Chicago White Sox 2007 Season Thread

Bowden and Lowrie you can have. Buchholz and Ellsbury are on the "untouchable" list IIRC.

I really think the WhiteSox will demand either Bucholz or Ellsbury as part of any package. You also have to take in consideration that the Yankees have already been proposing trades to the WhiteSox for Buehrle. This just drives the price up for the RedSox, last thing they would want is for the Yankees to land him.

I doubt Theo would give up either, despite what the Yankees decide to do. I don't think the Yankees have the available resources (position-player wise) anyway if Chicago's putting him on the block solely with the purpose of beefing up their farm system. The Red Sox aren't really in a position where they need Buehrle, and unless Boston gives him the long-term deal that he wants (and I've read he's asking for Zitoesque money), then he'd essentially be a 4-month rental.

I honestly think two of either Bowden, Lowrie, or David Murphy + either Brandon Moss or a B-level prospect would be enough to get a deal done.

how is trading the best pitcher going to help in the long run though? we aren't going to get somebodies top prospect for him, he'll be pitching for another team which makes them better, and when it's all over with we'll still be a team that can't hit for shit.....except we won't have an ace.

Well part of it is that people want to get something in return for his talent.

Essentially he's said that if he doesn't get the right length of contract he's leaving anyway, correct? I seem to think that's been said at some point.

then give him the contract.

I agree with you.

Unfortunately for White Sox fans, it's about 50-50 that they will.

I'd personally think this would be a no-brainer to re-sign him, especially considering what a guy with about 1/2 the talent got from San Francisco, that Buherle is only 28, that his only bad year was last year and is showing no signs of repeating that this year, given that it appears the White Sox might start a firesale, he's the perfect guy to build around, etc, etc....

I agree they should give him the contract, but they never will. It would be along the lines of 5 years 75-80 million. The WhiteSox have way to many holes to fill in the off season. That contract will not allow them to go after top notch FAs.

Dennis Eckersley thinks the Red Sox should pass:

"I'm not a big Buerhle guy at all. Talk about pitching to contact. Everybody hits him. The only thing good about him is that it doesn't take very long to pitch a game, one way or another. He throws a lot of strikes. I mean not to get on him, lefthanders have always amazed me how they get by. He knows how to pitch obviously, he threw a no-hitter, he's one of the best lefthanders around. I just... I'm afraid of him. I'm afraid of him because he throws too many strikes. I just, Fenway Park, I really don't know. You're only renting him for a couple of months, but beyond that, I'm just not a big fan of his because I think he's very hittable ... to me Gabbard's like Buerhle, but younger and throws harder." -- 6.25.07, Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan show
