Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Fruitless exercise but I am a fan of the recent trend of getting a top assistant coach from a good/great program.

See- Tommy Lloyd, Arizona (former Gonzaga asst). Jerome Tang, Kansas St. (former Baylor asst). Not sure who else fits that bill - the guys at Kansas and other top 5 teams seem like lifers.

That said…

Dante Jackson (Xavier asst), former X player, young (34), Columbus native

Michael Lewis (Ball State head coach), former IU player late 1990s, coached at UCLA before coming back to midwest. Turning Cardinals around quick.

Dennis Gates (Missouri head coach), just hired at Mizzou after 3 years at Cleve State, won Horizon his last 2 years. Chicago native, 43 years old.

Bryan Mullins (Southern Illinois head coach), having a good 4th season, Illinois guy.

Can Groce handle the Big Ten a 2nd time? Go steal Drake’s coach or Toledo’s had a fun team recently. Heck, there’s a Sullinger on Kent State’s staff and they have a decent record.

I’m at the point where I’m thinking, do your worst because it has to be better than this year.

Or just hope Chris saves his own ass next year. Which, I would love to root for because I like him.

Thad Matta's last 4 years that got him run out of town:
87-50, 39-33 B1G, missed tournament once.

Holtmann's last 4 years that should get him run out of town:
69-46, 31-35 B1G, probably gonna miss the tourney for the 2nd straight year.

Now consider that Matta had plenty more good will banked given his resume. Holtmann's resume is a pretty good first year followed by 6 years of mediocre-to-bad teams, never advancing past the round of 32.

Get him outta here. And I'm eating a heaping plate of crow here because I was one of the biggest fans of hiring him at the time. Tastes like chicken.

Butler’s Chris Holtmann is leading candidate to replace Matta at Ohio State

"Leading candidate"... ..... after all the rejections he's just about the only one on the track. The second place guy (i.e. maybe Jent) is so far back you can barely see him.

That's a long contract, but I believe he was signed through 2025 at Butler, so wasn't much choice.

I think this is about as good a hire as we could have made, outside of pipe dreams like Billy Donovan and Sean Miller.

I've said since the idea of replacing Matta became a legit topic that the idea that the next coach could replicate Matta's success was a risky idea. While it isn't the standard I personally will hold him to, I think Holtmann gives us the best chance of approaching those days as anybody that has been realistically discussed.

Comparing him to Matta directly, I think he's a superior in game coach and tactician. As far as recruiting, he's recruited quite well at Butler, but I'm not sure anybody will recruit here like Matta did from 2005-2010(ish). There were unique circumstances in place during that period that made tOSU far more attractive for blue-chippers than the current day. However, I believe Holtmann can get more out of his players than Matta did.

Patience will be key. But I think there's reason for more optimism this year than there was a week ago. I think Holtmann can maximize the potential of Guys like KBD, Kam Williams, CJ Jackson, the Wessons, Funderburke, and Potter. They might not be a tourney team this year, but they should be more watchable than we expected.

For the first time in years, I feel optimistic about the future of tOSU hoops. Everybody exhale. We got a good one.

It's probably been discussed on here before, but what were the unique circumstances that were in place from 2005-2010(ish)?

1. Kentucky was down.
2. IU was recovering from the nuke job following the Sampson blunder
3. Purdue was just establishing itself under Painter
4. scUM basketball was an afterthought.
5. The Midwest, in general, was wide open as far as having any "national" powers

Now you have a juggernaut Kentucky program. IU, despite middling results on court recruited very well under Crean and will continue to under Miller. Painter recruits very well. scUM is at least competitive in basketball. And you have solid Ohio programs in Xavier and the juggaloes. It's a lot more competitive field regionally than it was a decade ago.

I'd throw out there that any half decent recruiter should be able to use LeBron/Nike/Urban Meyer and his recruiting/social media machine to do well--- at the very least, to lock down a few top Ohio guys each year.

“When you look at his practices, they are so well-organized. I used to go up and watch and it was so much fun to watch because it was seamless,” said Rick Lewis, who runs the Phenom Hoop Report and is the father of former Bulldogs point guard Tyler Lewis. “They weren’t the type of coaches that raised their voices very much. They had a command of the team and practice. You’d watch and see how calm they were and you just had a good feeling about the whole situation.”

Each of his three Butler teams made the NCAA tournament. Each of them advanced past the first round. The 2017 edition twice defeated reigning NCAA champion Villanova in the regular season — and lost to eventual champion North Carolina in the Sweet 16.

His recruiting classes have consistently been ranked among the best in the Big East Conference.
