We'll be OK at safety, wide corner is a big concern.
Do we move Jenkins to wide side or is it better not to mess with him?
I say, Move him to wide side. He has the most experience and he's got size and the speed.
Short side corner isn't as demanding. Welch could do a fine job there. Or Amos.
And how about Freeman in a Carp role? Outside backer and drop him down to pass rush. That might work.
The pass rush will be key. If we get somebody to pressure from our group of young DEs , or a Carp-like performance, it could greatly help the young guys in the secondary.
I'll be surprised if Heacock can't figure things out and get a solid ,if not very good defense.:tongue2:

Youboty leaving will be huge, as he has deep experience, but in the same aspect, we have a SHIT LOAD of underclassmen that came highly recruited and have yet to see the field. This also may help us in recruiting. More and more highschoolers are wanting to start early, so they will see us playing redhsirt freshman and sophmores and be attracted to the program.
Also, the thing alot of us are forgetting is the main thing about Tressel - He can prepare. You give a kid 2 weeks under the great players we have and Tressels coaching, and there is no telling how many All-Americans we can have.
But mainoly, just wanna say - Thanks for the years of hard work Youboty. Leaving Africa must have been hard and you showed just how much of a man it made you.

Yup. He'll be drafted based on potential rather than what he can immediately do for their team. You better believe that one of his draft weaknesses is defending the long ball.
Best wishes to Ashton though! You were a GREAT Buckeye and I will always have very fond memories of you. My favorite was the INT on the goal line against scUM a couple years ago that he returned past the 20. Not only did he keep scUM from scoring, but he helped change the momentum of that game and gave us the ball back.
With that said though, you will be missed Ashton.

Youboty latest Ohio State defender to leave early

COLUMBUS | Ohio State coaches have been engrossed in recruiting since returning from the Fiesta Bowl last week, and defensive coordinator Jim Heacock might want to consider hanging a shingle outside his door for visiting prospects that says, "Starters needed, apply within."

<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Heacock and the rest of the staff received the crushing news over the weekend that junior defensive backs Ashton Youboty and Donte Whitner have decided to leave school early to turn pro.
The Buckeyes were already looking for replacements for seven senior starters on defense, leaving Heacock with nine vacancies to fill.
"Obviously, we would have liked to have had them come back from our standpoint, but they've got to do what they think is best," Heacock said of the departing duo. "That's their job, to research and see where they think they're going to be (taken in the draft), and we certainly honor their decision and wish them good luck and move on."
Youboty and Whitner, neither of whom could be reached for comment, are considered second-round material, but they could move up by testing well for NFL scouts.
"I know those guys filled out the papers from the NFL to see where they'd be drafted, and I know they've talked to a lot of people," Heacock said. "They're doing what they feel is best for them, and that's what we want — what's best for them. I hope it works out for them."
Youboty was a first-team All-Big Ten selection this season and led the Buckeyes in pass break-ups with nine and was fourth in tackles with 56.
Whitner also was a first-team all-conference choice and was the team leader in interceptions with two and was third in tackles with 56.
Elmer Mosbey of Klein, Texas, is Youboty's legal guardian and helped the player sort through the decision process.
"We felt this timing was what best fit him," Mosbey said. "We hope he'll be drafted on the first day (in the first three rounds), but we're just thankful for the opportunity he had with Ohio State. Those fans are second to none."
The Buckeyes had the top-rated defense in the Big Ten this season, but the mass exodus leaves only defensive linemen Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson as returning starters.
Although there is at least some experience elsewhere on the unit, freshman cornerback Malcolm Jenkins is the only holdover to finish among the top 10 on the team in tackles.
"We'll have a real good defensive line, and we've got some linebackers who have played," said Heacock, mentioning Marcus Freeman and Mike D'Andrea, both of whom missed most of the season with knee injuries.
"We always need guys to step up — we just need a few more this time."

Bummer. I really feel Youboty and Whitner are making a mistake. If both of them came back both would have had a good shot at being all-americans and being definite first rounders. Best of luck to them. Ohio St. with out a doubt has been Defensive Secondary U this past decade. Plummer, Winfield, Gamble, Doss, Nickey, Fox, Salley, Whitner, Springs, Youboty, and I'm sure I'm forgetting others will have played in the League. This is a sincere question, has anyone produced that many players in the secondary as us recently?

Well, I'm impressed with BP - haven't seen any "Ginn to Corner" threads yet.
We have 2 guys who have started and played alot, Mitchell and Jenkins.
We have Super-Jamario who has had a year to get accustomed to the college game. Welch hopefully will stay out of the doghouse. Lyons also will vie for a safety or nickel spot. Amos looks to be a very good cover guy as well.
Plus, these guys now know they have a chance to either start or play alot, so we should see a group of highly motivated young players this spring!
I wish Ashton and every other Buckeye who is entering the draft a long and successful NFL career.

Ginn to Corner, Brilliant!!!
This will be a big spring for a lot of the younger DB's to show what they're made of. The way I see it Jenkins is the only player with a spot locked down. Mitchell, O'neal, and Welch are probably the favorites for the other 3 spots, but who's to say that someone else won't come in and impress the coaches. The DB's and OL will be the units to watch this spring and if JT wants to give Ginn a look at dimeback, that'd be cool.

Ohio State can exhale now that Texas quarterback Vince Young announced he's heading to the NFL. The Buckeyes need that break because they'll have inexperienced defensive backs chasing Longhorn wide receivers in the second game of the 2006 season.
Junior cornerback Ashton Youboty has made himself eligible for the NFL draft, joining junior safety Donte Whitner, who hasn't made an official announcement but has the Buckeyes coaches assuming he won't return next season. Seniors Nate Salley and Tyler Everett made up the rest of the starting defensive backfield, though freshman corner Malcolm Jenkins started three times and saw plenty of action.
Jenkins will count as an experienced player in the fall, with nine starters now gone from the defense that finished fifth in the nation in both yards and points allowed per game.
Jenkins should start at one corner, while Brandon Mitchell, who started seven games in his first three years with the Buckeyes, at one safety spot. Former Glenville star Jamario O'Neal, who played on special teams as a freshman, could lead the charge for one of the other starting spots, with two players who redshirted as freshmen this year, Andre Amos and Donald Washington, among those to watch.
Youboty was selected to the All-Big Ten first team this year, joining defensive teammates Salley, Whitner, A.J. Hawk and Mike Kudla. Fourth on the team in tackles with 56, Youboty intercepted one pass and led the team with nine pass breakups.
He is likely to be selected in the first three rounds of the draft, probably ahead of Whitner, if only because cornerbacks are more valued than safeties. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has Youboty ranked third among junior defensive backs, while he lists Whitner 11th.
"It is important to be grounded and not listen to a lot of hype," said Elmer Mosbey, Youboty's uncle who confirmed his decision Sunday night. "Ashton is so thankful to the people who helped him understand the ramifications of his decision, on both sides. He brought all that together and talked with his family and made the decision he felt was best."
