Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Big Papa;774648; said:
Absolutely, this team had some many needs coming into this offseason, there is no way they can fill every hole before the first game. They are doing a good job, IMO, so far of filling the biggest holes.

Oddly enough, one of the biggest holes (DL -- specifically NT) hasn't been addressed at all. But then, there's been slim pickings there in FA.
Right now I'd almost like to see them take another WR in the 3rd or 4th. I'm very skeptical of Wilson -- and this is an incredibly deep year for WRs.

Browns acquire Jamal Lewis

Former Ravens rusher signs with division rival he routinely thumped

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

It's only a one-year contract, but Jamal Lewis has joined the team he used to torment.
Lewis, who set the NFL's all-time single-game rushing mark against the Browns, agreed to join the Browns on Wednesday evening.
His decision came shortly after word leaked that the Baltimore Ravens were close to acquiring Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee via trade. That deal would have left Lewis without a team, so he joined a team that will play the Ravens twice a year.

Browns move fast for Lewis

If you can't beat him, sign him.
That must have been the philosophy behind the Browns' decision to sign Baltimore running Jamal Lewis, one of their biggest nemeses since the franchise rebirth.
Lewis and the Browns reached a one-year deal Wednesday night in a transaction that was as swift as it was stunning. It might have a profound impact on Reuben Droughns' future, but might not alter the Browns' draft plans.

rowns sign Jamal Lewis
Thursday, March 8, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA Picture a population explosion of high first-round draft picks at the skill positions. A quarterback drafted No. 3 overall, receivers picked at No. 3 and No. 6, and a back taken at No. 5.

After signing Jamal Lewis to a one-year contract Wednesday, and with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. already on the roster, the Browns can finish the vision if they draft Brady Quinn next month.

In a span of five days, the Browns offense has gone from being a punching bag to possibly becoming a Golden Gloves contender.

Jamal Lewis, the Ravens' all-time leading rusher who was cut last week in a salary cap move, agreed to a one-year contract with the rival Browns last night, the team announced.

On Friday, the opening day of free agency this winter, the Browns landed guard Eric Steinbach, the top offensive lineman on the market.

Signing Lewis could mean the end of Reuben Droughns in Cleveland. Droughns is due a $1.75 million roster bonus later this month, plus his salary for 2007 would be $1.25 million.

CLEVELAND ? It turns out free-agent running back Jamal Lewis was not just making a courtesy visit. After meeting with the Browns yesterday, he signed a one-year contract.

With Jamal Lewis signed I think you have to look at trading that pick with the intention of drafting a top flight OL (Levi Brown). Thomas will be gone (possibly at 2).

It's almost laughable when you go down the Browns roster and look at the spots where they need help.

I think Savage is doing what he can with this team to get it to win now, but I just don't think it's physically possible with this squad right now. They are so far away from being a play off team.

Hope I'm wrong.

i still think you go with AP at three, all lewis showed last year is that he's a shell of the guy that ran for 2000+ in '03. i hope i'm wrong, but i think that they could get the same production out of droughns next year. lewis looked horrible last yr behind a very above average o-line what do think he's going to look like behind the browns o-line. if they wanted to sign a vet RB why not look harder at a mcgahee or even the availability of ricky williams from miami, i know williams is a head case but atleast he hasn't been in federal prison an he's got way less mileage on his legs. with that said they have to look at joe thomas with the third pick as their #1 option, then go from there.

I have three friends who all root for different teams that are saying, "if we get Quinn, I'm done". That being said, I don't mind the Lewis deal because at least I don't have to watch his 245lb. bowling ball frame bouncing around off of our defneders. On top of that, it's a 1 year deal which might be screaming, mentor. Who knows.

All I know is, if they could just ship Braylon off for a quality, level-headed talent and keep the Soulja healthy...those would be two great strides.

Regardless of the Lewis addition, we will take a tackle either in the 1st or 2nd without a doubt. I also expect to trade down (which means no Thomas). Should be a very interesting draft for us Browns folk.

i agree with the calvin johnson theory...it's looking more and more like detroit is high on thomas and with such a public outcry not to pick quinn, im saying either AP, CJ, or tradedown with a team that is looking to jump the Bucs for johnson. trading the pick, if the deal is sweet, is looking like the smartest move right now.
