosted a number of schools for in-home visits. Florida, DePaul, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Purdue and Michigan all made in-home visits over the last several weeks, according to Detroit Country Day coach Kurt Keener.

Next up, Williams will begin using his official visits. Williams made his first of five official visits last weekend, making the trip down to DePaul. According to Keener, his next official visit will be this weekend when he travels to Florida. The final three visits are expected to be Purdue, Ohio State, and Michigan but they have not been set in stone.

Is Amir Williams setting the stage?

Amir Williams' coach at Detroit Country Day, Kurt Keener, emailed me this morning that the 6-foot-10 center has tentatively planned his final three official visits for Oct. 29-30, Nov. 5-6 and Nov. 12-13. But Keener added that he was not sure which school -- Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue are the three -- Williams plans to visit on which dates.

It could be good news for Ohio State, though, because Keener said Williams still plans to sign during the fall signing period Nov. 10-17, and I've been told by a reliable source that Williams has told Buckeyes coaches he will visit them last -- sometimes a good omen when reading recruiting tea leaves.

Meanwhile, 6-10, 220-pound Amir Williams of Detroit said in a text message to The Dispatch that, despite McDonald's commitment, he still plans to make an official visit to Ohio State in the next few weeks.

McDonald played power forward and Williams center on the same Detroit-based AAU team this summer, and McDonald said they have talked about playing together in college. "It'd be pretty fun if we did," he said.

Reggie Rankin, a recruiting analyst for ESPN Scouts Inc., said McDonald's and Williams' skills are different enough that they could play as a tandem in college.

"Trey's got a bigger body," he said. "Amir's a long, lean athlete."

For obvious reasons I would have scheduled my visit to Ohio State for November 27th; however, maybe he didn't want to be away from home over Thanksgiving weekend.

I believe the early signing period ends Nov. 17. He's said he wants to sign by then so the visits need to happen before then.

Amir Williams down to five schools

ESPNU 100 center Amir Wiliams has narrowed his choices down to five schools, according to Detroit Country Day assistant coach Fred Massey.

The 6-foot-10 Williams will decide between Purdue, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida and DePaul. He will visit Purdue on Oct. 30, where injured forward Robbie Hummel will be his host. That will be followed by trips to Michigan on Nov. 5 and Ohio State on Nov. 12.

"Coming down the homestretch, Purdue, Ohio State and Florida are looking strong," said ESPN.com's Dave Telep.

As it stands, Matt Painter has two major outstanding scholarship offers for the class of 2011 (at least that are public knowledge). As many of you know, these two prospects are Amir Williams and Chasson Randle. While I'd be more than elated to land either of the two blue chip prospects, I am mildly confident that Painter will strikeout on both.

Here's a breakdown of why I feel this way...

Amir Williams
6'10"/220 lbs
Center
Beverly Hills, MI

I'll start by saying, I am VERY surprised that we are even on his list this late. I believe that his ties to the newly hired assistant coach Mike Jackson from Michigan is the only reason that Purdue is in his final list along with DePaul, Florida, and OSU. I feel this way simply because Purdue has not made him a priority until we started missing out on other prospects. I am amazed that he is giving us an official visit (October 31st). He's always listed Purdue among his favorites, but there was never much mutual interest beyond shallow declarations. Williams hasn't even set foot on campus prior to his pending visit.

But with Robbie Hummel as his host, maybe the new assistant coach' can get his first recruiting experience.

Luring Williams away from OSU is going to be tough sell. OSU has built a program catered to one-and-dones and I am sure that is the route they are taking for his recruitment. Trey McDonald, OSU's latest pickup, is a good friend and AAU teammate of Williams. It's widely believed that McD's scholarship was an attempt to lure Williams, much like Travis Trice was believed to be bait for...Cranden Mawson. Sure, Trey McDonald is a center, but he is projected to be more of a longer term 4-year project. His presence doesn't project to step on Williams' toes, as he'll likely be gone by the time McDonalds is part of their rotation.

Considering the time, or lack there of, Purdue has put in in his recruitment, and OSU's history with one-and-done caliber players, I don't see Amir Williams committing to Purdue.
