It is a risk to stay another year but nothing would suprise me at this point....he thinks differently than most kids in his position. There are negatives and positives to turing pro, the question is if the money is the most important factor for him and his family.

This just about sums it up (from SI article):

Here's the bottom line, based on my best available research. According to a highly reliable person who is close to the family, the key opinion is being voiced by Zoe Oden, who is the single mother to Greg Oden Jr. and his younger brother, Anthony, a high school junior. She has watched her son undergo right wrist surgery to repair a torn ligament suffered in high school, which sidelined him for the first seven games this season while subsequently limiting his contributions at the offensive end. She also noticed that Clippers 21-year-old point guard Shaun Livingston suffered a potentially career-ending knee injury last week upon crumpling after a routine layup. I am told, emphatically, that she and Greg realize that the windfall opportunity to help his family isn't guaranteed until he signs an NBA contract. That point of view makes more sense than anything else that's been said on the subject.

Sometimes, I almost have to pinch myself when I think that we recruited such a talented, humble player who represents himself and the University so well. Regardless how long he stays, we are honored to have Greg Oden wearing the scarlet and gray. :osu:

Also from that article...

What will be Oden's NBA impact?
When I asked O'Neal last week if he expected Oden to make the same impact on the NBA as Shaq did in 1992-93, he was quick with his answer. "No... when he comes in, he has to be a young ninja and go through all the other ninjas before he gets to the shogun. He's got to go through [Kevin] Garnett, Duncan, [Amar?] Stoudemire, [Yao] Ming, [Eddy] Curry -- so he's got to go through all those guys before they give him status. That's what I had to do when I came in. I had to go against [Patrick] Ewing, [Robert] Parish, [Arvydas] Sabonis before they made me the shogun. And now everybody's coming after me.''

The Big Shogun has spoken!

Ohio State?s Greg Oden will wait until after the season to decide whether he?ll enter the NBA draft.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Despite what you may have heard from people who already have him going No. 1 in the NBA draft, Greg Oden is perfectly content being a college student.
The freshman strives to make his 7-foot, 270-pound body fit in with the rest of the student body at Ohio State.
For instance, he?s taking history of rock ?n? roll and sociology this quarter.
?I?m doing pretty decent,? he says, a grin playing at the corners of his mouth.

Cont'd...

You wonder if seeing his best friend's life cut tragically short may play a role on him deciding to "Get while the gettings good" in the NBA?

We'll see, I hope he stays but highly doubt he will.

maybe im the only one who hopes greg does what is best for him.

the way i see it.

going pro.
the good. signs shoe contract, gets his playing contract gets money.
the bad. struggles against players who are bigger and stronger than he has faced, i think youd be foolish to think he hasnt sturggled against big/strong players and the nba is going to bring out his need for more s&c time.

staying
the good. the grant hill/tim duncan factor, both these guys have gone on record saying staying helped them mature, allowed for more certainty in their success in the league. thus they added they might have missed out on a few years of $, but they already have tens of millions, what is 10 million more? also both stated being more mature/developed allowed for the bigger second contract.
the bad, he gets hurt, cashes in hi multimillion dollar ncaa insurance policy for a career ending injury.

the reality is the kid is in a win big, win, wing big, win situatuion...

best of luck to greg no matter what. its been a joy no matter what.

I believe that this is what could be going on in Greg's head, along with the wrist injury earlier in the year...Also I believe that his mom wants him to go...

Also Congrats to Greg on first team all-big ten and freshmen of the year in the big ten.
