Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

Saved from the cutting room floor -- Chris Ash edition
By Bill Rabinowitz

I interviewed five people for my profile on Chris Ash that ran in today’s Dispatch. My talks with Ash and those who know him well probably lasted about two hours combined. As is often the case with me when I do stories like this, I had way more information than I could possibly fit in the story that ran in the paper.

As I’ve done on occasion, I’ve decided to pass on a lot of the unused quotes – or give the fuller version of quotes I had to shorten – so that our readers can get an even fuller sense of the person I was profiling...

... Aaron Henry, who played for Ash at Wisconsin and became an All-Big Ten player.
“He’s a perfectionist. He’s one of those guys who’s going to be first guy in the building and the last to leave. His first three months (at Wisconsin), he had a home but slept in the facility. He became the DC and he was at facility at 5 in the morning. Nobody is going to outwork that guy. He’s going to find ways to get his players better and will put his players in position to have success ....

... “If it was up to Chris Ash, that guy would blitz and play man press all game. He loves pressure and he loves for his corners to be in your face. I’m sure he’s going to have a little say in the defense. That back end will be better.

I rented a house boat for a week at Bull Shoals, AK. It was the most economical place to rent. Great party.

Did it look like this?

I'm actually more encouraged by Bob Hunter's blurb in the "Dispatch" about Chris Ash handling both corners and safeties (entire secondary), according to Gene Smith

Yes, totally awesome!!!!

Exactly how Ohio State’s revamped defensive coaching staff will operate has yet to be defined by coach Urban Meyer, but athletic director Gene Smith has provided a little clarity.

Though Chris Ash’s title is co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Smith told The Dispatch this week that Ash will be in charge of all defensive backs. Kerry Coombs, who has coached cornerbacks the past two years, will provide assistance and continue in his role as special-teams coordinator.

“Chris is going to coach the entire secondary — safeties and corners,” Smith said.

As for who will have ultimate say over the defense — Ash or co-coordinator Luke Fickell — Smith said he doesn’t know.

“(Meyer) and I have not discussed” how it’ll work, he said. “There are situational calls. I’m not sure how he’s going to break that down.”

Smith, you have zero say-so as to who calls what...that's solely UFM's decision. Keep your yap shut and just sign the paychecks...

Speaking as someone who has defended Smith on this board against his (many) detractors, I have to say his comments regarding the team as reported by the Dipsatch this morning were pretty unseemly. He needs to leave the coaching of the football team up to Coach Meyer, the coaching of men's basketball up to Coach Matta, and so on and so on.

I was laughing at lunch Friday because I was thinking to myself that Coach Meyer could be the sort of person to hire an outside efficiency expert (somewhat of a business consultant or "The Bob's" from "Office Space").

And the first suggestion was to probably streamline the defensive backfield so they're hearing only one voice (Chris Ash).
