CLEVELAND (Ticker) - Seeking to improve their perimeter shooting, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired swingman Jiri Welsch from the Boston Celtics for a first-round pick in 2007 before Thursday's trading deadline.

Welsch started 32 of 55 games for the Celtics this season and averaged 7.5 points on 43 percent shooting. He lost his starting job to rookie guard Tony Allen last month and watched his minutes diminish.

The Cavaliers have been starting Ira Newble at shooting guard. The 6-7 Welsch will likely split time at the position and gives the team a much-needed 3-point shooter.

"He is an aggressive, complete player that can impact offense and defense, so we look forward to his involvement on both ends of the court. Jiri has the talent needed to make the difference for us this season and we look forward to seeing him excel as a Cavalier."

Cleveland was relying on Lucious Harris to fill that role, but he has made just 28 percent of his 3-point attempts this season.

Welsch, 25, hit 38 percent of his 3-point shots in 2003-04 for Boston and has converted 32-of-99 shots from the arc this season. A native of the Czech Republic, Welsch was acquired by Boston in a multi-player deal along with center Raef LaFrentz in the deal which sent Antoine Walker to Dallas in October 2003. The 16th overall pick in the 2002 draft, Welsch also has played for Golden State and Dallas.

Possibly a good pick up for the Cavs, he is a decent outside shooter.

anyone have any idea if he can play defense. I really don't like this move. I hope he proves me wrong.
I agree. The only way I can even see giving up a 1st round pick for him as being a good move, is if the Cavs are a legitimate title threat by 2007 and the pick is in the last 10 picks of the first round. Then its basically a crapshoot and with the way the Cavs have drafted (besides James and Boozer), then its about an equal trade off.

One thing to consider here. They are giving up a 2007 draft pick, which means the draft after next season. it's quite possible the cavs will be a high seed playoff team next season, meaning the 1st round pick will be very late.

i guess considering that its not a bad deal for someone picked 16th overall that is slowly being acclimated to the game.

Aren't the Cavs short on future picks already? I think in addition to this one, they owe another first rounder and 2 or 3 second rounders. I'll have to wait and see how this guy performs but his stats aren't impressive. The fact that Redd and Boozer were 2nd round picks leads me to believe that the Cavs could still pickup a player of his skill level late in the first round.

I believe the Cavs saw what the Bucks were doing... which was bailing on contracts in a BIG way... Bucks may get to about $23M under the cap... so Bucks will throw huge $$$ at Redd to resign...

That probably made the Cavs consider a plan B... which was Welsch... Even if the Cavs could possibly land Redd in the off-season, Welsch would be a great backup or worst case, good trade bait...

I further suspect the Cavs are giving up on the draft, per se... look at all the folks drafted in the top 15 spots year in and year out that are busts... they probably decided to forego drafts and instead buy provens in the free agent market... plus the fact I am confident they feel they won't be selecting in the top 20 for the next few years...

Actually from what I've seen, the last two drafts have produced excellent players. The only huge bust I can think of it Milicic.
can't disagree with last two... but then DuJuan Wagner comes to mind... so does that Tsik dude picked in the top five... and I'm not impressed with Kwame Brown... or Kedrick Brown... Gooden looks good but he was the #4 pick his year... so in general, if you don't have one of the top 8 picks... maybe the draft ain't the way to go...

Hopefully he will bring what Lucious Harris has failed to do. Bring a consistent mid to long range jumper off the bench. With Harris & Snow not being able hit the ocean from a row boat, we need someone to hit a jumper.

For every Boozer and Redd, you have 50 players that blow as 2nd round picks. Since it's a lottery protected pick, why not try to make your shooting better. If the Cavs would somehow suck in 2007 and get a lottery pick, then they get to keep it and the Celtics would have to wait to get a first .

His career (albeit short) 3 pt% is better than anyones on the current roster. Harris has been given the chance and has sucked. I'm always interested in how new players can be upgraded by playing with LeBron.Hell, he's got nowhere to go but up after playing with selfish players like Ricky Davis, Payton and Pierce.

I'm happy they didn't trade away anyone on the current roster just to get a shooter. Well' at least anyone thats not a complete turd. Paxson, please feel free to dump Snow , Diop, Wagner, Harris and S. Williams for a roll of toilet paper.

I still think Luke Jackson deserves a chance next season to prove that he can be the shooter we're looking at to hit some big shots.

To me it seems like everyone the Cavs bring in plays better with the Cavs than they did before. Boo$er sure as hell is playing a lot worse than he did with Lebron. As long as Welsch can hit open 3's and play good D this will be a good trade for the Cavs. One of the articles that I read today said that Welsch was put on Lebron when they played earlier this season. That means that he is probably a decent defender. I can't wait to see the game tonight.

I also think Jackson with be a good 2 once his back heals.

Bingo! He is actually a pretty solid defender and will fit in with the 2nd unit and as he gells might become the guard that comes in to finish games. Here is a little analysis from Foxsports.com

Cavaliers get Welsch

Jiri Welsch to

Welsch is a versatile combo guard/small forward who knows how to play. He has long arms, is a good overall athlete, and can routinely drain 3-pointers if his feet are set. He can also handle and push, but isn't very quick with the ball. While he's not a terrific finisher (he relies on pump fakes to gain space near the basket), Welsch uses picks extremely well and can pull up for accurate jumpers going left or right. His lack of outstanding foot speed is a handicap in defending quicker players, but Welsch always works hard at both ends. A terrific pickup for the Cavaliers!
What this team needs is a guy that can hit the open jumper. While I love Sasha's talent he is more of a slasher compared to a pure jumper. I am getting tired of Sasha throwing up airballs when is all alone for a 3 pointer.
