CB E.J. Underwood (transfer to Pikeville)

Is Underwood better than Fox ? Last year I thought the only thing that made Fox better than Underwood was Underwoods bad habbit of not looking back for the ball. But he is not doing that now and stays with his man much better than fox. Fox has the speed but just doesn't look like a natural CB. Underwood does not have the experience that Fox has but I think Underwood is slightly better at this point. Not because Fox had a bad couple of practices, but because he was a bad habbit away from being better last year. His habbit is gone and he is a chest to chest type of player. Fox does lay the hits that make player shy away from the ball but Underwood can keep it out of there hands more effectively if you ask me. But you didn't ask !

In a word, "No".

After some thought, I decided to come back and edit this to expand. Underwood not only had a bad habit of not looking back, he bit on a few moves and got burned several times. I didn't see Fox get "burned" all last season. The bad "habit" that Fox has is he closes too quickly sometimes and arrives at the receiver before the ball does. Then again, I'd rather have him get flagged for PI on short routes a couple times a game than give up a huge play or even a TD. Gamble is the best corner on the team and Fox is number two. Hopefully some of the younger corners can close the gap...

After watching both of them a good deal at practice the other day I think EJ is closing the gap on Fox for the #2 corner spot. Dustin has the advantage of an extra year and has proven what he can do on the field, EJ at this point has not. Fox had a bad afternoon and from what other posters have said he has had a rough camp.
Time will tell who the better player is but at this point you have to give Fox the nod on experience alone. EJ did look awfully good though. Depth certainly is a nice thing to have...

Underwood is the better cover CB in my book. Fox is much better against the run. EJ's bad "habit" was just inexperience and lack of confidence IMO. He seems to have that fixed. Fox is a good CB, and I hope he hasn't regressed from last year. EJ is undoubtably better than last year IMO. I'd still give the nod to Fox overall because of his run support and experience, but I think EJ has more potential as a CB.

after starting on a 14-0 team all year, Fox deserves the nod. But dont be surprised if underwood eats up close to half of his reps.

Hey mili, your right about underwood biting on some moves last year. I remember one when he and Doss were burned to death. But I do remember several times being mad at fox for watching the qb while his man got away and made a play. They are very close as far as there all around ability.

Trust me, I would be the first to say "Hooray" if Underwood caught up to Fox in covering ability. That way, I'd move Fox back to safety with Will Allen. But, Fox is going nowhere but corner until someone gets as good as him at corner (aside from Gamble, of course).

I agree Underwood still needs to prove himself in a real game. You definately start Fox for now, but I think EJ is earning some playing time. If he proves in a game he's a stud, then maybe the coaches do move Fox. Mitchell seems to have really caught their eye, though, and looks like he'll be a hard guy to keep off the field.

Mitchell is adding some serious depth to the saftey spot. I here he is laying wood like a cabin builder. The lack of a need for Fox at saftey will keep him at CB and he will start all year if healthy but I think his minutes will decrease all year.

EJ was supposed to start ahead of Gamblor?

This is from collegefootballnews.com in their column on breakout spring stars:

DB E.J. Underwood, Ohio State – The likely replacement for Chris Gamble has the skill set to be even better than his predecessor, a first-round pick in last month’s NFL Draft. In fact, he was slated to start ahead of Gamble late last September before slashing his thumb on a bottle of A-1 sauce. Underwood has star-in-the-making qualities.

They got this one backwards a little bit. Underwood was supposed to be the Gamblor's backup, but when he sliced his thumb- supposedly on a bottle of A-1- (this little thumb slicing incident always makes me ask: "What would Ronnie Lott Do?") this made it so Gamble could not risk injury- as much because they had to go with "Sheikh" Youboty.
