If you find one that buys your gear, let me know :tic:

That would be nice, wouldn't it? I'll graduate in two quarters I'll just be happy if I can find a non-retail job that pays enough to afford a shitty house.

I have a feeling this Journalism degree is going to be useless..

But at least I'll have a solid camera.

I know in the photography world I'm likely a minority, but I am rather fond of my entry level Sony Alpha and the options Sony has with their DSLRs. I got the A200 when it was the new entry level model for Sony, so it cost about $500 with the 18-70 lens kit, but it has proved to be versatile and enjoyable to shoot with. You may be tempted to go for a long range zoom lens for your first additional lens purchase, and unless you constantly find yourself in situations where you need it, I would recommend buying a different lens. I made that mistake, and now I'm wishing that I had an ultra-wide angle (10-24mm range) in my camera bag instead of my 75-300. I believe you can get an A250 kit for around $350-450 now, although you may find it worthwhile to jump up to the 350 or 500 model.

Josh, just wondering if any of your advice has changed over the past year or if you've found any place better for purchases than those links?

ME: We need a camera that can take pictures and things
HER: We need a camera that can *blah, blah, blah*.....SLR....*blah, blah, blah*.....primary purpose (*cough* if the IRS asks) is to take high quality pictures of her art so that it can be archived and posted. She's tired of having to fuss with every picture in photoshop so that it will look like the painting. Also, it would be used for landscapes, the nature, birds, etc.....(only as source materials for more paintings :paranoid:).

I don't know what any of this stuff means, but I told her you were the man with the plan, so, yeah?

Any updates?

Big piece of advice for SLR investers:

Put your money into lenses over cameras if you can. Lenses retain their value, cameras freefall in residual value. Also, average cameras and great lenses are a much better combo than the opposite.

My Canon 1D Mark II camera:

2004 - $4500
2007 - $1900 (used price)
2009 - $1000 (used price for my second body)
2010 - $700

:shake:

Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS

2003 - $1800-1900
2008 - 1800-1900 (I used a coupon for $1500)
2010 - 1900

So if you are going to make some bigger investments, get quality glass (lenses). Your fancy new camera will be worth dirt in a few years.
The new 70-200 f2.8L IS II costs 2400, which bumps the original down to 1450. So despite a model coming out that costs $600 more, my original purchase price is still right on the market value.

Meanwhile my old used 1D Mark II still keeps free falling in price.

As a sports shooter, I'm now using two mid-level Canons instead of my 1D Mark II for all afternoon and evening games. While the focusing, tracking & shutter speed are inferior, the ISO performance is just too much of a hindrance compared to the new canon/nikon sensors as far as high ISO noise/performance. This comes on the high end 1D line too, but I don't have 6000 to drop on a body, let alone two bodies. I'll eventually upgrade when the 1D Mark IV drops down into the 1-1.5k range. Right now it still goes for 3k.

Here's a mild deal on the T3
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3483626

Canon Rebel T3 + 18-55mm + 16gb SD card + Lens Filters + Pro 9000 Mark II Printer
Camera is $500
printer is $430 with $400 rebate
use a $30 off $900 code BDREWARD30 to get total down to $900
and final price after rebate is $900-$400 = $500
A pretty basic comparison of lower end models in terms of video recording (which I know is quite helpful here )
t3 is the lowest model 720p recording, 12mp (This deal)
t2i improvement includes 1080p recording, 18mp ($512 + tax including 18-55mm lens by canon loyalty program)
t3i improvement includes flip-able screen. ($750 including 18-55mm lens)
60D is slightly better then t3i, better built, slight more features. ($640 body only by canon loyalty program)

There have been many deals recently like this... this deal has now expired, but this is a pretty sweet way to get a lot of equipment, especially if you decide to resell some of it on ebay or CL
Amazon has Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18MP Digital SLR Camera w/ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens + EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 Lens + EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens + Tiffen 58mm UV Protection Filter + Canon PIXMA Pro 9500 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer for $849 after $500 rebate with free shipping. Thanks Badandy538

  4. Click here and add UV Filter to cart
  5. Click here and add PIXMA Pro 9500 Mark II to cart
