Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Go back and watch the presser announcing he was leaving. Matta made numerous references to how difficult his job was. That is not the language of someone who is where they want to be.
Are you saying that Matta lost his enjoyment of coaching, sometime in the last 5 or so years and maybe due to his back or other factors, and once that happened he was no longer able to do it well?

Well, I think this was as good of a hire as we could get given the timing of everything. As furious as I am at GS for not doing this sooner and keeping Archie Miller in Ohio, I am nonetheless excited to see what Holtmann can do here and will certainly be patient to see what results he can get. Who knows, maybe Miller tanks at IU and Holtmann thrives...I think both will have at least some decent level of success but it will be interesting to watch. I think Holtmann is going to at least give us a watchable season this year, but I don't even think Coach K could get the 2017-18 team to sniff a chance at the tourney. However, if he can bring in some top level recruits and keep some key targets in-state, the 2018-19 team could be very fun to watch. It will be a process but I am excited to see what Coach Holtmann brings to the table. Welcome aboard coach!

Here is a brief article from Rivals basketball on the recruiting implications of the hire and Eric Bossi's opinion that this was a very good hire.

Guys...we're great here. Trust me.

I'm excited.
This isn't to say it's going to be an easy road. The program in it's current state is not good. Midwest basketball is as tough as it's been- UK, UofL, IU, Purdue, MSU still destination name (heck even next tier, ND has an established brand, Xavier, Michigan, Illinois with a great hire, and the program Chris is leaving, Butler). This is an uphill battle, but Holtmann will make us competitive and proud again. I have no doubts about this hire.

We are going to see such a dramatic change the next couple years in how we play. His Bulldogs get after it defensively. Effort will not be a question. I mentioned in the searching thread about the "Butler Way" but for those that don't know it really dates back to Matta, Stevens, briefly our friend Brandon Miller and then Holtmann. It's about doing things the right way- smart basketball that we haven't seen in years. This is one of those "proud of our guys off the court, in the classroom...and most importantly" type of hires. I've been around the Butler program enough to know this is the cradle of coaches and we just took a good one.

Again, I won't predict instant results but I'm telling you this is an exciting hire. Give this some time but Coach Holtmann will get the Buckeyes back.

Recruiting "fell off" but it wasn't a train wreck (up until like last year)

They werent pulling in UK type classes but they were still landing decently high rated players.

He was still pulling in good recruits as recently as 2015, but the development hasn't been there for a few years now.

Not to mention that 2015 class mostly left OSU by 2016, so I would add "retention" to "development" on the list of issues.

Regardless, Thad's overall run was a good one. I don't want to dissect it here, so I'm moving on to Holtmann.

I don't expect to see Archie Miller fall on his face at IU, but I agree with the sentiment that we can go toe-to-toe with him with this hire. Recruiting at Ohio State has always been a tenuous proposal, but we have lots of curb appeal that can still be utilized as others said. This winter, we should be better than we would have been without the hire, and I think that's as much as you can ask in the short term. I have no idea what the McDermott crap was about, but like Max said....we ended up where we need to be.

Despite the mid-week panic, GS did have a solid hire in place by the end of the week. Not the whale that many thought was in his back pocket, but I'm pretty happy with the direction men's b-ball will be taking. He has some big shoes to fill though, and I hope people aren't expecting a Thad-5 kind of launch.

Yeah, I agree. Not a whale, but I think he is a solid hire who needs to be given a chance to succeed.

Re: The contract is for eight years and a total of roughly $24 million.

Just sayin': Holtmann's final legacy at Ohio State shouldn't even count the first couple years. It's going to take him a couple years to get "his players" in here. It's no secret that he is taking over a team where "the cupboard is really bare". With the current roster, it wouldn't surprise me to see Ohio State predicted to finish 15th in the B1G for the 2017/2018 season (and it is only a 14 team conference).

Reading this Gregg Doyel story in the Indy Star and it seems like someone (or a group of someones) was back-channeling Chris Holtmann early (like in the Winter/Spring).

http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...-jobs-you-have-take-ohio-state-one/384065001/

I'm perfectly fine with sending smoke signals early and to always be prepared.

He wants to be here. Now lets go win.

Yeah, I think Gene probably thought he had him earlier this week and he tried to use McDermott as leverage to get Holtmann to back off some contract demands. Didn't work. But we got the guy we wanted. I have no doubt about that. And it should be a great transition from the best coach this program has had in my lifetime. Thank you Coach Matta. Let's do this Coach Holtmann.

very plausible and if that's the case I offer a full apology to GS

I'm often wrong, not hard to admit it

Now, like someone above said...let's go win.

and schrage. few so-called mid-major assistants have a pedigree that comes close to his.

being a columbus native whose reputation for recruiting is good, though, pedon would be awesome.
Someone on a Butler basketball forum is claiming that:
Word is that entire staff is likely to follow Holtmann to OSU, aside from one possibly being promoted.

I believe Willis also said earlier this was a part of the contract negotiations.
