Bombers like being underdog
Lakewood loaded with prospects
BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
St. Xavier is forecast to lose this week, and the Bombers love such talk.
St. Xavier is rated No. 13 by USA Today, but the Bombers' opponent is No. 8 Lakewood St. Edward. The battle of Ohio football titans will highlight the i-wireless Fox19 Prep Classic on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) at Paul Brown Stadium.
"Everyone is telling us we're the underdog," St. Xavier senior quarterback Ryan Morris said. "All the coaches and everyone at school is saying it. I think that's good for us, because we're usually the favorite.
St. Xavier (2-0) is the reigning Division I state champion. The Bombers, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, have beaten Huber Heights Wayne 52-14 and Indianapolis Cathedral 23-3.
St. Edward (2-0), ranked No. 1 in the Cleveland Plain Dealer area poll, has beaten Cleveland Benedictine 24-7 and Shaker Heights 31-0.
Ohio High magazine predicted Lakewood St. Edward will beat St. Xavier in the 2006 state championship game Dec. 2 at Canton's Fawcett Stadium.
"No one reason, just a feeling that maybe it's their year," Ohio High writer Dave Biddle said, when asked why St. Ed was picked to win. "St. Ed, St. Xavier and Colerain aren't much different in personnel."
One reason St. Ed is getting major props is a stacked senior class, including several Division I college prospects. The Eagles were state semifinalists last year.
St. Ed safety Nate Oliver in February became Ohio State's first oral commitment for the class of 2007. Oliver, wide receiver Kyle Hubbard, and linebacker Diauntae Morrow are rated among the state's top 30 seniors by Ohio High magazine.
St. Ed running back Frank Edmonds might be on the elite list if he was taller (5-8, 187), but he rushed for 2,036 yards and 22 touchdowns last year. He ran for 215 yards in the Eagles' opener, despite missing much of the first half with leg cramps.
St. Xavier has some quality talent but not as many Division I prospects in its senior class. The Bombers have some standouts in their junior class, including running back Darius Ashley (220 yards rushing, five TDs in two games) and strong safety Fred Craig. The Bombers start seven juniors on defense, and most of their offensive skill players - except for Morris - are juniors.
The game will feature similar offenses.
"They like to run the ball, like we do," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. "Frank Edmonds is special. He's really, really, really good. Defensively, they're lights out. They've got great linebackers that run to the ball and great size up front."
Such a mano-a-mano struggle will get national attention, but St. Xavier insists it's not a statement game.
"It's way too early for that," Specht said.
Eric Robbe, a St. Xavier senior defensive back, said the Bombers don't count one game above others. Not when the opponents still include No. 3 USA Today-rated Lakeland, Fla. (next week) and the annual Greater Catholic League South gamut of Elder, La Salle and Moeller.
"It's nice to be on the big stage at Paul Brown, and we're kind of excited to be the underdog," Robbe said. "We can go after them and not have the target on us."

Saw about half of this game on TV. St X defense is unreal. The best-coached group I've seen in HS football. It seems like they have 14 or 15 players on the field. Their guys are ALWAYS in the right position.
St Eds couldn't run the ball at all, and didn't pass effectively, either.
Didn't get to see St X with the ball much, so can't comment on their "O". Not much "O" in this game frm either side, though. 2 good defenses.

That FL team is in for a rude awakening if they think they are going to run roughshod over our "slow" Ohio boys from St X! :wink2:

That sure is a change. I watched them in the State final game last year, and their O was high flying, and unreal. D was good too though.

I don't know about high flying. They run the ball 70-80% of the time. Most of last years games were the same way. They normally win with tough D, a solid running game, good special teams, and few mistakes.

X only completed 2 passes in the title game. I guess you considered the running game high flying. It can be exciting at times, but against tough D's it can get bogged down.

#10 in SI's Power Rankings

St. Xavier (Cincinnati) (3-1)Last Game: Lost to No. 2 Lakeland (Lakeland, Fla.), 25-22, in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.

Notes: Lakeland senior Matt Roddenbery kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Dreadnaughts past the Bombers, who had their 18-game winning streak snapped. St. Xavier had a chance to answer Roddenbery's field goal, but was intercepted on its overtime possession to end the game. St. Xavier junior running back Darius Ashley ran for 120 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while junior Danny Milligan kicked three field goals and caught two passes for 45 yards. Despite the loss, St. Xavier doesn't fall in the rankings because it was a close defeat to the nation's No. 2 team.

Yeah I didnt mean high flying as in passing.........meant high flying as in speed, big plays, etc. Now granted I didnt see them much, other than the championship game. Massilon wins that game if it wasnt for the big plays.

Bombers silence the Pit
Top-ranked St. X wins 3rd straight over No. 3 Panthers

BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

St. Xavier ventured into Elder's notoriously noisy Pit with one goal Friday.
"Our theme this week was, 'Listen to the silence,' " Bombers senior left tackle Wes Schroder said. "We wanted to take control and keep their crowd out of the game."
Things were pretty quiet in the purple Elder sections of the Pit, as a sellout crowd of 10,000 watched St. Xavier beat the Panthers 30-15 in a Greater Catholic League South game.
St. Xavier (5-1, 1-0 GCL-S) is ranked No. 1 in both the state and Enquirer Division I polls and No. 9 nationally by USA Today. Junior running back Darius Ashley carried 32 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns, and classmate Luca Romeo rushed 16 times for 114 yards.
Elder (4-2, 1-1 GCL-S) is ranked No. 3 in the Enquirer area poll and tied for No. 11 in the state rankings.
Elder had about three-fourths of the crowd, but St. Xavier negated any noise problems by taking a 14-0 first quarter lead. It was 24-0 before the Panthers scored with 9:52 left.
St. X, the reigning state champion, now has beaten Elder three years in a row.
Elder coach Doug Ramsey was not pleased with several aspects of the game, but said it may have come down to one thing.
Attitude.
"You know what the difference is?" Ramsey said. "They know they can beat us. We hope it. We can play with them, but we just don't have their mind-set right now."
St. Xavier was up 17-0 by halftime. The Bombers then essentially clinched things with a marathon 18-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. The drive lasted 8? minutes and carried into the early fourth quarter, with Ashley diving in from the 1-yard line.
"I'm still gassed, after that," a grinning Schroder said. "Darius challenged us in the huddle to get it done, and we did."
Ashley credited his line.
"Elder has a great defense, and to come in here and play like this in front of their great crowd ... it's a huge win for us," Ashley said. "My line was great, as usual."
St. X coach Steve Specht said his massive offensive line, whose starters range from 240 to 295 pounds, is gradually getting better. "If our offensive line plays like that, we can be pretty good," Specht said.
Don't forget the always rugged St. X defense, which limited Elder to 69 yards rushing and twice intercepted Elder quarterback John Groene. Ross Morand and Gerry Reilly had the picks, while lineman Pat Muldoon had two sacks.
Groene was 10-for-17 passing for 140 yards and the two picks, and he rushed 16 times for 43 yards. Elder running back Pat Williams carried only five times for 15 yards and a TD, as the St. X offense played keepaway. St. X quarterback Ryan Morris was 8-for-16 passing for 85 yards and a TD. St. X outrushed Elder 252-69.
"With the way Elder can score in a heartbeat, you've got to keep them off the field," Specht said. "That's what we were trying to do. With a back like Darius and a hammer like Luca, and with our line playing well, that's a pretty good combination."

St. X - No. 1 in nation?

Just got back from vacation and still catching up, but wanted to note something that came this way recently:

One of the national poll guys e-mailed to say he was considering rating St. Xavier No. 1 nationally in his preseason football ratings. (No, it's not USA Today). With RB Darius Ashley, LBs Fred Craig and Nick Schneider and K/P Danny Milligan among a slew of top returnees, the Bombers could be rated highly in several polls.

The pollster I'm referring to has done this for years, so it's not just some guy in his basement. Or maybe he does work out of his basement, for all I know. Lots of people have nice, finished basements and big TVs down there and everything. But anyway, this is an established poll and should be out around Aug. 6.

Anyone seen any national preseason polls yet? If so, please shout.

St. X rated No. 4 in nation

Just got an e-mail from the Rise magazine folks that reads, in part:

Rise Magazine has released this year?s Football Preview of the 2007-2008 season including a countdown of the nation?s top 5 high school teams. St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati made the list.

Top 5 Teams for 2007-2008:

1. Miami Northwestern (Miami, FL)
2. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, TX)
3. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA)
4. St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH)
5. Summerville (Summerville, SC)

That's all we have for now. (For those who saw my previous post about St. X possibly being No. 1 in some poll -- no, this was not the one. )

St. X will win state

No, that's not my prediction.

Colerain, Elder, Moeller fans -- please read on.

St. Xavier will win the 2007 Ohio Division I football title, according to ... Ohio High magazine.

A glance at the magazine's state football picks for 2007:

Division I finals: St. Xavier over Massillon Washington
Division II: Trotwood-Madison over Tallmadge
Division III: Dayton Chaminade-Julienne over Mentor Lake Catholic
Division IV: Youngstown Cardinal Mooney over Kettering Alter
Division V: Lima Central Catholic over Maria Stein Marion Local
Division VI: Norwalk St. Paul over Lehman Catholic

For what it's worth.

St. X returns 15 starters from its 2006 team, and that's not counting standout kicker/punter Danny Milligan. Readers of this blog know most of the names -- RB Darius Ashley, FS Fred Craig, LB Nick Schneider, WR Stephon Ball, et al.

"We're good on paper," St. X coach Steve Specht said the other day, "but games aren't played on paper."

Beyond St. X, we're curious to see how the top 5 shakes our in our Enquirer preseason poll. (Our preview runs Aug. 20).
The usual suspects will be up there -- Colerain, Elder, Moeller. La Salle is always in the mix. Behind Colerain in the GMC, we're not quite sure. Remember Sycamore as last year's surprise team?

Do you agree that

St. X-DeMatha ESPN status

You may have seen this week's announcement that ESPNU, ESPN and ESPN2 will televise at least 14 live high school football games as part of the 2007 ESPNU Old Spice High School Showcase.

You may also have seen the St. Xavier-DeMatha game, which is part of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge on Sept. 2 (12:05 p.m.), was not listed. That's because the Herbstreit game is still being negotiated with ESPN and also is not part of the Old Spice series.

Dan Jones of Chicago-based Intersport, a sports marketing firm that is handling much of the Herbstreit organization this year, said St. X-DeMatha still looks good for ESPN.

"We're still in talks with ESPN," Jones told me today. "This (St. X-DeMatha) is not part of that series of Old Spice events. We do not have a deal finalized with (ESPN), but we're very close and we're continuing to work on it."

Pretty good exposure for the Cincy football. Two big things I learned in that article (2 posts ago, not the last one)...

The DeMatha game will be on ESPN! At least it is expected. That is so awesome.

The Bombers won yet another state title and National Championship in swimming. Another brick in the wall.

The Enquirer - Defense preserves perfect St. X start

PARMA, Ohio - St. Xavier is among the nation's premier high school football teams, but the Bombers were reminded Saturday how difficult things sometimes can be, even for the best.

"You always have a target on your back," senior Dan Milligan said after his 33-yard field goal in the third overtime gave St. Xavier a 17-14 victory over Cleveland St. Ignatius.

"Yes, we want the national title, but we want the Greater Catholic League and the Ohio titles first. For every team we play, it's a game they want to be at their best."

St. Ignatius has won nine state championships and 49 playoff games with Chuck Kyle as its foot ball coach.

Someday, long after the disappointment has worn off, Kyle might figure where a regular-season loss ranks among his team's greatest efforts.

"We came so close to pulling it off. Wow," said Kyle, pausing to control his emotions, moments after the Wildcats lost, 17-14, in three overtimes to Cincinnati St. Xavier, the nation's second-ranked team, Saturday.
